Bronchial artery embolization is a well accepted and widely used technique in the management of massive haemoptysis in cystic fibrosis (CF). It can be a complex procedure requiring a deep knowledge of the bronchial artery anatomy including the possible bronchial anastomoses. We report a case of complex vascular anatomy of the left bronchial artery with multiple anastomoses with the ipsilateral subclavian artery as cause of non-attempted embolization. © 2003 European Cystic Fibrosis Society. Background Anastomotic tension has repeatedly been associated with anastomotic leakages after esophagectomy for cancer or esophageal atresia repair. We therefore aimed to determine which anastomotic technique would come as close as possible to the native esophagus in sustaining traction forces. Constant traction for several minutes at esophageal remnants and large suture bites are also considered relevant in long-gap esophageal atresia repair. Laser Welding - Suitable for Vascular Anastomosis?

Carotid arteries of 21 piglets were transsected and reanastomosed either by laser welding (Neodym:YAG laser) or by conventional suture anastomosis. Histological specimens of the anastomoses obtained 2 to 32 days after the operation showed less foreign body reaction and intimal hyperplasia after laser welding than after suturing. There was, however, no significant difference when comparing occurrence of thrombosis, patency rate, or growth of the anastomosis in growing animals. A 67-year-old man was referred to our attention for management of esophageal adenocarcinoma, localized at the level of the esophagogastric junction and obstructed the 1/3 of the esophageal lumen. Due to the extension of the disease (T3N1M0-Stage IIIA), the patient underwent neo-adjuvant chemo-radiation therapy and he was then scheduled for a minimally invasive surgical procedure including laparoscopic gastroplasty, uniportal thoracoscopic esophageal dissection and intrathoracic end-to-end esophago-gastric anastomosis. Rapid differentiation of commercial juices and blends by using sugar profiles obtained by capillary zone electrophoresis with indirect UV detection.

A method for the determination of sugars in several fruit juices and nectars by capillary zone electrophoresis with indirect UV-vis detection has been developed. Under optimal conditions, commercial fruit juices and nectars from several fruits were analyzed, and the sugar and cyclamate contents were quantified in less than 6 min. A study for the detection of blends of high-value juices (orange and pineapple) with cheaper alternatives was also developed. For this purpose, different chemometric techniques, based on sugar content ratios, were applied. Linear discriminant analysis showed that fruit juices can be distinguished according to the fruit type, juice blends also being differentiated. …
Citēšanas kultūra skolēnu zinātniski pētnieciskajos darbos Liepājas Valsts 1. ģimnāzijā

Bakalaura darbā pētīta citēšanas kultūra kā citēšanas prasmju kopums, kas nepieciešams skolēniem, rakstot zinātniski pētnieciskos darbus. Pētījuma mērķis ir izpētīt Liepājas Valsts 1.ģimnāzijas citēšanas kultūras situāciju un izstrādāt priekšlikumus skolēnu citēšanas prasmju attīstībai. Pētījuma teorētisko bāzi veido sistēmu teorija un E. Eriksona epiģenētiskā teorija. Pētījuma rezultāti tika iegūti izmantojot dokumentu analīzes (kontentanalīze) un apsekošanas (aptaujas) metodes. Pētījuma rezultāti liecina, ka informācijas pārpilnības un vieglās pieejamības apstākļos ir nepieciešams pievērst lielāku uzmanību skolēnu citēšanas prasmju attīstībai.
