This study evaluates the influence of novel galacto-oligosaccharides derived from lactulose (GOS-Lu), kojibiose or 4′-galactosyl-kojibiose in hematological parameters of Fe homeostasis using Fe-deficient animals. Liver TfR-2, IL-6, NFκB and PPAR-γ expression (mRNA) were also determined by RT-qPCR analyses, and active hepcidin peptide production and short chain fatty acids by LC coupled to MS/MS or UV detection. T cell large granular lymphocytic (LGL) leukemia is a rare condition accounting for 2–3% of all mature lymphoid leukemias. Here, we present the case of a 73-year-old woman presenting with neutropenia and anemia (hemoglobin 9.9 g/dl). Hematological assessment revealed the presence of a T cell LGL leukemia. At the time of T cell LGL leukemia diagnosis, the patient developed xerophthalmia and xerostomia, and a diagnosis of Sjögren’s syndrome was made following salivary gland biopsy. Genetic factors can influence the outcome of antiviral therapy in chronic hepatitis C (HCV). We evaluated the role of interleukin-28B single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and inosine triphosphatase (ITPA) gene variants in HCV cirrhosis treated with Peg-Interferon and ribavirin. A prospective cohort of 233 patients with compensated cirrhosis received 1-1.5 μg/kg/week of Peg-Interferon alpha-2b plus 1000-1200 mg/day of RBV for 48 weeks. The oxygen status of arterial human blood is described at least by four variables: Oxygen partial pressure (pO2, mmHg), oxygen saturation (sO2, %), hemoglobin content (cHb, g/dL) and oxygen content (cO2, mL/dL). Beside perfusion, however, the oxygen supply of all organs is decisively determined by the mean capillary pO2 which itself is primarily dependent on the arterial cO2. Therefore, the oxygen availability (cardiac output x caO2, mL/min) may be described by the cO2 value in arterial blood or those variables who determine the latter one. Gastrodiscoidiasis is a snail-transmitted zoonotic infection caused by the digenean trematode Gastrodiscoides hominis, which is the only species in the genus Gastrodiscoides infecting humans. We report a case of human gastrodiscoidiasis in a 66 years-old Nepali man without history of travels outside of Nepal who was admitted in the hospital with pain in upper abdomen for 4 months with history of passage of black-tarry stools, anemia and eosinophilia. During upper endoscopy a living trematode worm was seen in the antrum of the stomach. After isolation, the worm was identified morphologically as Gastrodiscoides hominis. Two of three brothers with the classical signs of ataxia telangiectasia were investigated for their immunological disorders at the ages of 13 and 16 years, respectively. The elder brother also suffers from autoimmune hemolytic anemia, a complication which has not yet been described in the course of ataxia telangiectasia. Immunological investigations made in both brothers showed a reduction in the number and function of T lymphocytes.
