Ruptured angiomyolipoma of the kidney: a rare differential diagnosis of flank pain.

2017

Angiomyolipomas (AMLs) of the kidney are typically benign and rare, with an incidence of 2% of all renal masses [1]. They are associated with tuberous sclerosis in about 20% of cases. If ruptured, ...

Characterization of conservatively resected renal tumors using automated image analysis DNA cytometry

1991

The DNA histograms of 57 conservatively resected renal tumors were studied using automated image analysis DNA cytometry (Leytas II). Forty-nine of the analyzed tumors were renal cell carcinomas, six were oncocytomas, one was an angiomyolipoma, and one was a renal cell adenoma. On the basis of their DNA histograms, diploid, tetraploid, and aneuploid tumors could be distinguished. Aneuploid tumors could be subtyped further according to the DNA content of the stem cell line as hyperdiploid, hypertriploid, or hypertetraploid. Eight of the tumors were characterized by a combination of diploid and hypertriploid stem cell lines. During a mean follow-up of 5 years, only the two patients with a pure…

Imaging features of solid renal masses

2017

The widespread use of abdominal imaging techniques has increased the detection of solid renal masses over the past years. Imaging plays a crucial role in the management and surveillance and in determining which lesions need treatment. The "classical angiomyolipoma" is the only benign solid renal mass that can be characterized with confidence by imaging through the detection of a fat-containing lesion without calcifications. There is a large overlap of imaging features between benign and malignant renal masses that often makes difficult a correct characterization of these lesions. In this review, we discuss the imaging features of the main solid renal masses that may suggest a likely benign …

Small solid renal masses: Characterization by diffusion-weighted MRI at 3 T

2013

AIM: To describe the appearance of small solid renal lesions (≤3 cm) on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to determine whether ADC measurements may help to differentiate benign from malignant small solid renal masses. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Thirty-five patients with 47 small renal masses (23 malignant, 24 benign) who underwent 3 T MRI of the kidney using diffusion-weighted sequences (b values of 0 and 1000 s/mm(2)) were retrospectively evaluated. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of diffusion-weighted images was performed. RESULTS: Most lesions were hyperintense to kidney on high b-value diffusion-weighted images and hypointense on apparent diffusion coefficient (A…

Angiomyolipome der Nieren bei Morbus Bourneville-Pringle

1984

Three cases with renal angiomyolipoma in Bourneville's disease are reported. In two patients advanced renal insufficiency developed, one being treated by chronic intermittent hemodialysis. In the third patient rupture of angiomyolipoma with severe retroperitoneal bleeding occurred. In one patient, tumorous enlargement initially was diagnosed only in the right kidney and preceded angiomyolipoma of the left kidney for several years. In this patient nephrectomy was performed because malignancy was assumed before diagnosis of Bourneville's disease was established. Occasionally, histology may suggest sarcomatous changes. However, the absence of distant metastasis and the overall long survival of…

Uncommon imaging evolutions of focal liver lesions in cirrhosis.

2019

Objective: The purpose of this article is to describe and illustrate uncommon imaging evolutions of benign (i.e., cyst, hemangioma, focal nodular hyperplasia-like nodules, and hepatic angiomyolipoma) and malignant (i.e., HCC and non HCC malignancies) lesions in a cirrhotic liver. The content highlights relevant pathogenesis and imaging clues for proper differential diagnosis. Revision of prior imaging and knowledge of these scenarios may help the abdominal radiologist to reach a noninvasive diagnosis and direct the patient to the most appropriate clinical management. Conclusion: Uncommon imaging evolutions of focal liver lesions in cirrhosis may represent a challenge for the abdominal radio…

Management of Renal Angiomyolipoma: A Report of 14 Cases and Review of the Literature

1994

14 patients with renal angiomyolipoma are presented. Two of them had tuberous sclerosis (TS) with synchronous bilateral and multiple tumors. Two other patients without TS also had multiple tumors in 1 kidney. More than half the patients were symptomatic (n = 8), 2 of them with spontaneous rupture of the tumor. Misdiagnosis, spontaneous rupture and tumor growth can be prevented by utilizing conservative, organ-sparing techniques. In cases of solitary kidneys with large and/or hemorrhagic angiomyolipoma, superselective arterial embolization is indicated.

Sporadic oral angiomyolipoma: Case report

2007

Angiomyolipoma (AML) is a rare, benign tumour composed of a variable proportion of lipocytes, smooth muscle and thick-walled blood vessels. AML is part of a family of tumours arising from perivascular epithelioid cells (PEComas), and many cases are associated with tuberous sclerosis, with the kidney being the most frequent site involved. We report a case of sporadic AML in the hard palate of a 52-year-old male, an extremely unusual location for this tumour. Differentiation from other benign and malignant oral mesenchymal lesions depends on recognition of the three histologic components, and immunohistochemical techniques may be helpful. AML occurring in the head and neck do not express HMB-…

Angiomyolipoma of the upper lip : case report and review of the literature

2007

Angiomyolipoma (AML) is a hamartomatous growth that usually affects the kidney. One third of patients with AML present with manifestations of tuberous sclerosis. Oral AML is rare with only 6 cases reported in the English-language literature. In the present case, AML was located in the upper lip of a 43 year-old woman. Clinically, it presented as a firm nodule, well circumscribed and measuring 1x2 cm. It was surgically excised. Histopathological analysis showed a lesion composed of an admixture of smooth muscle cells, blood vessels, and adipose tissue. The immunohistochemical study revealed positivity for vimentin, smooth muscle actin, pan specific muscle actin and desmin. CD68, CD34 and mas…
