Exploration of future changes of residential locations in an urban agglomeration using an individual-based simulation model (Mobisim)

2015

To ensure that housing supply is suitable to households’ needs and preferences represents a major planning concern. These needs and preferences depend on the households’ characteristics and on their lifecycle changes (union, birth, divorce…). Residential choice factors are numerous (housing and residential environment characteristics) and their role is often different according to the types of households. Residential dynamics involve a great variety of elements, in interaction with each other, and the causal relationships are difficult to identify. Thus, it is not possible to predict the households’ residential behaviour, nor their possible evolutions, without a suitable tool. To study intr…

Le nombre de sujets dans les panels d'analyse sensorielle : une approche base de données

2012

The costs associated with sensory evaluation increase with the number of panelists to be enrolled. Classical power computation can be used to derive the minimal number of subjects of a sensory panel in order to control both type I (α risk) and type II (β risk) errors. However, this power computation requires estimates of the size of the product effect to be sought and of the residual variability of the ANOVA model used. Generally, both product effect size and residual variability are difficult to estimate a priori by the sensory analyst. This work offers estimations of these two parameters thanks to the analysis of hundreds descriptive andhedonic studies collected respectively in two databa…

Deconvolution filtering for nonlinear stochastic systems with randomly occurring sensor delays via probability-dependent method

2013

This paper deals with a robustH∞deconvolution filtering problem for discrete-time nonlinear stochastic systems with randomly occurring sensor delays. The delayed measurements are assumed to occur in a random way characterized by a random variable sequence following the Bernoulli distribution with time-varying probability. The purpose is to design anH∞deconvolution filter such that, for all the admissible randomly occurring sensor delays, nonlinear disturbances, and external noises, the input signal distorted by the transmission channel could be recovered to a specified extent. By utilizing the constructed Lyapunov functional relying on the time-varying probability parameters, the desired su…

Healthcare trajectory mining by combining multidimensional component and itemsets

2012

Sequential pattern mining is aimed at extracting correlations among temporal data. Many different methods were proposed to either enumerate sequences of set valued data (i.e., itemsets) or sequences containing multidimensional items. However, in real-world scenarios, data sequences are described as events of both multidimensional items and set valued information. These rich heterogeneous descriptions cannot be exploited by traditional approaches. For example, in healthcare domain, hospitalizations are defined as sequences of multi-dimensional attributes (e.g. Hospital or Diagnosis) associated with two sets, set of medical procedures (e.g. $ \lbrace $ Radiography, Appendectomy $\rbrace$) and…

EVALUATION OF FRUIT QUALITY IN LOQUAT USING BOTH CHEMICAL AND SENSORY ANALYSES

2011

The use of scientific methodologies on fruit quality perception by using both instrumental and sensory analyses has been affirmed and tested on many fruit tree species. Loquat is still little known from a sensory analysis point of view. The aim of this work is to evaluate fruit quality characteristics of some loquat cultivars using both physico-chemical and sensory analyses. The trial was conducted in Palermo, Sicily on 4 cultivars: ‘Bianco Dolce’, ‘BRT20’, ‘Peluche’ and ‘Nespolone di Trabia’. Fruits were analyzed for weight, transversal and longitudinal diameter, soluble solid content, titratable acidity, peel colour and sensory profile by a trained panel. The sensory attributes were corre…

MOLECULAR ANALYSIS OF COLLETOTRICHUM SPECIES ASSOCIATED TO OLIVE IN CALABRIA.

2013

A new molecular approach based on the use of genus-specific primers targeting the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of rDNA, was developed and used to study the diversity of Colletotrichum species associated with the olive canopy in the Gioia Tauro plain (Calabria, southern Italy). Representative symptomatic and symptomless samples of leaves, flowers and fruits were collected during 2012 and analyzed by extracting total DNA and amplifying the target region with the genus-specific primers. Amplicons were cloned and sequenced in order to use the ITS as a barcode gene. No Colletotrichum species were detected in the first sampling period (May 28, 2012), whereas around 15% of the analyze…

Solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in the evaluation of soil organic matter changes following thermal variations

2009

Soil organic matter (SOM) is an ubiquitous, complex material which is produced by the degradation of plant tissues and animal bodies. It is the major indicator of soil quality since it is directly involved in the maintenance of soil fertility, prevention of erosion and desert encroachment and provision of suitable environment for biological activity. Organic matter is an important driving force in environmental global change as it acts as both a source and sink of atmospheric carbon. However, SOM is subjected to rapid changes due to environmental transformations such as massive deforestations, fires, intensive land uses, temperature increases and so on. In the present work, a characterizati…

High-density SNP markers elucidate the genetic divergence and population structure of Noticiana sheep breed in the Mediterranean context

2023

Among livestock species, sheep have played an early major role in the Mediterranean area. Italy has a long history of sheep breeding and, despite a dramatic contraction in numbers, still raise several local populations that may represent a unique source of genetic diversity. The Noticiana is a breed of the south-eastern part of Sicily appreciated both for its dairy products and for its resistance to harsh environment. In this study, the high-density Illumina Ovine SNP600K BeadChip array was used for the first genome-wide characterization of 48 individuals of Noticiana sheep to investigate its diversity, the genome structure and the relationship within the context of worldwide and Italian br…

Microscopy and Molecular biology techniques for the study biocenosis diversity in semi-confined environments

2010

This study is part of a wider conservation project of artistic and anthropological finds located in the Grotto of the Saints (Licodia Eubea, Alia, Sicily), and represents an opportunity for investigating the micro-and macro biological systems colonizing this particular environment. It is well-known that the bio-receptivity of surfaces is strongly related to its constituent materials and environmental parameters, whose effects promote the establishment of specific biotic communities. This is particularly true for caves, hypogea and semi-confined environments and, in particular for the Grotto of the Saints, where besides the presence of different nutrient sources, there are also high humidity…

DESIGN AND OPTIMIZATION OF A CHASSIS FOR A FORMULA SAE RACE CAR

2009

In this paper, the design process of a new chassis for a Formula SAE car is presented. The chassis is undoubtedly one of the most important parts of the car, both for the influence that it has on the vehicle dynamic behaviour, and because it is the main component that assures the driver safety. The new designed chassis is composed of many structural tubular bars and has been equipped with systems for the joining of all the auxiliary members. After the definition of the masses distribution and the choice of the main dimensions, preliminary CAD and FEM models have been carried out for the evaluation of the structural behaviour of this kind of vehicle. Successively, in order maximizing the tor…
