Semantic traffic applications based on DatexII
2009
In this work we demonstrate a particular use of ontologies based on the European specifications DATEXII. These specifications are designed and developed as a traffic and travel data exchange mechanism by a European task force to set up and standardise the interface between traffic control and information centres. It is the reference for applications that are developed and implemented in Europe. This language describes concepts and structures of data related to traffic, but the description is just syntactic, not semantic. Therefore the objective to be reached in this part of the research has been to develop a semantic description in order to carry out some applications like syndication and a …

InspirationWall
2015
Collaborative idea generation leverages social interactions and knowledge sharing to spark diverse associations and produce creative ideas. Information exploration systems expand the current context by suggesting novel but related concepts. In this paper we introduce InspirationWall, an unobtrusive display that leverages speech recognition and information exploration to enhance an ongoing idea generation session with automatically retrieved concepts that relate to the conversation. We evaluated the system in six idea generation sessions of 20 minutes with small groups of two people. Preliminary results suggest that InspirationWall contrasts the decay of idea productivity over time and can t…
An A* Based Semantic Tokenizer for Increasing the Performance of Semantic Applications
2013
Semantic Applications (SAs) makes use of ontolo- gies and their performance can depend on the syntactic labels of the modeled entities; even if several approaches have been devised to formalize ontologies, no formal approaches have been devised for naming their constituents, which look as long word concatenations without any particular separation. We present a novel semantic tokenizer that finds the sub-words through an application of the A* based search algorithm; the A* functions rely on a set of linguistic criteria and on the meta-cognitive perspective of the activity of reading.
Designing for Exploratory Search on Touch Devices
2015
Exploratory search confront users with challenges in expressing search intents as the current search interfaces require investigating result listings to identify search directions, iterative typing, and reformulating queries. We present the design of Exploration Wall, a touch-based search user interface that allows incremental exploration and sense-making of large information spaces by combining entity search, flexible use of result entities as query parameters, and spatial configuration of search streams that are visualized for interaction. Entities can be flexibly reused to modify and create new search streams, and manipulated to inspect their relationships with other entities. Data compr…
Big data analytics and internationalisation in Italian firms
2022
The chapter focuses on the role of big data in developing firms’ international e-commerce. We explore the effect of three different types of big data approaches on the probability of firms entering international markets via web sales. Specifically, we consider the following approaches: (a) use of big data managed by internal firm staff; (b) use of big data managed by specialised consulting firms; and (c) use of big data jointly managed by internal firm staff and specialised consultant firms. Applying qualitative data models on a large sample of Italian firms (about 18,900 firms), we find that the use of big data managed by internal staff or by specialised consulting firms is positively asso…
Social Media Data in an Augmented Reality System for Situation Awareness Support in Emergency Control Rooms
2021
AbstractDuring crisis situations, emergency operators require fast information access to achieve situation awareness and make the best possible decisions. Augmented reality could be used to visualize the wealth of user-generated content available on social media and enable context-adaptive functions for emergency operators. Although emergency operators agree that social media analytics will be important for their future work, it poses a challenge to filter and visualize large amounts of social media data. We conducted a goal-directed task analysis to identify the situation awareness requirements of emergency operators. By collecting tweets during two storms in Germany we evaluated the usefu…

Analysing software integration scenarios: the case of telecommunications operations software
2008
Telecom operators deploy a vast number of software systems to support their operations. Vendors of this software often integrate in their products several software systems, in order to enable innovations, minimize customer's integration efforts, etc. Different integration scenarios can be envisioned, and the issue of identifying more beneficial scenarios is of a great importance to the vendors. This paper aims at analyzing different software integration scenarios from the viewpoint of their support for innovations, and focuses on the context of telecommunications operations software. For each scenario, the overall modularity of the set of software systems is evaluated, and the expected bene…
