2016

In her seventh hagiographical poem, «Dionysius» (or «Passio sancti Dionysii egregii martyris»), Hrotsvit of Gandersheim (935-973) elaborates in 266 rhymed hexameters a story already told in the «Vita sancti Dionysii» of Hilduinus, abbot of Saint-Denis, composed about 835 by order of the emperor Louis the Pious, to whom he is devoted. Hrotsvit, in this work, presents the figure of Dionysius as a convert by the apostle Paulus, who consecrates his new Christian life to the conversion of the Pagans, until his martyrdom (which is under the topic of “cephalologie”, a recurring theme in classical and medieval lore). The poem has a big interest, both historical and literary. The paper presents and …

Effect of Vegetation on Fluvial Erosion Processes: Experimental Analysis in a Laboratory Flume

2013

Abstract The plane evolution of a meander wave is determined by the erosion processes at the banks. Particularly, the outer- bank is considerably vulnerable to the erosion processes. Indirect techniques, which act upon the reduction of the effect of the cross-circulation motion, have been recently proposed to limit the outer-bank erosion. This paper shows preliminary results on the role played by vegetation on cross-circulation motion. The analysis is conducted on the basis of experimental data collected in a large amplitude meandering channel constructed at the hydraulic laboratory of DICAM. Maps describing the cross-stream flow, both over the no-vegetated bed and over the vegetated bed, a…

Korelētas nesakārtotības ietekme uz lokalizācijas parādību viendimensionālos ciešās saites modeļos

2021

Zvirbulis. Kosmoss. Akvareļi

2019

Pirmā “Muzeja sērijas” grāmata “Zvirbulis. Kosmoss. Akvareļi” ir veltījums Latvijas Universitātes īpašumā esošajai muzejisko priekšmetu kolekcijai – mākslas darbiem, kas tapuši par godu īpašam notikumam kosmonautikas vēsturē – ievērojamā raķešu konstruktora un izgudrotāja Frīdriha Candera simtgades svinībām. Gleznotājs Juris Zvirbulis savdabīgā kolorītā akvareļu ciklā fiksējis vēsturisko notikumu, personu un kosmisko tēlu pasauli.

Effect of Handedness on Mental Rotation

2018

The impact of the dominant hand on the response time and precision in mental rotational tasks seems to be controversial. The goal of this study was to compare the differences in response times of mental rotation tasks when the task is performed with the dominant or non-dominant hand. In this study, 44 right-handers and 45 left-handers participated in mental rotation tests with 2-D and 3-D figures. Findings indicate that the right-handers had shorter response times than left-handers in tests with both types of figures.

A Eulogy in Honour of Anders Johan Lexell, an 18th Century Finnish Mathematician

2016

We present a poem written in the honour of Anders Johan Lexell (1740–1784), a mathematician of Finnish origin, who became a collaborator and successor of Leonhard Euler. The poem was composed in Latin by Fredrik Pryss (1741–1767) in the honour of the 18-year-old promising young man in 1759. We discuss the poem itself and its connections to ancient poetic tradition as well as the foresight of Pryss in seeing the career that lay ahead of Lexell. We find that the poem is of excellent quality as a piece of art following ancient style in form, language and content. Discussing Lexell’s life in light of the poem reveals that Pryss did see that Lexell would rise to fame, but not how. peerReviewed
