Preventing the oil film instability in rotor-dynamics

Horizontal rotor systems on lubricated journal bearings may incur instability risks depending on the load and the angular speed. The instability is associated with the asymmetry of the stiffness matrix of the bearings around the equilibrium position, in like manner as the internal hysteretic instability somehow, where some beneficial effect is indeed obtainable by an anisotropic configuration of the support stiffness. Hence, the idea of the present analysis is to check if similar advantages are also obtainable towards the oil film instability. First M87 Event Horizon Telescope Results. V. Physical Origin of the Asymmetric Ring

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) has mapped the central compact radio source of the elliptical galaxy M87 at 1.3 mm with unprecedented angular resolution. Here we consider the physical implications of the asymmetric ring seen in the 2017 EHT data. To this end, we construct a large library of models based on general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations and synthetic images produced by general relativistic ray tracing. We compare the observed visibilities with this library and confirm that the asymmetric ring is consistent with earlier predictions of strong gravitational lensing of synchrotron emission from a hot plasma orbiting near the black hole event horizon. Hot spots and gluon field fluctuations as causes of eccentricity in small systems

We calculate eccentricities in high energy proton-nucleus collisions, by calculating correlation functions of the energy density field of the Glasma immediately after the collision event at proper time tau = 0. We separately consider the effects of color charge and geometrical hot spot fluctuations, analytically performing the averages over both in a dilute-dense limit. We show that geometric fluctuations of hot spots inside the proton are the dominant source of eccentricity whereas color charge fluctuations only give a negligible correction. The size and number of hot spots are the most important parameters characterizing the eccentricities.

An implementation of the gauge-origin independent calculation of magnetizabilities and rotational g tensors at the coupled-cluster (CC) level is presented. The properties of interest are obtained as second derivatives of the energy with respect to the external magnetic field (in the case of the magnetizability) or with respect to magnetic field and rotational angular momentum (in the case of the rotational g tensor), while gauge-origin independence and fast basis-set convergence are ensured by using gauge-including atomic orbitals (London atomic orbitals) as well as their extension to treat rotational perturbations (rotational London atomic orbitals). Charged current weak electroproduction of the Delta resonance

We study the weak production of $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ (i.e., ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}}+\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}{\ensuremath{\Delta}}^{0}+{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{e}$ and ${e}^{+}+\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}{\ensuremath{\Delta}}^{++}+{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{e})$ in the intermediate energy range corresponding to the Mainz and TJNAF electron accelerators. The differential cross sections $\ensuremath{\sigma}(\ensuremath{\theta})$ are found to be of the order of ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}39}$ cm${}^{2}$/sr, over a range of angles which increases with energy. Context. Red supergiant stars possess surface features and extended molecular atmospheres. Photospheric convection may be a crucial factor of the levitation of the outer atmospheric layers. However, the mechanism responsible is still poorly understood. Aims. We image the stellar surface of V602 Carinae (V602 Car) to constrain the morphology and contrast of the surface features and of the extended atmospheric layers. Methods. Generation of programmable 3D optical vortex structures through devil’s vortex-lens arrays

Different spatial distributions of optical vortices have been generated and characterized by implementing arrays of devil's vortex lenses in a reconfigurable spatial light modulator. A simple design procedure assigns the preferred position and topological charge value to each vortex in the structure, tuning the desired angular momentum. Distributions with charges and momenta of the opposite sign have been experimentally demonstrated. Study of internal structures of 9,10Be and 10B in scattering of 4He from 9Be

A study of inelastic scattering and single-particle transfer reactions was performed by an alpha beam at 63 MeV on a 9$Be target. Angular distributions of the differential cross sections for the 9Be(4He,4He')9Be*, 9Be(4He,3He)10Be and 9Be(4He,t)10B reactions were measured. Experimental angular distributions of the differential cross sections for the ground state and a few low-lying states were analyzed in the framework of the optical model, coupled channels and distorted-wave Born approximation. An analysis of the obtained spectroscopic factors was performed.
Kerman-Onishi conditions in self-consistent tilted-axis-cranking mean-field calculations

\item[Background] For cranked mean-field calculations with arbitrarily oriented rotational frequency vector $\boldsymbol{\omega}$ in the intrinsic frame, one has to employ constraints on average values of the quadrupole-moment tensor, so as to keep the nucleus in the principal-axis reference frame. We study the behaviour of a charge bound on a graphene annulus under the assumption that the particle can be treated as a massless Dirac electron. The eigenstates and relative energy are found in closed analytical form. Subsequently, we consider a large annulus with radius ρ∈[5000,10,000]a0 in the presence of a static magnetic field orthogonal to its plane and again the eigenstates and eigenenergies of the Dirac electron are found in both analytical and numerical form. The possibility of designing filiform currents by controlling the orbital angular momentum and the magnetic field is shown.
