Towards a Comprehension of University Dropout in Catalonia: the Case of Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona
2015
The article presents the results of a research that aims to unfold the reasons behind students’ dropout at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). Data is analyzed, and interviews and focus groups with students who have dropout, study degree’s coordinators and institutional authorities are carried out. Results indicate that part of the abandonment taking place is voluntary, natural and even necessary, when the student does not enter the desired option or discovers that the studies do not fi t with their vocational interests, but it also represents a misalignment between the academic offer and the students’ capabilities, performance and motivation.
207 Diagnosis of Anderson-Fabry Disease in Childhood. What Should We Focus on?
2004
Background: Anderson-Fabry disease (FD) is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder which also affects female carriers and has an early onset of symptoms in childhood in both genders. Signs and symptoms are frequently misunderstood and often diagnosis is made approximately 10–20 years after their onset. This has been clearly demonstrated by Fabry outcome survey (FOS) a European database on the natural history of FD and the effects of enzyme replacement therapy with agalsidase alfa (Replagal). Methods: Demographic data on 82 children (40 boys and 42 girls) below 18 years of age, with a median age at FOS entry of 12.9 (0.7–17.9) were analysed Results: Most frequently reported symptoms (60–80%) …
Combining Academic Education With Soft Skills Development: Some Common Aspects of Educational Preparation of IT Professionals and Schoolteachers
2021
In the modern educational process aimed on preparing professionals in the applied areas, it’s crucial, along with purely professional training, to provide students both with solid theoretical background and help them to develop “soft skills” that will facilitate their smooth and efficient adaptation to the industry realities when they start their professional careers. In this paper we consider practical cases of acquiring soft skills through intensive field experience in two areas related to mathematical education.
Action research as a school-based strategy in intercultural professional development for teachers
2011
Abstract Teacher professional development is a key factor for transforming professional and school culture. This article describes a case study undertaken in a Spanish school during the 2007–2008 academic year. Our aim is to explain how action research methodology was applied to encourage professional and school culture towards an intercultural and inclusive approach. Our results show that the training process challenged teachers’ pre-existing deficit theory perspectives and empowered them as leaders for school change. The conclusions identify the key factors that enabled teachers to engage in critical reflection, and to implement strategies for collaborative work and community participatio…
Personal variables, motivation and avoidance learning strategies in undergraduate students
2014
Abstract This study examines the relationships among students' personal variables, their initial motivation and the avoidance learning strategies they used during the teaching/learning process followed in the Educational Psychology subject matter. The sample comprised 195 Spanish undergraduate students who studied Educational Psychology. A questionnaire was administered at the beginning of the academic year to measure students' personal variables and their initial motivation, while another was administered at the end of the academic year to measure students' involvement in their learning process through the avoidance strategies they used. The data analysis was done by using structural equat…
Geochemical signature of Paleozoic accretionary complexes of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt in South Mongolia: Constraints on arc environments and c…
2006
Abstract We report a reconnaissance geochemical and Nd-isotopic study for 33 metaigneous and metavolcaniclastic rocks from the ca. 470 to 290 Ma old Gurvan Sayhan, Zoolen, Nemegt Uul, Bayanleg-Hatuu, and Tseel mountain ranges in southern Mongolia, in order to infer tectonic environments, test a recently proposed multiple terrane model, and explore the late-stage development of the southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). Samples from the Gurvan Sayhan and the Zoolen ranges have a predominantly intermediate, calc-alkaline composition; they display LREE enrichment, excess abundances of fluid-soluble elements, and low concentrations of high-field strength elements. These data, in combinati…
Development of microextraction techniques in combination with GC-MS/MS for the determination of mycotoxins and metabolites in human urine.
2017
Simple and highly efficient sample preparation procedures, namely, dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction and salting-out liquid–liquid extraction for the analysis of ten Fusarium mycotoxins and metabolites in human urine were compared. Various parameters affecting extraction efficiency were carefully evaluated. Under optimal extraction conditions, salting-out liquid–liquid extraction showed a better accuracy (84–96%) and precision (<14%) than dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction. Hence, a multibiomarker method based on salting-out liquid–liquid extraction followed by gas chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry was proposed. Satisfactory results in terms of validation were achiev…
Development of a GC–MS/MS strategy to determine 15 mycotoxins and metabolites in human urine
2014
The widespread mycotoxins contamination of food commodities has made the monitoring of their levels essential. To overcome the disadvantages of the indirect approach by food analysis, detection of mycotoxin as biomarkers in urine provides a useful and specific data for exposure assessment to these food contaminants. In this work, a sensitive, rapid and accurate method based on gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry procedure to determine 15 mycotoxins and metabolites in human urine was optimized and validated taking into consideration the guidelines specified in Commission Decision 2002/657/EC and 401/2006/EC. A salting-out assisted acetonitrile-based extraction was used for sample pre…
Multi-mycotoxin analysis in wheat semolina using an acetonitrile-based extraction procedure and gas chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry
2012
A new analytical method for the rapid and simultaneous determination of ten mycotoxins including patulin, zearalenone and eight trichothecenes (nivalenol, fusarenon-X, diacetoxyscirpenol, 3-acetyl-deoxynivalenol, neosolaniol, deoxynivalenol, T-2 and HT-2) in wheat semolina has been developed and optimized. Sample extraction and purification were performed with a modified QuEChERS-based (acronym of Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe) procedure and determined by gas chromatography (GC) coupled to triple quadrupole instrument (QqQ). This is the first paper on the application of GC-QqQ-MS/MS to analysis of mycotoxins. Careful optimization of the gas chromatography-tandem mass spectr…
Exposure assessment of Spanish lactating mothers to acrylamide via human biomonitoring.
2021
Abstract Acrylamide (AA) is an organic compound classified as “Probably carcinogenic to humans” (Group 2 A) that can be found principally in processed carbohydrate-rich foods and tobacco smoke. In humans, after exposure, AA is rapidly metabolized and excreted in urine, predominantly as N-acetyl-S-(2-carbamoylethyl)-l-cysteine (AAMA), N-acetyl-S-(2-carbamoyl-2-hydroxyethyl)-l-cysteine (GAMA3) and N-Acetyl-3-[(3-amino-3-oxopropyl)sulfinyl]-L-alanine (AAMA-Sul), which can be used as short-term biomarkers of exposure to AA. In this study, the presence of AA metabolites in urine samples of lactating mothers living in Spain (n = 114) was analyzed by “dilute and shoot” and liquid chromatography co…
