Remnants of Anderson localization in prethermalization induced by white noise

2017

We study the non-equilibrium evolution of a one-dimensional quantum Ising chain with spatially disordered, time-dependent, transverse fields characterised by white noise correlation dynamics. We establish pre-thermalization in this model, showing that the quench dynamics of the on-site transverse magnetisation first approaches a metastable state unaffected by noise fluctuations, and then relaxes exponentially fast towards an infinite temperature state as a result of the noise. We also consider energy transport in the model, starting from an inhomogeneous state with two domain walls which separate regions characterised by spins with opposite transverse magnetization. We observe at intermedia…

Biomarkers in Anderson–Fabry Disease

2020

Fabry disease is a rare lysosomal storage disorder caused by a deficiency of α-galactosidase A, resulting in multisystemic involvement. Lyso-Gb3 (globotriaosylsphingosine), the deacylated form of Gb3, is currently measured in plasma as a biomarker of classic Fabry disease. Intensive research of biomarkers has been conducted over the years, in order to detect novel markers that may potentially be used in clinical practice as a screening tool, in the context of the diagnostic process and as an indicator of response to treatment. An interesting field of application of such biomarkers is the management of female heterozygotes who present difficulty in predictable clinical progression. This revi…

207 Diagnosis of Anderson-Fabry Disease in Childhood. What Should We Focus on?

2004

Background: Anderson-Fabry disease (FD) is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder which also affects female carriers and has an early onset of symptoms in childhood in both genders. Signs and symptoms are frequently misunderstood and often diagnosis is made approximately 10–20 years after their onset. This has been clearly demonstrated by Fabry outcome survey (FOS) a European database on the natural history of FD and the effects of enzyme replacement therapy with agalsidase alfa (Replagal). Methods: Demographic data on 82 children (40 boys and 42 girls) below 18 years of age, with a median age at FOS entry of 12.9 (0.7–17.9) were analysed Results: Most frequently reported symptoms (60–80%) …

Dominant vs. nondominant arm advantage in mentally simulated actions in right handers

2013

Although plentiful data are available regarding mental states involving the dominant-right arm, the evidence for the nondominant-left arm is sparse. Here, we investigated whether right-handers can generate accurate predictions with either the right or the left arm. Fifteen adults carried out actual and mental arm movements in two directions with varying inertial resistance (inertial anisotropy phenomenon). We recorded actual and mental movement times and used the degree of their similarity as an indicator for the accuracy of motor imagery/prediction process. We found timing correspondences (isochrony) between actual and mental right arm movements in both rightward (low inertia resistance) …

Migraine and handedness.

2020

Migraine is a typically unilateral disorder in adulthood; however, the reasons for painful lateralization have been little investigated. The possible influence of manual dominance was suggested. We aimed to investigate the localization of pain in migraine attacks in right-handed and left-handed subjects. The retrospective study collected 546 patients with migraine aged between 16 and 65 years, reporting the manual dominance to the Edinburgh test. We included 466 right-handed and 80 left-handed subjects with migraine. We registered 4215 unilateral painful attacks. The right-handers had 3412 unilateral episodes; 62.8% of the attacks were characterized by pain on the right side and 37.2% by pa…

Cardiac manifestations of Anderson-Fabry disease in heterozygous females.

2002

AbstractObjectivesWe sought to define the prevalence of cardiac involvement in female patients with Anderson–Fabry disease (AFD).BackgroundAnderson–Fabry disease is a rare inborn X-linked lysosomal storage disorder. Globotriaosylceramide (Gb3), the major substrate of the deficient α-galactosidase A enzyme, accumulates progressively in vulnerable cells, including the cardiovascular system. It has been believed that heterozygous females have less cardiac involvement than hemizygous males with AFD.MethodsWe performed two-dimensional echocardiographic examinations of female patients heterozygous for AFD.ResultsSince 1997, a total of 55 female patients (mean age, 39.6 years; range, 6.1 to 70.8 y…

The Electronic Structure of Hexagonal BaCoO3

1999

Abstract TB–LMTO–ASA band structure calculations within the local spin density approximation have been performed to explain the magnetic and transport properties of BaCoO3. The calculations predict a magnetic and metallic ground state as energetically favored. BaCoO3 shows no long-range magnetic ordering, however, and only poor conductivity. The magnetic energy is low and the compound shows glassy susceptibility behavior at low temperatures. From the band structure we find Mott–Hubbard localization to be unlikely, and instead propose Anderson localization as a possible origin of the observed behavior. Calculations on slightly distorted structures exclude the possibility of a Peierls distort…

Polar bosons in one-dimensional disordered optical lattices

2013

We analyze the effects of disorder and quasi-disorder on the ground-state properties of ultra-cold polar bosons in optical lattices. We show that the interplay between disorder and inter-site interactions leads to rich phase diagrams. A uniform disorder leads to a Haldane-insulator phase with finite parity order, whereas the density-wave phase becomes a Bose-glass at very weak disorder. For quasi-disorder, the Haldane insulator connects with a gapped generalized incommesurate density wave without an intermediate critical region.
