Human and animal fascioliasis in andean regions of argentina: lymnaeid vectors and livestock reservoirs

2018

2005

Concerning the evidence for sheep in Gaul.- In northern Gaul, bones of sheep and goat are found in most Iron Age sites, farms, villages, graves and shrines. It is difficult to establish a good distinction between the bones of these two species, but sheep are more numerous than goat. This short paper deals with the use of these animals in domestic and ritual practices over a long period, from the Late Bronze Age to the beginning of Roman period. The fact that these animals are represented by bones encourages the study of meat consumption. Mutton is consumed in domestic contexts, but it is also offered during banquets in shrines, public areas in villages or other places, and plays a role duri…

Os, Sr, Nd, Pb, O isotope and trace element data from the Ferrar flood basalts, antarctica: evidence for an enriched subcontinental lithospheric sour…

1996

Os, Sr, Nd, Pb and O isotopes and trace element data are reported for basaltic andesite and andesite whole rocks and, in part, for selected mineral separates from the Jurassic Ferrar flood basalt province. Radiogenic Sr (> 0.709), unradiogenic Nd (εNd= −3 to −5), and radiogenic Pb isotopes, as well as low Nb/La ratios of 0.4 – 0.6 and Nb/La ratios between 0.45 and 0.6 are found for all rocks including our most primitive sample (Mg# = 71.9). This indicates involvement of either continental crust or enriched lithospheric mantle in magma genesis. 187Re/188Os correlates strongly with 187Os/188Os, with an age of 172 ± 5 Ma, in agreement with published Arsingle bondAr data. Initial 187Os/188Os of…

Demo 162.

A classroom demonstration is presented showing that the carbon filament in the light bulb vibrates when AC current flows and is approached by a magnet. This phenomenon shows that an element of electric current is a source of the magnetic field and illustrates the Lorentz force.

Volcanic products of Lipari (Aeolian islands, Italy): Multivariate analysis of petrographic and radiometric data

2010

Abstract A petrographic and radiometric study, along with statistical multivariate analysis of volcanic products of the island of Lipari (Aeolian islands, Italy) was carried out. The volcanological history of Lipari was reconstructed defining two stages (pre- and post-erosive stages) further on subdivided in four volcanic phases, each of which characterized by products with a particular chemical composition and separated by stratigraphic unconformities. The correlations between petrographic features, determined by X-ray fluorescence, and volcanological history of the island highlight a gradual differentiation with younger rocks showing a more acid chemical composition than the older ones. R…

New insights into the magmatic-hydrothermal system and volatile budget of Lastarria volcano, Chile: Integrated results from the 2014 IAVCEI CCVG 12th…

2018

Recent geophysical evidence for large-scale regional crustal inflation and localized crustal magma intrusion has made Lastarria volcano (northern Chile) the target of numerous geological, geophysical, and geochemical studies. The chemical composition of volcanic gases sampled during discrete campaigns from Lastarria volcano indicated a well-developed hydrothermal system from direct fumarole samples in A.D. 2006, 2008, and 2009, and shallow magma degassing using measurements from in situ plume sampling techniques in 2012. It is unclear if the differences in measured gas compositions and resulting interpretations were due to artifacts of the different sampling methods employed, short-term exc…

Xenoliths from the sub-volcanic lithosphere of Mt Taranaki, New Zealand

2010

Abstract Mount Taranaki is located 140 km west of the Taupo Volcanic Zone and represents the most westerly expression of subduction-related volcanism on the North Island of New Zealand. Taranaki is a predominantly high-K arc volcano but compositions range from basaltic andesite to andesite with minor dacite and basalt. The sub-volcanic basement under Taranaki is thought to comprise calc–alkaline plutonic and metamorphic rocks of the Median Batholith, overlain by a sequence of Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments. Taranaki lavas contain abundant xenoliths that represent samples of the upper to lower crust beneath the volcano. The xenolith suite has been initially organised into six groups based…
