Protein kinase C-inhibiting properties of the losartan metabolite EXP3179 make the difference.

2009

The inhibition of the renin-angiotensin axis with the angiotensin II (ATII) receptor blockers, such as losartan, candesartan, and valsartan, has been demonstrated, similar to angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, to reduce mortality in patients with arterial hypertension, chronic congestive heart failure, and acute myocardial infarction.1 Initially, the ATII receptor antagonist losartan helped to demonstrate new classes of ATII receptors and substantially expanded our knowledge about the cardiovascular effects of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and its effector peptide ATII. Researchers dealing with this compound soon revealed that, beyond its antihypertensive effects attribute…

Effect of SGLT-2 inhibition in abdominal aortic aneurysm development. Role of RORa in adipose tissue inflammation associated to obesity

2021

Plasma PAF-acetylhydrolase in patients with coronary artery disease: results of a cross-sectional analysis.

2003

Inflammation underlies both onset and perpetuation of atherosclerosis. Plasma lipoproteins transport the platelet-activating factor-acetylhydrolase (PAF-AH) with potentially anti-inflammatory activities. Our aim was to determine whether PAF-AH activity was associated with inflammatory markers and with coronary artery disease (CAD). PAF-AH activity and a panel of inflammatory mediators were measured in plasma of 496 patients with CAD and in 477 controls; 276 patients presented with stable angina pectoris and 220 with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Individuals within the highest quartile of PAF-AH activity had an 1.8-fold increase in CAD risk [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.01 to 3.2; P = 0.…

IgA-Dominant Infection-Associated Glomerulonephritis Following SARS-CoV-2 Infection

2021

The renal involvement of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been reported. The etiology of kidney injury appears to be tubular, mainly due to the expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, the key joint receptor for SARS-CoV-2; however, cases with glomerular implication have also been documented. The multifactorial origin of this renal involvement could include virus-mediated injury, cytokine storm, angiotensin II pathway activation, complement dysregulation, hyper-coagulation, and microangiopathy. We present the renal histological findings from a patient who developed acute kidney injury and de novo nephrotic syndrome, highly suggestive of acute IgA-domina…
