Anti-Metastatic Activities of Heparins

2009

Heparins are commonly administered to cancer patients for the treatment and prophylaxis of thromboembolic events. Importantly, apart from the anti-thrombotic action of these drugs, several clinical trials have demonstrated an improved survival of cancer patients who were administered low-molecular-weight heparins (LMWHs). This improved survival was independent of the anti-thrombotic efficacy, since vitamin K antagonists did not improve clinical prognosis. Moreover, this protective effect was not the result of an inhibition of the growth of primary tumors, but rather the prevention of the spreading of cancer through metastases. This has been also shown in some animal experiments. The protect…

Procalcitonin and C-reactive protein as early predictors of anastomotic leak in colorectal surgery: a prospective observational study.

2013

Although the early diagnosis of anastomotic leak is a key point in reducing its clinical consequences, in daily practice, anastomotic leak diagnosis is often late. The aim of this study was to determine whether procalcitonin and C-reactive protein are good predictors of anastomotic leak in colorectal surgery. This is a prospective observational study. This study was conducted by a specialized colorectal multidisciplinary team of a tertiary teaching hospital.A series of 205 consecutive patients who underwent elective colorectal surgery in a specialized unit was prospectively analyzed. The following data were collected: demographic, surgical, ASA class, POSSUM, and morbidity. During the first 5 …

Randomized, Double-Blind, Clinically Controlled Trial of Intranasal Calcitonin Treatment in Patients with Hip Fracture

2002

The objective of this study was to evaluate the short-term outcome of intranasal calcitonin treatment of elderly hip fracture patients on pain, bone loss, functional recovery, and length of hospital stay. In addition, we wanted to compare the effect of calcitonin with placebo on fusion of hip fractures treated with internal fixation using a screw or a nail. In a randomized, double-blind, clinically controlled trial, 260 independently living patients (aged 65 years or older) with acute hip fracture were randomly assigned to intranasal calcitonin 200 IU daily for 3 months or matching placebo nasal spray. Analyses were completed on an intention-to-treat basis. Three months after the operation,…

Erratum: Melanoma Unknown Primary Brain Metastasis Treatment With ECHO-7 Oncolytic Virus Rigvir: A Case Report

2018

Melanoma is considered an aggressive malignancy with a tendency of forming metastasis in the brain. Less than 10% of all melanoma cases present with unknown primary tumor location. This diagnose is yet to be fully understood, because there are only theoretical assumptions about the nature of the disease. Melanoma brain metastases have many severe side effects and, unfortunately, any disease related to the brain has limited therapeutic options due to the blood–brain barrier. The course of the disease after a treatment course is complicated to predict, and it is difficult to obtain long-lasting remission. In this report, we describe a female patient with unknown primary melanoma brain metasta…

Indocyanine Green to Assess Vascularity of Ileal Conduit Anastomosis During Pelvic Exenteration for Recurrent/Persistent Gynecological Cancer: A Pilo…

2021

IntroductionPelvic exenteration performed for recurrent/persistent gynecological malignancies has been associated with urological short- and long-term morbidity due to altered vascularization of tissues for previous radiotherapy. The aims of the present study were to describe the use of intravenous indocyanine green (ICG) to assess vascularity of urinary diversion (UD) after pelvic exenteration for gynecologic cancers, to evaluate the feasibility and safety of this technique, and to assess the postoperative complications.MethodsProspective, observational, single-center, pilot study including consecutive patients undergoing anterior or total pelvic exenteration due to persistent/recurrent gy…

Abstract PS10-16: Real-world efficacy of ribociclib + aromatase inhibitor/fulvestrant, or endocrine monotherapy, or chemotherapy as first-line treatm…

2021

Abstract Background: In MONALEESA-3 and MONALEESA-7 trials, ribociclib (RIB, a selective CDK4/6 inhibitor) in combination with endocrine therapy (aromatase inhibitor [AI] or fulvestrant [FUL]) demonstrated a significant prolongation of overall survival among patients with breast cancer (BC), regardless of menopausal status and treatment-line. In the premenopausal or perimenopausal women, RIB + AI/FUL should be combined with a luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone agonist. The real-world evidence for the effectiveness, safety, and tolerability of RIB + AI/FUL in the routine clinical practice is needed to support the use of this combination. Methods: RIBANNA is a prospective, non-intervention…

Kinking, coiling, and tortuosity of extracranial internal carotid artery: is it the effect of a metaplasia?

2006

INTRODUCTION: Morphological anomalies of the extracranial internal carotid artery (ICA) cause symptomatic cerebrovascular insufficiency in 4-16% of the cases. The aim of the present study is to evaluate macroscopic and microscopic features of a group of extracranial ICA anomalies, specifically kinking, coiling, and tortuosity, eventually affecting the surgical approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2003 to December 2005, 10 out of 169 (6%) revascularized patients (pts) were operated upon because of an ICA anomaly. They were all but two symptomatics. Seven pts were treated by ICA transection and end-to-side reimplantation of the ICA at the level of the carotid bulb; three pts were tre…

Savstarpējās atzīšanas principa piemērošana un tā pārkāpuma attaisnošana preču brīvas aprites jomā Eiropas Savienībā

2019
