Po przedstawieniu swej interpretacji greckiej tragedii, w której współdziałają apollińskość i dionizyjskość, Nietzsche koncypował całościową teorię sztuki, w której zasadniczą rolę odgrywa wola mocy. Coraz bardziej pociągała go też idea architektury jako sztuki tworzonej z woli mocy i obejmującej najwyższe dążenia człowieka. Można przyjąć, że w przestrzeni architektonicznej apollińskość jest pięknem, a dionizyjskość jest wzniosłością. Oba żywioły dialektycznie syntetyzują się w postaci woli mocy będącej najpotężniejszą formą żywiołowości.
