Numerical assessment of the thermal-hydraulic performances of the ITER Blanket cooling system
This thesis has covered the main research activities carried out during the candidate Ph.D. course of the XXXI Cycle on “Energia e Tecnologie dell’Informazione - curriculum Fisica Tecnica e Ingegneria Nucleare” (Energy and Information Technologies - Applied Physics and Nuclear Engineering curriculum), held at the University of Palermo, in the time frame that goes from the end of 2015 to the end of 2018. In particular, it focusses on the activities carried out at the DEIM in cooperation with the ITER Organisation on the “Hydraulic Analysis of Blanket Cooling System” and it has aimed to investigate the thermal-hydraulic behaviour of the ITER blanket cooling system under nominal steady-state c…

Early-design improvement of human reliability in an experimental facility: A combined approach and application on SPES
2019
Abstract SPES (Selective Production of Exotic Species) is a second-generation Isotope Separation On-Line (ISOL) facility for advanced nuclear physics applications, currently under construction at INFN (National Institute of Nuclear Physics) of Legnaro, Italy. Despite the potentially important safety implications of human errors for ISOL facilities, only a limited number of studies addressing this issue have been performed worldwide. This paper tries to address this need by means of an integrated approach of Hierarchical Task Analysis (HTA) and three human error quantification methods: HEART (in an enhanced version), SPAR-H, and CREAM. The application of multiple Human Reliability Analysis (…

Design and manufacturing feasibility of ITER TBM Frame and Dummy TBMs
2016
Abstract The operation and test of mock-ups of tritium breeding blankets relevant for a future commercial reactor is one of the goals of the ITER machine. To accomplish this goal, mock-ups of breeding blankets, called Test Blanket Modules (TBMs), are installed in three ITER equatorial ports. Each TBM and the associated shield form a TBM-set that is mechanically attached to a steel frame called TBM Frame. A Frame and two TBM-Sets form a TBM Port Plug (TBM PP). The ITER Organization is responsible for the design and manufacture of the TBM Frames and of the Dummy TBMs that could replace the TBM-sets in case they were not available. This paper describes the recent results of the design supporti…
