New Permian tetrapod footprints and macroflora from Turkey (Çakraz Formation, northwestern Anatolia): biostratigraphic and palaeoenvironmental implic…
2011
9 pages; International audience; New tetrapod footprints belonging to the ichnogenus Hyloidichnus have been discovered in Turkey for the first time, in the lower part of the Çakraz Formation (Northwestern Anatolia) and together with macrofloral imprints of Annularia and Stigmaria. These discoveries confirm the Permian age of the fossiliferous red beds in which the coniferophyte Walchia was previously recorded. Based on the stratigraphic range of Annularia, Stigmaria and Hyloidichnus known elsewhere, a Cisuralian age is proposed for these beds. These new ichno- and macrofloral remains, together with the sedimentological data (mudcracks, rain drops) suggest the presence of captorhinid reptile…
Coastal Oceanic climate change and variability from 1982 to 2009 around South Africa
2010
Changes and fluctuations in sea surface temperature (SST) around the South African coast are analysed at a monthly scale from 1982 to 2009. There is a statistically significant negative trend of up to 0.5 °C per decade in the southern Benguela from January to August, and a cooling trend of lesser magnitude along the South Coast and in the Port Elizabeth/Port Alfred region from May to August. The cooling is due to an increase in upwelling-favourable south-easterly and easterly winds. There is a positive trend in SST of up to 0.55 °C per decade in most parts of the Agulhas Current system during all months of the year, except for KwaZulu-Natal where warming is in summer. The warming was attri…
Assembly of Spinach Chloroplast ATP Synthase Rotor Ring Protein-Lipid Complex
2019
Rotor ATPases are large multisubunit membrane protein complexes found in all kingdoms of life. The membrane parts of these ATPases include a ring-like assembly, so-called c-ring, consisting of several subunits c, plugged by a patch of phospholipids. In this report, we use a nature-inspired approach to model the assembly of the spinach (Spinacia oleracea) c14 ring protein-lipid complex, where partially assembled oligomers are pulled toward each other using a biasing potential. The resulting assemblies contain 23 to 26 encapsulated plug lipids, general position of which corresponds well to experimental maps. However, best fit to experimental data is achieved with 15 to 17 lipids inside the c-…

Ovarian sex cord tumor with annular tubules in a woman with premature ovarian failure.
2001
Abstract Objective: To report a case of premature ovarian failure (POF) associated with an ovarian sex cord tumor with annular tubules. Design: Case report. Setting: Reproductive endocrinology unit in a tertiary academic center. Patient(s): A 20-year-old woman with POF. Intervention(s): Biopsy of the rudimentary ovary by laparoscopy. Main Outcome Measure(s): Protocol for POF investigation and histological study of the ovarian sample. Result(s): An ovarian sex cord tumor with annular tubules was detected in the rudimentary right ovary. Conclusion(s): The rare ovarian sex cord tumor with annular tubules, which may be hormonally active, was detected in a case of POF.
Dimensionless Analysis Of Slurry Photocatalytic Reactors Using Two-Flux And Six-Flux Radiation Absorption-Scattering Models
2007
Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) over titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a "green" sustainable process for the treatment and purification of water and wastewater. However, the application of PCO for wastewater treatment on an industrial scale is currently hindered by a lack of simple mathematical models that can be readily applied to reactor design. Current models are either too simplistic or too rigorous to be useful in photocatalytic reactor design, scale-up, and optimization. In this paper a simple mathematical model is presented for slurry, annular, photocatalytic reactors that still retains the essential elements of a rigorous approach while providing simple solutions. The model extends the appli…

Anatomical and procedural features associated with aortic root rupture during balloon-expandable transcatheter aortic valve replacement
2013
Background— Aortic root rupture is a major concern with balloon-expandable transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). We sought to identify predictors of aortic root rupture during balloon-expandable TAVR by using multidetector computed tomography. Methods and Results— Thirty-one consecutive patients who experienced left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT)/annular/aortic contained/noncontained rupture during TAVR were collected from 16 centers. A caliper-matched sample of 31 consecutive patients without annular rupture, who underwent pre-TAVR multidetector computed tomography served as a control group. Multidetector computed tomography assessment included short- and long-axis diameters an…
On a class of singular measures satisfying a strong annular decay condition
2018
A metric measure space $(X,d,\mu)$ is said to satisfy the strong annular decay condition if there is a constant $C>0$ such that $$ \mu\big(B(x,R)\setminus B(x,r)\big)\leq C\, \frac{R-r}{R}\, \mu (B(x,R)) $$ for each $x\in X$ and all $0<r \leq R$. If $d_{\infty}$ is the distance induced by the $\infty$-norm in $\mathbb{R}^N$, we construct examples of singular measures $\mu$ on $\mathbb{R}^N$ such that $(\mathbb{R}^N, d_{\infty},\mu)$ satisfies the strong annular decay condition.
The annular decay property and capacity estimates for thin annuli
2016
We obtain upper and lower bounds for the nonlinear variational capacity of thin annuli in weighted $\mathbf{R}^n$ and in metric spaces, primarily under the assumptions of an annular decay property and a Poincar\'e inequality. In particular, if the measure has the $1$-annular decay property at $x_0$ and the metric space supports a pointwise $1$-Poincar\'e inequality at $x_0$, then the upper and lower bounds are comparable and we get a two-sided estimate for thin annuli centred at $x_0$, which generalizes the known estimate for the usual variational capacity in unweighted $\mathbf{R}^n$. Most of our estimates are sharp, which we show by supplying several key counterexamples. We also character…
