Apparent universality of semiclassical gravity in the far field limit

The universality of semiclassical gravity is investigated by considering the behavior of the quantities < ��^2 > and < {T^a}_b >, along with quantum corrections to the effective Newtonian potential in the far field limits of static spherically symmetric objects ranging from stars in the weak field Newtonian limit to black holes. For scalar fields it is shown that when differences occur they all result from the behavior of a single mode with zero frequency and angular momentum and are thus due to a combination of infrared and s-wave effects. Superconformal mechanics, black holes, and non-linear realizations

The OSp(2|2)-invariant planar dynamics of a D=4 superparticle near the horizon of a large mass extreme black hole is described by an N=2 superconformal mechanics, with the SO(2) charge being the superparticle's angular momentum. The {\it non-manifest} superconformal invariance of the superpotential term is shown to lead to a shift in the SO(2) charge by the value of its coefficient, which we identify as the orbital angular momentum. The full SU(1,1|2)-invariant dynamics is found from an extension to N=4 superconformal mechanics.

Quantum and Braided Integrals

We give a pedagogical introduction to integration techniques appropriate for non-commutative spaces while presenting some new results as well. A rather detailed discussion outlines the motivation for adopting the Hopf algebra language. We then present some trace formulas for the integral on Hopf algebras and show how to treat the $\int 1=0$ case. We extend the discussion to braided Hopf algebras relying on diagrammatic techniques. The use of the general formulas is illustrated by explicitly worked out examples.

Quantum Backreaction on Three-Dimensional Black Holes and Naked Singularities

We analytically investigate backreaction by a quantum scalar field on two rotating Ba\~nados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) geometries: that of a black hole and that of a naked singularity. In the former case, we explore the quantum effects on various regions of relevance for a rotating black hole space-time. We find that the quantum effects lead to a growth of both the event horizon and the radius of the ergosphere, and to a reduction of the angular velocity, compared to the unperturbed values. Furthermore, they give rise to the formation of a curvature singularity at the Cauchy horizon and show no evidence of the appearance of a superradiant instability. On the optimum form of an aperture for a confinement of the optically excited electric near field.

Summary A triangular nanoaperture in an aluminium film was used previously as a probe in a scanning near-field optical microscope to image single fluorescent molecules with an optical resolution down to 30 nm. The high-resolution capability of the triangular aperture probe is because of a highly confined spot of the electric near field which emerges at an edge of the aperture, when the incident light is polarized perpendicular to this edge. Transition probability studies in175Au

2013

Transition probabilities have been measured between the low-lying yrast states in 175Au by employing the recoil distance Doppler-shift method combined with the selective recoil-decay tagging technique. Reduced transition probabilities and magnitudes of transition quadrupole moments have been extracted from measured lifetimes allowing dramatic changes in nuclear structure within a low excitation-energy range to probed. The transition quadrupole moment data are discussed in terms of available systematics as a function of atomic number and aligned angular momentum.

I would like to thank the authors for writing this interesting article dealing with unsteady stage-discharge relationships for sharp-crested weirs. The operation of triangular and rectangular sharp-crested weirs in unsteady flow conditions was experimentally investigated. Results indicated the presence of looped rating curves, with transposition of the rising and falling limbs compared to that commonly observed in stream gauge ratings. The authors found that the deviation between steady and unsteady flow rates in the looped rating curves depends on the weir type and the hydrograph gradient (i.e., the temporal depth variation), especially when the latter changes rapidly.
