Muscle architecture is an important component of muscle function, and recent studies have shown changes in muscle architecture with fatigue. The stretch-shortening cycle is a natural way to study human locomotion, but little is known about how muscle architecture is affected by this type of exercise. This study investigated potential changes in medial gastrocnemius (MG) muscle architecture after exhaustive stretch-shortening cycle exercise. Male athletes (n = 10) performed maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and maximal drop jump (DJ) tests before and after an exercise task consisting of 100 maximal DJs followed by successive rebound jumping to 70% of the initial maximal height. The exerci…

The proprioceptive insole: A therapeutic aid for the diabetic patient in prevention?

2021

The diabetic foot represents one of the most common complications among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Prevention of the diabetic foot is therefore essential both to ensure the patient a better quality of life and to reduce the costs borne by the NHS and this requires a multidisciplinary approach. It is important to underline that the major complications of the diabetic foot are due to biomechanical, vascular and neuropathic alterations. Diabetic patients are less likely to perform physical exercises and tend to walk less, adopting compensatory strategies based on the type of terrain they find. They walk slower, tend to take shorter steps with a wider base of support, have limited …

Exercise and ankle sprain injuries: a comprehensive review.

2014

Ankle sprains are common in team sports and sports played on courts, and often result in structural and functional alterations that lead to a greater reinjury risk. Specific exercises are often used to promote neuromuscular improvements in the prevention and rehabilitation of ankle injuries. This literature review summarizes the neuromuscular characteristics of common ankle sprains and the effectiveness of exercise as an intervention for improving neuromuscular function and preventing reinjury. Our review found that appropriate exercise prescription can increase static and dynamic balance and decrease injury recurrence. In particular, the addition of dynamic activities in the exercise progr…

A Five-Step Vascular Ultrasound Examination in Heart Failure: The First Two Years of the "ABCDE" G-SIUMB Multicenter Study 2018-2022.

2020

The aim of this study is the creation of a 5-step ultrasound examination to evaluate and monitor Heart Failure (HF) patients during hospitalization and follow-up. “ABCDE” is the acronym of an Italian multicentre study composed of a consecutive sample of HF patients admitted from the Emergency to the Internal Medicine/Geriatric Departments of several Italian hospitals. The “ABCDE” score includes the evaluations of A, the Ankle-brachial index (ABI), B, the B-lines, C, the Carotid intima media thickness (CIMT), D, the Diameter of the abdominal aorta and of the inferior cave vein and E, the echocardiographic assessment of the ejection fraction. This paper reports the preliminary results. Up to …

477 Injury risk in finnish youth floorball: a one-year prospective follow-up study

2016

Background Floorball is a popular team sport in Finland. Previous studies have revealed that injuries are a significant problem in adult floorball. However, epidemiological studies of injuries in youth floorball are lacking. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence, type, and severity of injuries in young floorball players. Methods One-hundred-fifty-six female (n = 57) and male players (n = 99) (mean age 17.1 ± 1.6 years) from nine floorball teams participated in the study. Injury data as well as practice and game exposures were collected over the 12-months period (from May 2013 to April 2014). An injury was defined as having occurred in an organised floorball practice or game…

Estudio presurométrico y biomecánico del pie en el pádel

2014

[EN] Padel is a very popular sport in countries like Spain, Argentina and Brazil, but there is a lack of scientific papers analyzing the harmfulness of their practice. Padel movements could potentially damage the foot and ankle joint. Therefore, the objective of this study was the characterization of the foot role during the execution of the most representative padel movements by techniques of pressurometry and video. The study was divided in two parts: pressurometric analysis of two movements (head-on displacement and split-step), and video recording of the foot during two games. The main conclusions of the study are the importance of forefoot zone in the padel movements, the importance of…

An Innovative Weightbearing Device for Weightbearing 3-Dimensional Imaging for Foot and Ankle Surgery Preoperative Planning.

2021

ABSTRACT Three-dimensional preoperative planning has demonstrated multiple surgical advantages. Currently, we cannot carry out preoperative 3-dimensional planning of foot and ankle orthopedics in most hospitals due to the impossibility of performing weightbearing CT imaging. Our objective is to describe and evaluate an innovative accessible, simple, and effective device that simulates standing while in a supine position, to obtain 3-dimensional images supporting bodyweight load with a conventional CT machine. From a group of 30 volunteers, 10 patients were randomly selected and pressure and its distribution were analyzed while in a standing position in both feet. Differences between both fe…

Gait variability observed in step duration is predictive of impending adverse health outcomes among apparently healthy older adults and could potentially be evaluated using wearable sensors (inertial measurement units, IMU). The purpose of the present study was to establish the reliability and concurrent validity of gait variability and complexity evaluated with a waist and an ankle-worn IMU. Seventeen women (age 74.8 (SD 44) years) and 10 men (73.7 (4.1) years) attended two laboratory measurement sessions a week apart. Their stride duration variability was concurrently evaluated based on a continuous 3 min walk using a force plate and a waist- and an ankle-worn IMU. Their gait complexity (…

Incidence and prevalence of injuries in futsal: A systematic review of the literature

2021

Futsal athletes are exposed to a high number of injures. Purpose: This study aimed to gather data on the injures produced in futsal, attending to the prevalence, part of the body injured, type of injury and mechanism, and severity. Also, to evaluate the influence that sociodemographic factors and the position on the pitch may have on the injuries. Finally, we pursued to summarize the prevention strategies proposed by the expert literature. Design: Different search strategies were entered in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Sport Discuss databases. Results: 36 articles were selected to be reviewed. Futsal is situated among the sports with the highest injury incidence, being the main body …
