Cardiovascular events among reproductive and menopausal age women with polycystic ovary syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis

2019

This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence (P)/hazard ratio (HR) of cardiovascular (CV) events among reproductive age and menopausal age women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in comparison with healthy controls. PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Web of science, and Google scholar were searched for retrieving observational studies published up to April 2018 investigating CV events in patients with PCOS. The primary outcomes were a composite outcome of CV events [including coronary arterial disease (CAD), cardiovascular disease (CVD), myocardial infarction (MI), angina, heart failure, and ischemic heart disease] and mortality due to CV events; secondary outcomes were specific CVD events, …

Preclinical atherosclerosis and metabolic syndrome increase cardio- and cerebrovascular events rate: a 20-year follow up

2013

BACKGROUND: Intima-media thickness (IMT) is a validated marker of preclinical atherosclerosis and a predictor of cardiovascular events. PATIENTS: We studied a population of 529 asymptomatic patients (age 62 ± 12.8 years), divided into two groups of subjects with and without Metabolic Syndrome (MetS). METHODS: All patients, at baseline, have had a carotid ultrasound evaluation and classified in two subgroups: the first one without atherosclerotic lesions and the second one with preclinical atherosclerosis (increased IMT or asymptomatic carotid plaque). Cardiovascular endpoints were investigated in a 20-years follow-up. RESULTS: There were 242 cardiovascular events: 144 among patients with Me…

Right coronary artery arising from pulmonary trunk: assessment with conventional coronary angiography and multislice computed tomography coronary ang…

2009

We present a case of a 59-year-old man who was admitted to the hospital because of atypical chest pain and dyspnea. Conventional coronary angiography showed an anomalous origin of the right coronary artery from the pulmonary trunk. The patient underwent multislice computed tomography in order to clarify the origin and course of the anomalous vessel. The aim of this report is to emphasize the role of multislice computed tomography as an accurate noninvasive imaging tool in the evaluation of coronary artery anomalies.

Isosorbide dinitrate: pharmacokinetics after intravenous administration.

1982

Isosorbide dinitrate (ISDN) is an important organic nitrate found therapeutically useful in its sublingual and oral forms in various cardiovascular diseases such as angina pectoris (1) and congestive heart failure (2). Recently Distante et al. (3) showed that an intravenous infusion of this drug, at 0.021–0.083 mg/min is also effective in managing unstable angina. The availability of an intravenous dosage form of ISDN not only affords the opportunity to characterize the pharmacokinetics of this drug after this particular mode of therapy, but also gives the possibility of assessing the bio-availability of this drug after other (e.g., oral) routes of administration in patients. This latter po…

Midregional Proadrenomedullin for Prediction of Cardiovascular Events in Coronary Artery Disease: Results from the AtheroGene Study

2011

Abstract BACKGROUND Midregional proadrenomedullin (MR-proADM) is a newly identified prognostic marker in heart failure. We evaluated the prognostic impact of MR-proADM in a cohort of patients with symptomatic coronary artery disease according to their clinical presentation. METHODS We measured baseline MR-proADM concentrations in 2240 individuals from the prospective AtheroGene study and evaluated the prognostic impact on future fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events during a follow-up period of 3.6 (1.6) years. RESULTS The sample comprised 1355 individuals with stable angina pectoris (SAP) and 885 with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). A cardiovascular event occurred in 192 people. Individu…

Analysis of N-terminal-pro-brain natriuretic peptide and C-reactive protein for risk stratification in stable and unstable coronary artery disease: r…

2004

Aims N-terminal-pro-brain natriuretic peptide (Nt-proBNP) is a reliable risk predictor in acute coronary artery disease (CAD). Little is known about patients with stable angina pectoris (SAP). We aimed to investigate the prognostic impact of Nt-proBNP in a population with CAD especially focussing on patients with SAP. Methods and results We obtained baseline samples from a prospective cohort of 904 consecutive patients with CAD. Cardiovascular events were registered during followup (median 2 years; maximum 3.7 years). Baseline Nt-proBNP was significantly higher among individuals with cardiovascular events compared with those without (711.5 vs. 238.8 pg/mL; P , 0.0001). A similar association…

Effect of part-time cardiac catheterization facilities in patients with acute myocardial infarction

2017

Although the easy availability of invasive cardiac care facilities is associated with an increase in their use, their influence on outcomes is not clear. We sought to investigate whether a newly available cardiac catheterization laboratory (CCL) performing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) on a part-time (PT) basis might improve outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI).This was an observational cohort study that included all consecutive patients with AMI admitted to a secondary-level hospital in Spain before and after the PT-CCL opened in January 2006: during 1998-2005 and 2006-2014, respectively. All-cause in-hospital and long-term mortality were the co-primary en…

Higher intracoronary attenuation improves diagnostic accuracy in MDCT coronary angiography

2006

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the amount of intracoronary attenuation influences the diagnostic accuracy of MDCT coronary angiography in the detection of clinically significant stenosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred twenty patients in sinus rhythm with suspected coronary artery disease who underwent MDCT of the heart and conventional coronary angiography were retrospectively selected. The population was divided into two groups depending on median (326 H) coronary vascular enhancement (i.e., low attenuation and high attenuation). The diagnostic accuracy of MDCT for the detection of clinically significant coronary artery lesions (> or = 50% lumen reduct…

Computed tomography coronary angiography vs. stress ECG in patients with stable angina

2009

PURPOSE: This study compared the role of multislice computed tomography coronary angiography (MSCT-CA) and stress electrocardiography (ECG) in the diagnostic workup of patients with chronic chest pain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MSCT-CA was performed in 43 patients (31 men, 12 women, mean age 58.8+/-7.7 years) with stable angina after a routine diagnostic workup involving stress ECG and conventional CA. The following inclusion criteria were adopted: sinus rhythm and ability to hold breath for 12 s. Beta-blockers were administered in patients with heart rate>or=70 beats/minute. In order to identify or exclude patients with significant stenoses (>or=50% lumen), we determined posttest likelihood r…
