Bocángel?s Silva «El Retrato» : A Textual Trojan Horse?
2020
ABSTRACT: Gabriel Bocángel’s silva «El retrato» (c. 1638) is a textual Trojan horse in the war for poetic patronage in the early modern Spanish court. Written on the wedding of the poet’s cousin to Juan de Cetina, secretary to the Admiral of Castile, the poem is a verbal portrait of the bride that undermines not only the tradition of the descriptio puellae, but also the Count-Duke of Olivares’s power. As a panegyric of the latter’s enemy, the text employs the botanical images of the laurel and the ivy, exploiting the full sense of their symbolic meaning. As an appeal for the patronage of poetry and letters at court and an exercise in «self-fashioning» (Greenblatt), the text makes the lovers…
Las contiendas musicales de Apolo
2014
ABSTRACT: This article studies the contemporizing of the ethical and social connotations ascribed to string and wind instruments by the Grecolatin tradition that Hispanic Emblematics carried out in the 16th and 17th centuries. This is most evident in the depiction of the legend of Apollo in his respective musical competitions against Marsyas and Pan. This contemporizing of the legends allows us to perceive the political, social and religious dimensions that these musical contests acquire in the Hispanic World. KEYWORDS: Apollo, Marsyas, Pan, Midas, Cithern, Lyre, Aulos, Vihuela , Guitar.
The Epilogue in Doctor Faustus: The Petrarchan Context
2010
Metaphors used in Epilogue in Doctor Faustus, particularly the cut branch and Apollo‟s burned laurel bough, are indicative of Marlowe‟s intellectual involvement with Petrarch and the former‟s role in the literary circle centered on the Countess of Pembroke. His Latin epistle to Mary Sidney in Thomas Watson‟s Amyntas (1592) repeats similar metaphors, and the combination in the Epilogue of these images with that of the “forward wits” point both to Petrarch‟s Sonnet 269 (“Rotta l‟alta colonna e ‟l verde lauro”) and Sonnet 307 (“I‟ pensava assai destro esser sul l‟ale”). In fact, lines in the Epilogue are strongly evocative of some verses in Sonnet 307, where Petrarch ponders the theme of overr…
Bruce/apollon promotes hippocampal neuron survival and is downregulated by kainic acid
2005
Prolonged or excess stimulation of excitatory amino acid receptors leads to seizures and the induction of excitotoxic nerve cell injury. Kainic acid acting on glutamate receptors produces degeneration of vulnerable neurons in parts of the hippocampus and amygdala, but the exact mechanisms are not fully understood. We have here investigated whether the anti-apoptotic protein Bruce is involved in kainic acid-induced neurodegeneration. In the rat hippocampus and cortex, Bruce was exclusively expressed by neurons. The levels of Bruce were rapidly downregulated by kainic acid in hippocampal neurons as shown both in vivo and in cell culture. Caspase-3 was activated in neurons exhibiting low level…
I doni di Medea. Tra reciprocità e vendetta
2019
2018
The cult of Apollo Archeghetes, founded in Naxos by the oikist Teocle, was originally functional to strengthen the Ionian identity of the first colonial groups of the island, through the recall to the Apollo of Delos. Only later it was opened to all Greek people of Sicily, thus becoming the focus of the Sikeliote identity. A track of this "refunctionalization" can be seen in the news on the displacement of the Apollo Archeghetes altar outside the walls of Naxos, due perhaps to the reorganization of the urban planning made by Ieron.
