The challenge for school-based teacher educators : establishing teaching and supervision goals
2019
School-based teacher educators (SBTEs) should be able to set goals in two roles – as a teacher and as a supervisor of student teachers. The purpose of the study was to investigate school-based teacher educators’ teaching and supervising goals and to identify how teachers in the role of supervisors perceived university expectations. Thematic analysis indicated that teachers have difficulty establishing goals for themselves as teachers and supervisors. Their teaching goals proceeded from curricula and focused on their pupils’ cognitive development, whilst their perceptions about supporting pupils’ social development were vague. Teachers were unaware of what exactly universities expected of th…
Machine learning for a combined electroencephalographic anesthesia index to detect awareness under anesthesia
2020
Spontaneous electroencephalogram (EEG) and auditory evoked potentials (AEP) have been suggested to monitor the level of consciousness during anesthesia. As both signals reflect different neuronal pathways, a combination of parameters from both signals may provide broader information about the brain status during anesthesia. Appropriate parameter selection and combination to a single index is crucial to take advantage of this potential. The field of machine learning offers algorithms for both parameter selection and combination. In this study, several established machine learning approaches including a method for the selection of suitable signal parameters and classification algorithms are a…
Letter: Tissue-Glue-Coated Collagen Sponge (TachoSil) for Minor Cerebral Dural Venous Sinus Laceration: What is the Evidence?
2015
We read with great interest the article by Gazzeri et al1 focusing on tissue-glue–coated collagen sponge (TachoSil) application to repair minor cerebral dural sinus lacerations. In their series, 57 consecutive patients were prospectively enrolled, and tears of the cerebral venous sinus were treated by TachoSil application directly to the site of the bleeding. In all patients, venous bleeding was managed initially by standard techniques for hemostasis such as compression, application of oxidized cellulose, or gelatin sponge. TachoSil application was used when standard measures failed to be effective, were excessively time- consuming or inadequate, or were considered risky. No complications r…
[The role of the anesthesiologist in secondary hyperparathyroidism].
2010
In the last years the increasing of diabetes and hypertension has produced a considerable increase of patients with chronic renal failure; secondary hyperparathyroidism is one of the major complications. The resection of hyperfunctioning parathyroid tissue is the ultimate goal of the treatment. The preoperative examination by the anesthetist is the starting-point of the treatment. The anesthetist programs hemodialysis, the correction of fluid and electrolyte abnormalities and of the anaemia. In the operating room the anesthetist is involved in the careful monitoring of liquid infusion and anesthesiological procedure. The intraoperative parathyroid hormone (PTH) assay is an essential tool be…
The Many Faces of Turku : An Essayistic Study of Urban Travel
2020
What does it mean to take a photographic, imaginary, or fictional journey to some destination? How does indirect observation of the object differ from direct observation? What are they like, the immediate and the mediated Turku? Which of them is more real or more authentic? Turku is Finland’s most poetic city. It is also the most European of our cities. As the flâneur saunters along the banks of the River Aura, he traverses several centuries. The murmur of yesteryear is to be heard in the old buildings and in the foliage of the time-honoured trees. Here is the cradle, the first home of Finnish civilization. The philosopher-poet is able to see into the essence of a city: he has the patience …
The hidden face of expertise! Representations and descriptions of wines by different groups of experts in a vineyard in full evolution : the Beaujola…
2022
The Beaujolais vineyard is today in full evolution thanks to a policy of upgrading and moving upmarket. This evolution leads to the development of new mentions within the vineyard. This evolution impacts the Beaujolais wines but also the wine experts who are in the heart of making, selling and promoting these wines. Wine expertise has been studied extensively over the past twenty years. Most studies have focused on experts as a unified group versus novices to understand the effect of expertise on the knowledge and abilities of experts. However, it appears that within this unity, there are several types of experts with different backgrounds, knowledge, experiences, and professions: wine make…
2014
Laitila, M. ja Penttinen P. LUOKANOPETTAJAOPISKELIJOIDEN JA MATEMATIIKAN AINEENOPETTAJAOPISKELIJOIDEN KÄSITYKSIÄ MATEMATIIKAN OPETTAMISESTA. Jyväskylän yliopisto. Opettajankoulutuslaitos. Kasvatustieteen pro gradu-tutkielma. 75 sivua. Tutkimukseen osalli…
