Changes of humic substances characteristics from forested to cultivated soils in Ethiopia

2006

The dynamics of the stable fractions of soil organic matter (SOM), the humic substances, has been rarely studied in tropical soils. We evaluated extraction yields, elemental composition, isotopic d 13 C abundance and solid-state 13 C NMR spectra of humic fractions isolated from five forested and cultivated soils in Ethiopia in order to assess the influence of deforestation and subsequent cultivation on the composition of humic fractions. In all locations, humic (HA) and fulvic (FA) acids, humin (HU) and a humic hydrophobic fraction extracted with an acetone–HCl solution (HE) were decreased as a result of deforestation and cultivation, but the magnitude of decrease was site-specific. While t…

Composition and antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of Achillea falcata L. (Asteraceae).

2005

The composition of the essential oil from aerial parts of Achillea falcata L. (Asteraceae) growing wild in Lebanon was analysed by GC and GC–MS; 58 compounds, representing 94.4% of the oil, were identified. Isomers of the cyclobutane ethanol, 1-methyl-2-(1-methylethenyl), grandisol (21.4%) and fragranol (16.8%) were the main components of the oil. Also abundant were artemisia ketone (5.2%), terpinen-4-ol (4.5%) and 1,8-cineole (4.0%). The essential oil shows inhibitory activity mainly against Gram-positive bacteria.

Characterization of the porous structure of Chilean volcanic soils by nitrogen adsorption and mercury porosimetry

2004

Pore volume, specific surface area (SSA), and total intragranular porosity (TIP) of Chilean soils derived from volcanic materials were studied. Soil samples involving the 0-15 and 15-30 cm depth of virgin and cultivated Collipulli (Ultisol) and Diguillin (Andisol) soils at two particle size fractions (<1 mm and <2 µm) were considered. From mercury porosimetry and N2 adsorption, mainly mesopores (pore diameter, dpore, about 10 nm) were determined for <1 mm Collipulli samples. Diguillin <1 mm soil shows macroporosity with dpore from 70 nm to 7000 nm. The clay fraction of Collipulli has macropores (dpore from 2000 nm to 40000 nm) and mesopores (dpore from 3 nm to 23 nm), while for Diguillin cl…

Origin of clay minerals in soils on pyroclastic deposits in the island of Lipari (Italy)

2005

The island of Lipari (Italy) is characterized by calc-alkaline to potassic volcanism and a Mediterranean-type climate. The mineralogical and chemical features of two different soil profiles with ages of 92,000 and 10,000–40,000 y, respectively, have been investigated. There were no Andisols, but Vitric and Vertic Cambisols have developed at both sites. Although the morphology of the soils was similar, remarkable differences in the clay mineralogy between the two sites were observed. The site with the Vitric Cambisol was associated with the weathering sequence: glass → halloysite → kaolinite or interstratified kaolinite-2:1 clay minerals. Both sites had smectite in the clay fraction and, to …
