Endomicroscopy of Small Bowel Diseases: Coeliac Disease, Lymphoma
2007
The different components making up the complement of immune elements within the alimentary tract vary greatly. In contrast to the Waldeyer’s ring region, the oesophagus and stomach are normally almost devoid of such immune apparatus, presumably because of the rapid transit of food and the chemically hostile environment for micro-organisms provided by salivary and gastric secretions. Only in pathological conditions, such as viral or fungal oesophageal infections, reflux oesophagitis or Helicobacter gastritis, does one encounter acquired mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue in these sites [1]. By contrast, the large and small bowel normally possess mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT), most …
Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms: An uncertain nosological entity. Report of a case
2016
Introduction: Appendiceal mucocele is a relatively rare condition characterized by progressive dilation of the appendix caused by intraluminal accumulation of mucoid substance. Its incidence is 0.07 - 0,63% of all appendectomies performed. Case report: We report the case of a 70-year-old man who came to our observation with gravative pain in right lower abdominal region. A computed tomography abdominal scan revealed a cystic/tubular structure like an appendicular mass with wall enhancement but without calcifications suggestive of a mucocele. Into peritoneal cavity we found profuse mucinous material with a 1,5 cm size parietal nodule. We also identified a free perforation of the cecum with c…
Acute appendicitis in a patient with situs viscerum inversus totalis: Role of laparoscopic approach. A case report and brief literature review
2020
Highlights • Abdominal pain due to acute appendicitis in one of the most causes of access to Emergency Room requiring surgical consult and treatment. • The occurrence of anatomical anomalies should be considered especially when clinical and imaging features are misleading. In these cases laparoscopic surgery can be a safe tool in order to confirm uncertain diagnosis. • We report a case of acute appendicitis in a 23-year-old Caucasian men with situs viscerum inversus detected on radiological investigation. • Laparoscopic approach was used to confirm the diagnosis and to perform appendectomy. Trocars placement was tailored for this peculiar case. • Situs viscerum inversus and midgut malrotati…
Enterobius vermicularis infestation of the appendix mimicking acute appendicitis in a young Italian boy Case report.
2021
Enterobius Vermicularis (EV) is the most commonly identified heminth incidentally found within the appendix of a clinically diagnosed appendicitis. This simple presence of EV may cause appendicular colic, primarily affecting children, it is an important cause of negative appendicectomy. We report a case of a young male who presented with clinical features of acute appendicitis. Laparoscopic appendicectomy was uneventful and pathologic examination revealed the presence of an EV infestation originating from the lumen of his vermiform appendix. KEY WORDS: Acute appendicitis, Diagnosis, Enterobius Vermicularis.L’Enterobius Vermicularis (EV) è il più frequente ossiuro identificato occasionalment…
Congenital cytomegalovirus related intestinal malrotation: a case report
2016
Background: Cytomegalovirus is the most common cause of congenital infection in the developed countries. Gastrointestinal involvement has been extensively described in both adult and paediatric immunocompromised patients but it is infrequent in congenital or perinatal CMV infection. Case presentation: We report on a case of coexistent congenital Cytomegalovirus infection with intestinal malrotation and positive intestinal Cytomegalovirus biopsy. At birth the neonate showed clinical and radiological evidence of intestinal obstruction. Meconium passed only after evacuative nursing procedures; stooling pattern was irregular; gastric residuals were bile-stained. Laparatomy revealed a complete i…
AMYAND’S HERNIA, AN UNKNOWN ENTITY THAT MAY CAUSE SURGEONS DIFFICULTY: OUR EXPERIENCE AND LITERATURE REVIEW
2021
The aim of this case report is to present an uncommon disease, Amyand’s hernia. It is an inguinal hernia containing the appendix in the hernial sac. Hermann Minkowski’s Cologne Lecture, “Raum und Zeit”
2018
A century ago, David Hilbert stepped to the podium at a special meeting of the Gottingen Academy of Sciences to recall the achievements of his close friend Hermann Minkowski. Just one month earlier, on 12 January 1909, the 43-year-old Minkowski had died unexpectedly after suffering a ruptured appendix, leaving those close to him in a state of shock. None was more deeply affected than Hilbert, whose memorial lecture (Hilbert 1910) reflects the deep sense of personal loss he felt at that time:
