Shape and dimensional accuracy in Single Point Incremental Forming: State of the art and future trends

2007

Abstract The paper is aimed to discuss some relevant issues concerning an innovative sheet metal forming technology, namely Single Point Incremental Forming. The advantages of this technology are addressed, including its capability to provide effective answers to some impellent industrial requirements: process flexibility, strong customer orientation, production of highly differentiated goods at low industrial costs. As well some relevant drawbacks are highlighted, mainly as concerns the level of accuracy permitted by the process. A wide recognition of the research efforts in this field is presented, taking into account some general considerations on the difference sources of shape and dime…

Optimization of the contact surface shape of a shrinkage fit

1998

Amongst many processes existing today for the assembly of two cylindrical parts, the shrinkage fit is commonly used. However, in the calculation methods, the contact surfaces are assumed to be perfect. Therefore, in order to apply these, the standards necessitate very small geometrical tolerances. The objective of the present paper is to show that it is possible to take into account form defects by closely conformed contact modelling and to have a good representation of reality: form defects always exist to an increasing extent and are inherent in all kinds of manufacturing processes. Finally, it is shown that the presence of defects can be beneficial, allowing optimization from both a mech…

Numerical and experimental verification of new method for connecting pipe to flange by cold forming

2015

Abstract In this paper a new method of connecting pipe to flange without welding is presented. This method is a cold forming process that is based on plastic expansion/deformation of the pipe into a modified standard flange by use of a cold forming tool. The method is patented by Quickflange Technology AS and represents a highly feasible alternative to welding. The successful use of the method requires the ability to predict dimensional and stress/strain characteristics of the pipe and flange after the connection process in order to evaluate the connectivity to the adjacent flange as well as the leak tightness. In addition the ability to predict the process force during the connection proce…

The evaluation of springback in 3D stamping and coining processes

1998

Abstract An effective predictive technique of the elastic springback in a fully 3D 90° V-punch V-die bending process is presented. This is based on a combined approach in which an explicit finite element code was used to simulate the loading phase of the process whilst an implicit procedure was used to analyse the springback phase. Two different punches with a nose radius of 4 and 8 mm were used. An increase in the springback ratio with the coining load was observed with the lower nose radius. Conversely, an increase in the springback ratio with the coining load up to a peak value (>1), corresponding to a force of about 20 kN, followed by a decrease in the springback ratio with increasing t…

Simulation approach for improving CNC milling machines accuracy for single axis motion

2010

CNC milling machines are widely used in manufacturing processes. In time, their accuracy is decreasing, which directly influences the accuracy of the manufactured parts. This research proposes a simulation-based method for improving the accuracy of the above mentioned machines, which is suitable to be applied at the shop floor level. A model of the feed drive, using a dc servomotor as actuator, is the core of the proposed approach. Matlab & Simulink based simulation diagrams were built in order to test the behavior of the system.

Optimized Topology for High Efficiency Battery Discharge Regulator

2008

In the following years power levels of 20 kW to 50 kW will be demanded by the telecommunication satellites. It is not possible to keep 0.5 kW modules with up to 100 modules in parallel and, therefore, higher power modules must be used. A higher bus voltage seems also necessary and any voltage below 150 V and above 100 V could meet the needs. In addition, new optimized topologies that process only a part of the total power delivery can be employed to improve the efficiency. In this article, design guidelines and experimental results of a high efficiency battery discharge regulator (BDR) module based on parallel power processing are given.

On the FSW of AA2024-T4 and AA7075-T6 T-joints: an industrial case study

2009

In this paper, the authors present the results of a wide experimental campaign on aeronautical T-shaped parts of industrial interest characterized by dissimilar materials for the skin and stringer. The friction stir welding process engineering was developed with the aim to determine the specific process parameters determining the soundness on the obtained T-parts both from the metallurgical and mechanical point of view. Furthermore, the performance of the obtained T-joints was investigated.

A Model for Capturing Product Assembly Information

2005

The important issue of mechanical assemblies has been a subject of intense research over the past several years. Most electromechanical products are assemblies of several components, for various technical as well as economic reasons. This paper provides an object-oriented definition of an assembly model called the Open Assembly Model (OAM) and defines an extension to the NIST Core Product Model (NIST-CPM). The assembly model represents the function, form, and behavior of the assembly and defines both a system level conceptual model and associated hierarchical relationships. The model provides a way for tolerance representation and propagation, kinematics representation, and engineering anal…

Autonomous patrol and surveillance system using unmanned aerial vehicles

2015

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly popular for civil applications due to their flight capabilities and mobility. This paper proposes an indoor autonomous patrol and surveillance system using unmanned aerial vehicles. The system consists of six components: (1) a low cost vision-based pose estimation of UAVs, (2) vision-based state estimation, (3) UAV patrol path planning, (4) UAV controller to desired waypoints, (5) manual joystick controller and (6) assignment of priority hierarchy to multiple control inputs of a robot. The components were integrated successfully and the designed system was experimented in an indoor setup. Results has shown that the proposed system is suitable…
