Chromatic-achromatic perimetry in four clinic cases: Glaucoma and diabetes
2015
Color perimetry has interesting clinical application for the diagnosis and detection of certain eye conditions, due to the variations that certain diseases can cause in chromatic thresholds, both in the red-green (RG) and the blue-yellow (BY) pathways.[1,2,3,4] The separate study of the visual function of both the chromatic and achromatic mechanisms could be more efficient in detecting sensitivity variations, and such variations would not be obscured by the intrusion of other mechanisms. Currently, the supply of conventional perimeters that are capable of performing a chromatic perimetry test is very limited and with reduced options regarding the possibility of choosing the physical charact…
Conservative parotidectomy in infancy and childhood
1975
Summary The indication for operations of benign tumours of the salivary glands in infancy and childhood is taken with great caution and is only partially recommended as the therapy of choice. This applies especially to hemangiomas, since spontaneous retrogression has been observed and there is the danger of damage to the facial nerve during surgery. Knowing unsatisfactory late cases of hemangiomas the author recommends conservative parotidectomy in cases of fast-growing hemangiomas. The anatomic structures in infancy, as well as the lack of pneumatisation of the mastoid process and the fragility of the cartilagineous auditory meatus should be taken into consideration during surgical explora…
Study of smartphone suitability for mapping of skin chromophores.
2015
RGB (red-green-blue) technique for mapping skin chromophores by smartphones is proposed and studied. Three smartphones of different manufacturers were tested on skin phantoms and in vivo on benign skin lesions using a specially designed light source for illumination. Hemoglobin and melanin indices obtained by these smartphones showed differences in both tests. In vitro tests showed an increment of hemoglobin and melanin indices with the concentration of chromophores in phantoms. In vivo tests indicated higher hemoglobin index in hemangiomas than in nevi and healthy skin, and nevi showed higher melanin index compared to the healthy skin. Smartphones that allow switching off the automatic cam…
Linfangioma cistico mesenterico. Descrizione di un caso e revisione della letteratura.
2006
Objective: The Authors report their experience in diagnosis and treatment of one case of mesenteric cystic lymphangioma; recent international literature review. Experimental Design: Complete clinical report. Diagnostic, clinical and prognostic indication, evaluation of effectiveness of radical surgical treatment and follow-up. Setting: Operative Unit of General and Thoracic Surgery. University "Paolo Giaccone" of Palermo. Intervention: Radical surgical treatment, according to international guide-lines. Results: Complete recovery with "restitutio ad integrum". No relapse were recorded at short follow up. Conclusions: Even when asymptomatic and discovered incidentally, LCM must be treated sur…
Intraoral epithelioid hemangioendothelioma: a case report and review of the literature.
2009
The epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EH) is an uncommon angiocentric neoplasm of borderline or intermediate malignant potential, between the hemangioma and conventional angiosarcoma. It is characterized by the proliferation of endothelial cells with epithelioid or histiocitóide morphology with vacuolated cytoplasm and occasional eosinophilic spindle cells. Shows potential for local recurrence as well as the ability to metastasize. Rarely affects the oral cavity, it have been described from 1975 until 2008 only 27 oral cases. Morphologically the EHs may be confused with other lesions, from a hemangioma to a squamous cell carcinoma, and thus immunohistochemical analysis is required. This pap…
Oral encapsulated vascular malformation: an undescribed presentation in the mouth
2016
Vascular lesions have been classified in two broad categories, hemangiomas and malformations. Encapsulated vascular lesions have not been reported in the oral cavity, but they were described in other sites, mainly in the orbit. Herein, we present a case of an oral encapsulated vascular lesion located in the right buccal mucosa of a 69-year-old male, including histological and immunohistochemical description and a literature review. Key words:Buccal mucosa, hemangioma, vascular malformation, oral cavity.
Acquired elastotic hemangioma-like changes and eccrine sweat duct squamous metaplasia in lichen simplex chronicus/prurigo nodularis-like lesions of t…
2017
Background The so-called acquired elastotic hemangioma (AEH) represents a peculiar vascular lesion affecting the sun-damaged skin of the extensor surface of the forearms or the lateral aspect of the neck of middle-aged or elderly women. Methods This is a clinicopathological and immunohistochemical study of a series of 6 lesions located on the knee or elbow showing epithelial features of lichen simplex chronicus (LSC)/prurigo nodularis (PN) with a marked subepidermal vascular proliferation closely resembling AEH. Results Microscopically, all cases of cutaneous lesions showed epithelial features of LSC/PN, that is compact hyperkeratosis with focal parakeratosis, irregular acanthosis, prominen…
Comprehensive three‐dimensional morphology of neoangiogenesis in pulmonary veno‐occlusive disease and pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis
2019
Abstract Pulmonary veno‐occlusive disease (PVOD) is a rare lung disease characterized by fibrotic narrowing of pulmonary veins leading to pulmonary hypertension (PH) and finally to death by right heart failure. PVOD is often accompanied by pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis (PCH), a marked abnormal proliferation of pulmonary capillaries. Both morphological patterns often occur together and are thought to be distinct manifestations of the same disease process and accordingly are classified together in group 1′ of the Nice classification of PH. The underlying mechanisms of these aberrant remodeling processes remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the three‐dimensional struc…
