Abstract: In forming the canon of works that exemplify the debate on women in the fifteenth century, particularly in the Iberian Peninsula, there is often one text omitted. This work was composed by perhaps the most notorious figure in Spanish history: Alvaro de Luna. Although more commonly known as the king’s lifelong companion and privado, Luna was also the author of Libro de las claras e virtuosas mugeres . Among the auctoridades that Luna credits, he does mention one medieval writer as a source of inspiration: Giovanni Boccaccio. Presocratic discourse in poetry and prose: The case of Empedocles and Anaxagoras

Abstract This paper explores the differences between poetry and prose in philosophical writing by examining two Pre-Socratic fragments, one in verse and one in prose, that express a very similar thought: Empedocles 59 B 17 Diels/Kranz and Anaxagoras 31 B 8 D./K. Although at first it might seem as though there is a simple division between Empedocles’ opaque and allusive hexameters and Anaxagoras’ sober prose, when we look in detail at the language used by the two authors, a close reading of the passages reveals a more complex picture. In this paper I argue that there exist conventions of a peculiar sort which are neither norms nor regularities of behaviour, partaking of both. I proceed as follows. After a brief analysis of the meaning of ‘convention’, I give some examples of the kind of phenomena I have in mind: bodily skills, know-how, taste and style, habitus (P. Bourdieu), “disciplines” (M. Foucault). Then I group some arguments supporting my claim: (i) considerations about the identity conditions of precedents (D. Una part no menyspreable de les poesies de Ramon Llull va ser escrita per a afavorir la memorització dels fonaments conceptuals i operatius de l’Art. L’Art és una eina intel·lectual complexa i el seu creador era partidari de l’obscuritat didàctica. L’esforç que demana a l’usuari, d’altra banda, és indissociable de la pràctica de la primera intenció, que és conèixer i estimar Déu. És per això que les poesies creades per a aprendre l’Art i practicar-la poden semblar, a primera vista, un bon exemple de trobar clus.
