Interaction of a tropical cyclone with a high-amplitude, midlatitude wave pattern: Waviness analysis, trough deformation and track bifurcation

An idealized scenario of extratropical transition (ET) is investigated, in which a tropical cyclone interacts with a high-amplitude, upper-level wave pattern and well-developed surface cyclones. Early during the interaction, the external forcing of the upper-level wave by the ET system is quantified based on a metric for the waviness of the midlatitude flow. Local amplification of the wave pattern is diagnosed, associated prominently with the trough downstream of ET. This amplified trough, however, exhibits pronounced anticyclonic breaking and thus, in contrast to many previous ET studies, it is not clear that the amplification of the upper-level wave propagates into the farther downstream …

Abstract. Enhanced tropospheric trace gases such as CO, CH4 and H2O and reduced stratospheric O3 were measured in situ in the lowermost stratosphere over northern Europe on 26 September 2012 during the TACTS aircraft campaign. The measurements indicate that these air masses clearly differ from the stratospheric background. The calculation of 40-day backward trajectories with the trajectory module of the CLaMS model shows that these air masses are affected by the Asian monsoon anticyclone. Some air masses originate from the boundary layer in Southeast Asia/West Pacific and are rapidly lifted (1–2 days) within a typhoon up to the outer edge of the Asian monsoon anticyclone. From 27 July to 10 August 2017, the airborne StratoClim mission took place in Kathmandu, Nepal, where eight mission flights were conducted with the M-55 Geophysica up to altitudes of 20 km. New particle formation (NPF) was identified by the abundant presence of nucleation-mode aerosols, with particle diameters dp smaller than 15 nm, which were in-situ-detected by means of condensation nuclei (CN) counter techniques. Ozone mini-holes over Valencia (Spain) and their influence on the UV erythemal radiation

Low ozone level episodes (also known as mini-holes) have been analysed over Valencia, Spain, during the period from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2007. In this study, 24 episodes, lasting 1 or 2 days each, were detected. Most of them can be explained dynamically by the existence of an anticyclone over the Azores, which sends air masses coming from the Caribbean over the Iberian Peninsula. A positive anomaly in the vertical temperature profile in the high troposphere and one negative anomaly in the medium and low stratosphere are also observed in most of the analysed episodes. Abstract Idealized axisymmetric anomalies of potential vorticity (PV) on a midlatitude f plane and their related response in terms of balanced wind and temperature are investigated with special focus on the static stability in the tropopause region. Synoptic-scale variability of the polar and subpolar tropopause: Data analysis and idealized PV inversions

The synoptic-scale variability of the polar and subpolar tropopause is investigated based on radiosonde and European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis data in combination with idealized potential vorticity (PV) inversions. A regression analysis is performed to examine the relationship between the relative vorticity at tropopause level, the tropopause displacement, the static stability above the tropopause, and the anomalies of tropopause temperature and potential temperature. The relationship between sea-surface temperature (SST) inter-annual variability at the subtropical and midlatitudes of the southern Atlantic and Indian Oceans and its links with the atmospheric circulation in the Southern Hemisphere are investigated over the 1950–1999 period. Exploratory analysis using singular value decomposition and further investigations based on simple indices show that a large part of regional SST variability is common between the southwestern parts of both basins at subtropical and midlatitudes during the austral summer. Using a new automated scheme, synoptic mid-latitudes cyclone and anticyclone trajectories have been constructed over the North Pacific from daily sea level pressure (SLP) data, covering the period 1950-2001. Over the North-Eastern Pacific, the strength of anticyclones diminished and their frequency became more variable, while cyclones intensified and presented further southerly trajectories since the mid-1970s. Thus, cyclonic and anticyclonic activities are significantly anti-correlated. Connections of the West Pacific subtropical high and some hydroclimatic regimes in China with Antarctic ice-snow indices

On the basis of 10 years monthly and long-term annual data the importance of the antarctic ice-snow cover and correlated indices has been discussed. By computing time-lag correlation analyses of the ice-snow indices and different atmospheric indices of the northern hemisphere and some hydroclimatic regimes in China, it could be shown that a close relationship between sea-ice in the Antarctic and the intensity and area indices of the subtropical West Pacific high exists. It was also possible to prove a close relationship between antarctic ice-snow indices and the annual run-off of the Yellow River at Sanmenxia, and between rainfall over North China and the lower sections of the Yellow river.
