Ion pair complexes and anion binding in the solution of a ditopic receptor.

The synthesis and crystal structures with alkali halides of a ditopic benzo-15-crown-5 bis-urea receptor have been presented. In addition, the anion binding properties of and its alkali metal complexes in solution are presented. A comprehensive single-crystal X-ray crystallographic study of , all together 13 crystal structures, including the ion pair complexes with NaCl, NaBr, NaI, KF, KCl, KBr, KI, RbF, RbCl, and RbI, give a detailed view of how behaves in the solid-state with different alkali halides depending on the size of the cation and anion. The polymerization of n-butyl acrylate initiated by ester enolates in the presence of tetraalkylammonium halide−trialkylaluminum complexes, R4N[AlnR‘3nX] (n = 1, 2), in toluene has a controlled character at −78 °C only for selected combinations of the complex. Quantitative monomer conversions are usually reached with Me4N[AlnBui3nCl] leading to polymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn < 1.2). Kinetic investigations show a complex mechanism of the polymerization, implying an equilibrium between at least two active species. Besides, various acrylate homopolymers and block copolymers (PMMA-b-polyacrylate) can be synthesized with this new initiating system.
Insights into catanionic vesicles thermal transition by NMR spectroscopy

Oppositely charged ionic surfactants can self-assemble into hollow structures, called catanionic vesicles, where the anionic-cationic surfactant pair assumes a double-tailed zwitterionic attitude. In the present work, multilamellar- to-unilamellar thermal transition of a mixed aqueous system of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), with a slight excess of the anionic one, has been investigated by 1H, 2H, 14N NMR spectra and 23Na transverse relaxation measurements. Under appropriate conditions the anionic polymerization of methacrylates proceeds in an ideal manner leading to polymers with narrow molecular weight distributions. From the kinetics of polymerization and from the microstructure of the polymers the existence of different active species is concluded, the most important one being a peripherally solvated contact ion pair. Depending on polymerization conditions two different modes of monomer addition can occur. An electrocyclic ring closure of a 2-azapentadienyl anion generated in situ from a chalcone and glycine ester is the key step of an efficient synthesis of the pyrrole core of the lamellarin alkaloids. A recently developed scalable one-pot procedure provides multigram quantities of a 3,5-diaryl-4-iodopyrrole-2-carboxylate intermediate which is transformed in four further high-yielding operations including a one-pot Pomeranz–Fritsch alkylation/cyclization and an Ullmann-type lactone ring closure into the pentacyclic lamellarin skeleton.

Abstract After efficient extraction by para-aminosalicylate, (hopping, grinding and eventual sonication, the macropolyanions are transformed into their cetyltrimethylammonium salts. These have differing solubilities, strongly depending on ionic strength. The cationic detergent-macropolyanionic salts are solubilized by high salt concentration. Salt is then dialysed out, rendering the polyanions highly insoluble in a sequential fashion. The insolubilized components are determined quantitatively by monitoring turbidity, which in case of DNA is strictly proportionate to its concentration.
