An 18S rDNA-Based Molecular Phylogeny of Aphidiinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae)

We have obtained a molecular phylogeny of the subfamily Aphidiinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) by sequencing the 18S rDNA in 37 aphidiine taxa. Approximately 1857 nucleotides were sequenced in each species. Evolutionary relationships were established by comparing the results of maximum-parsimony, maximum-likelihood, and distance analyses. The most variable region of this gene, V4 (approx 403 nucleotides), was employed to establish the basality of the tribe Ephedrini within this subfamily. Evolution of the Secondary Symbiont “Candidatus Serratia symbiotica” in Aphid Species of the Subfamily Lachninae ▿†

ABSTRACT Buchnera aphidicola BCc, the primary endosymbiont of the aphid Cinara cedri (subfamily Lachninae), is losing its symbiotic capacity and might be replaced by the coresident “ Candidatus Serratia symbiotica.” Phylogenetic and morphological analyses within the subfamily Lachninae indicate two different “ Ca . Serratia symbiotica” lineages and support the longtime coevolution of both symbionts in C. cedri .

Molecular characterization of cyclic and obligate parthenogens in the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi (L.)

Holocyclic clones of the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) reproduce by cyclic parthenogenesis, whereas anholocyclic individuals are obligate parthenogens. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and random amplified polymorphic DNA markers in R . padi as well as plasmid DNA markers of its bacterial endosymbiont, Buchnera aphidicola , were examined to determine the extent of genetic divergence between clones with these differing breeding systems. These analyses revealed that cyclically parthenogenetic lineages possessed differing mtDNA and plasmid haplotypes than most obligately asexual clones. Aphids have a strong seasonal response, namely the development of a sexual morphs triggered by the shortening of photoperiod in autumn that produce an overwintering egg in which an embryonic diapause takes place. From this egg, an asexual parthenogenetic female emerges giving way to the asexual phase of the aphid life cycle in which several asexual generations occur. The influence of carrot seed oil and its main component carotol on development and behaviour of Aphis fabae aphids

The behaviour of some aphid species is influenced by different plant odours, especially by plant essential oils, which are the mixtures of terpenes. In our study, carrot seed oil and its main sesquiterpenic component - carotol - were examined as factors influencing the behaviour and development of Aphis fabae Scop. The results of the olfaction experiments showed, that especially carrot seed oil exhibited various activities in the dose-dependent manner. When tested in the amount which did not exceed 0.01 mL of 1% v/v of suspension in water, this substance exhibited strong attractancy toward adult females of Aphis fabae. Twenty-six species of ants associated with aphids, belonging to twelve genera, are collected. Three subfamilies are identified, being the Formicinae the more represented about number of samples, genera and species. Previously, we described some elements of the circadian clock core (genes period and timeless) and output (melatonin, AANATs and PTTH) that could have a role in the regulation of the aphid seasonal response. A genomic reappraisal of symbiotic function in the aphid/Buchnera symbiosis: reduced transporter sets and variable membrane organisations.

In this study, we reappraised the transport function of different Buchnera strains, from the aphids Acyrthosiphon pisum, Schizaphis graminum, Baizongia pistaciae and Cinara cedri, using the re-annotation of their transmembrane proteins coupled with an exploration of their metabolic networks.
