A report on the clinical-pathological correlations of 788 gingival lesion

2017

Background The diagnosis and treatment of a variety of non-plaque related gingival diseases have become an integrated aspect of everyday dentistry. The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship between clinical appearance and histopathological features of gingival lesions in a large Northern Italian population. Material and Methods A retrospective study of 788 cases of gingival and alveolar mucosal biopsies was set up. Statistical analysis was performed by calculating the odds ratio and 95% confidence interval (C.I.), in order to assess the degree of association between the clinical parameters considered (primary lesions) and the single pathologies, statistically evaluated by Mantel…

Clinical presentation of burning mouth syndrome in patients with oral lichenoid disease

2020

Background To analyze the presence of burning mouth syndrome (BMS) in a group of patients diagnosed with oral lichenoid disease (OLD). Material and Methods A retrospective study of 217 patients diagnosed with OLD; 158 (72,8%) women and 59 (27,2%) men, with an average age upon diagnosis of 56,4 years (SD 11,88). We carried out a detailed and complete characterization of symptoms, with special emphasis on BMS diagnostic data specified by the International Headache Society. Results Four patients (1.8%) presented with long-term clinical symptoms of burning mouth, indicative of BMS and they fulfilled the IHS 2018 criteria, except for criterion D, i.e.“Oral mucosa is of normal appearance”. The ob…

Evaluation of the salivary function of patients in treatment with radiotherapy for head and neck cancer submitted to photobiomodulation

2020

Background Head and neck radiotherapy is typically associated with toxicities that can have profound effects on the patient's quality of life. Xerostomia, which may or may not be related to hypofunction of the salivary gland, leading to negative consequences, mainly in quality of life, leaving patients more susceptible to the development of oral mucositis, dental caries, oral infection and difficulties in speech is one of the most common side effects of such treatment. The aim of the present study was to evaluate salivary function of patients in treatment with radiotherapy for head and neck cancer submitted to photobiomodulation. Material and Methods A cross-sectional study with a quantitat…

Statistical Shape and Probability Prior Model for Automatic Prostate Segmentation

2011

International audience; Accurate prostate segmentation in Trans Rectal Ultra Sound (TRUS) images is an important step in different clinical applications. However, the development of computer aided automatic prostate segmentation in TRUS images is a challenging task due to low contrast, heterogeneous intensity distribution inside the prostate region, imaging artifacts like shadow, and speckle. Significant variations in prostate shape, size and contrast between the datasets pose further challenges to achieve an accurate segmentation. In this paper we propose to use graph cuts in a Bayesian framework for automatic initialization and propagate multiple mean parametric models derived from princi…

The Leonian Stage (early Middle Cambrian): a unit for Cambrian correlation in the Mediterranean subprovince

1999

The Leonian (early Middle Cambrian) regional Stage of Iberia is revised from a lithostratigraphic and biostratigraphic point of view in order to propose it as a chronostratigraphic unit for the Mediterranean subprovince (outcrops in Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Morocco and Turkey). This revision now permits a correlation of the Leonian Stage with the other early Middle Cambrian regional Stages. For this correlation the first appearance datum (FAD) of Eoparadoxides mureroensis, Macannaia spp., Schistocephalus antiquus and Oryctocara granulata are employed for the lower boundary; while the FADs of Badulesia tenera, Ctenocephalus (Hartella) spp., Parasolenopleura aculeata and Triplagnostus g…

Shining castles and humans of metal/floral appearance ? metaphorical language in the Palaiologan romances Kallimachos and Velthandros

2019

About eight centuries after Heliodorus, the Greek novel resurfaced in the twelfth century, in Komnenian Byzantium, and again two centuries later under the Palaiologan dynasty. This latter literary revival was due to the political stability of the imperial Byzantine government, which promoted cultural production, rhetorical education, and patronage networks. Kallimachos and Velthandros, two Palaiologan romances presented as court literature, combine ancient and medieval tropes with rhetorical artistry to blur the boundaries between the artificial and the natural. Castles and objects made of precious metals thus resemble living, natural spaces, and human characters are portrayed in metallurgi…

Geometric quality and appearance of surfaces : local and global approaches

2012

Accounting for customers' perception of manufactured goods has become a major challenge for the industry. This process is to be established from early design to retail. Customers are nowadays more aware and detail oriented about perceived quality of products. This allows one to set not only an estimated price but also the expected quality of the product. Surface appearance analysis has therefore become a key industrial issue. Two approaches are proposed here to formalize the detection methodology and provide objective criteria for experts to evaluate surface anomalies. The first proposed approach is based on surface metrology. It consists in analyzing the measured topologies in order to bin…

Quality of life following third molar removal under conscious sedation

2012

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess quality of life (QoL) and degree of satisfaction among outpatients subjected to surgical extraction of all four third molars under conscious sedation. A second objective was to describe the evolution of self-reported pain measured in a visual analogue scale (VAS) in the 7 days after extraction. Study design: Fifty patients received a questionnaire assessing social isolation, working isolation, eating and speaking ability, diet modifications, sleep impairment, changes in physical appearance, discomfort at suture removal and overall satisfaction at days 4 and 7 after surgery. Pain was recorded by patients on a 100-mm pain visual analogue scale (VAS) ev…

Long-standing oral ulcers: proposal for a new `S-C-D classification system’

2008

Persistent oral ulcers and erosions can be the final common manifestation, sometimes clinically indistinguishable, of a diverse spectrum of conditions ranging from traumatic lesions, infectious diseases, systemic and local immune-mediated lesions up to neoplasms. The process of making correct diagnosis for persistent oral ulcers still represents a challenge to clinicians. Major diagnostic criteria should include the clinical appearance of both ulcer and surrounding non-ulcerated mucosa, together with the evaluation of associated signs and symptoms, such as: number (single or multiple), shape, severity of the ulcer(s), conditions of remaining mucosa (white, red or with vesiculo-bullous lesio…

Predictors of enhancing human physical attractiveness: Data from 93 countries

2022

People across the world and throughout history have gone to great lengths to enhance their physical appearance. Evolutionary psychologists and ethologists have largely attempted to explain this phenomenon via mating preferences and strategies. Here, we test one of the most popular evolutionary hypotheses for beauty-enhancing behaviors, drawn from mating market and parasite stress perspectives, in a large cross-cultural sample. We also test hypotheses drawn from other influential and non-mutually exclusive theoretical frameworks, from biosocial role theory to a cultural media perspective. Survey data from 93,158 human participants across 93 countries provide evidence that behaviors such as a…
