Explaining Change Paths of Systems and Software Development Practices

2010

This chapter discusses how systems development practices are shaped. Based on interviews conducted in ten development organizations and previous literature, we identify eight types of change paths in systems development practices: emergence, adoption, idealization, formalization, abandonment, informalization, entropy, and disobedience. We argue that the eight change path types provide an integrated theoretical framework on the study of how systems development practices change in organizations, projects, and among individual developers in a given context. We discuss how this framework complements existing theories and concepts of the contemporary literature on systems development.

Software evolution decision-making is important. Decisions can be made by an individual or a group. Currently it is not known how decision-making is organized in software industry. Scenarios on Adoption of Open Source Software in the Communications Software Industry

We examine the trends and developments affecting the adoption of open source software in the communications software industry. Based on expert interviews and scenario analysis, four alternative and possibly co-existing scenarios are derived. The analysis suggests that communication service providers will mostly deploy open source software in infrastructure software. Alternative developments include use of open source software in launching new services and in cloud computing. The present study is relevant particularly for technology managers considering open source strategies.

This study examines how software businesses are acquiring new software technology innovations (STIs) in rapidly changing globalized business environment characterized by rapidly shortening software technology life cycles, changing customer demands, and intense competition. It was executed through both theoretical and empirical investigations and analyses. It describes one case company as an example of the diffusion of STI and develops a framework for the diffusion of software technology innovation. The research findings are useful for both further research and industrial settings.

Machine Learning Methods for One-Session Ahead Prediction of Accesses to Page Categories

This paper presents a comparison among several well-known machine learning techniques when they are used to carry out a one-session ahead prediction of page categories. We use records belonging to 18 different categories accessed by users on the citizen web portal Infoville XXI. Our first approach is focused on predicting the frequency of accesses (normalized to the unity) corresponding to the user’s next session. We have utilized Associative Memories (AMs), Classification and Regression Trees (CARTs), Multilayer Perceptrons (MLPs), and Support Vector Machines (SVMs). Creation of a food taste database using an in-home "taste" profile method

International audience; The purpose of this study was to create a food 'taste' database using an innovative in-home profile method. The five basic tastes and fat sensation were studied. The proposed method consisted in an intensive training in laboratory (55 h, 5 months) immediately followed by an in-home measurements phase (8 months) during which 12 trained panelists had to evaluate the five tastes and fat sensation of the foods they typically consumed.
