Interacting with Augmented Environments

Pervasive systems augment environments by integrating information processing into everyday objects and activities. They consist of two parts: a visible part populated by animate (visitors, operators) or inanimate (AI) entities interacting with the environment through digital devices, and an invisible part composed of software objects performing specific tasks in an underlying framework. This paper shows an ongoing work from the University of Palermo''s Department of Computer Science and Engineering that addresses two issues related to simplifying and broadening augmented environment access.

A Composition Approach to Design of Educational Animations

International audience; The educational effectiveness of conventionally designed animations that portray complex, unfamiliar subject matter in a behaviorally realistic fashion too often falls well short of expectations. Previous research indicates that the veridical dynamic properties of these comprehensive animations make a major contribution to their lack of effectiveness. Due to these dynamics, there is a substantial mismatch between the processing demands these animations impose on learners and the characteristics of the human information processing system. Visual Culture and Cultural Heritage: ViC-CH a Synthesis Between Digital Representation and Heritage Experience

The dissemination possibilities offered by digital technologies provide multiple ways of reading and fruition of the cultural heritage. In order to define a visualization and communication strategy through images, the paper shows some of the results of the ViC-CH Visual Culture and Cultural Heritage workshop, which involved the University of Trento and the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. Perceptual Processing and the Comprehension of Relational Information in Dynamic Diagrams

International audience; To date, research on the processing involved in comprehending and learning from animated diagrams has accorded a minor role only to perceptual operations in general and peripheral processing in particular. For those aspects where the role of perception is acknowledged, it is foveal rather than peripheral processing that is regarded as the main player. Dynamic spatial abilities and learning from animation

International audience; This paper presents part of a wider project to create, validate and apply a comprehensive dynamic spatial ability test suitable for use with learning from animation. Four types of test item were devised (two race tasks and two intercept tasks) and tested with forty undergraduate participants. Absolute and relative speed of the objects as well as trajectory directions were manipulated. Task performances and the effect of the manipulated factors are reported. Comparison with a conventional static spatial ability test revealed little correlation, suggesting that dynamic spatial ability can be regarded as a distinct capacity.
