Classification of Heart Sounds Using Convolutional Neural Network

2020

Heart sounds play an important role in the diagnosis of cardiac conditions. Due to the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), it is problematic and time-consuming for experts to discriminate different kinds of heart sounds. Thus, objective classification of heart sounds is essential. In this study, we combined a conventional feature engineering method with deep learning algorithms to automatically classify normal and abnormal heart sounds. First, 497 features were extracted from eight domains. Then, we fed these features into the designed convolutional neural network (CNN), in which the fully connected layers that are usually used before the classification layer were replaced with a global averag…

More restrictive Gray codes for some classes of pattern avoiding permutations

2009

In a recent article [W.M.B. Dukes, M.F. Flanagan, T. Mansour, V. Vajnovszki, Combinatorial Gray codes for classes of pattern avoiding permutations, Theoret. Comput. Sci. 396 (2008) 35-49], Dukes, Flanagan, Mansour and Vajnovszki present Gray codes for several families of pattern avoiding permutations. In their Gray codes two consecutive objects differ in at most four or five positions, which is not optimal. In this paper, we present a unified construction in order to refine their results (or to find other Gray codes). In particular, we obtain more restrictive Gray codes for the two Wilf classes of Catalan permutations of length n; two consecutive objects differ in at most two or three posit…

Local electrical characterisation of human atrial fibrillation

2002

The rate of success of radio-frequency catheter ablation in the treatment of atrial fibrillation may be significantly improved by evaluating the local electrical properties of the atrial tissue. The aim of this study is the development of an automatic procedure for the characterisation of the local electrical activity during atrial fibrillation and the comparison of its performance with the manual analysis. The adopted procedures were the semi-automatic measurement of the local fibrillation intervals (A-A intervals) and the manual electrogram classification following the criteria suggested by Wells (1978) or Konings (1997). Two methods have been used: Principal Component Analysis and Cluste…

A symmetric Galerkin boundary/domain element method for finite elastic deformations

2000

Abstract The Symmetric Galerkin Boundary Element Method (SGBEM) is reformulated for problems of finite elasticity with hyperelastic material and incompressibility, using fundamental solutions related to a (fictitious) homogeneous isotropic and compressible linear elastic material. The proposed formulation contains, besides the standard boundary integrals, domain integrals which account for the problem's nonlinearities through some (fictitious) initial strain and stress fields required to satisfy appropriate “consistency” equations. The boundary/domain integral equation problem so obtained is shown to admit a stationarity principle (a consequence of the Hu-Washizu one), which covers a number…

Multi-frequency orthogonality sampling for inverse obstacle scattering problems

2011

We discuss a simple non-iterative method to reconstruct the support of a collection of obstacles from the measurements of far-field patterns of acoustic or electromagnetic waves corresponding to plane-wave incident fields with one or few incident directions at several frequencies. The method is a variant of the orthogonality sampling algorithm recently studied by Potthast (2010 Inverse Problems 26 074015). Our theoretical analysis of the algorithm relies on an asymptotic expansion of the far-field pattern of the scattered field as the size of the scatterers tends to zero with respect to the wavelength of the incident field that holds not only at a single frequency, but also across appropria…

Testing the X-IFU calibration requirements: an example for quantum efficiency and energy resolution

2018

With its array of 3840 Transition Edge Sensors (TESs) operated at 90 mK, the X-Ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) on board the ESA L2 mission Athena will provide spatially resolved high-resolution spectroscopy (2.5 eV FWHM up to 7 keV) over the 0.2 to 12 keV bandpass. The in-flight performance of the X-IFU will be strongly affected by the calibration of the instrument. Uncertainties in the knowledge of the overall system, from the filter transmission to the energy scale, may introduce systematic errors in the data, which could potentially compromise science objectives - notably those involving line characterisation e.g. turbulence velocity measurements - if not properly accounted for. Defining…

The performance of the ATHENA X-ray Integral Field Unit

2018

The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) is a next generation microcalorimeter planned for launch onboard the Athena observatory. Operating a matrix of 3840 superconducting Transition Edge Sensors at 90 mK, it will provide unprecedented spectro-imaging capabilities (2.5 eV resolution, for a field of view of 5') in the soft X-ray band (0.2 up to 12 keV), enabling breakthrough science. The definition of the instrument evolved along the phase A study and we present here an overview of its predicted performances and their modeling, illustrating how the design of the X-IFU meets its top-level scientific requirements. This article notably covers the energy resolution, count-rate capability, quantum …

Web-based real-time data acquisition system as tool for energy efficiency monitoring

2013

A web-based data acquisition system is proposed as a research tool of the energy efficiency monitoring project of the test stands. Basic requirements for the architecture of the data acquisition system are discussed. The architecture of the data acquisition system is proposed to provide the real-time interface with sensors, to acquire and to log data from all sensors with fixed rate, and to deliver logged data through FTP to the end-user.

Commercial and financial policies in family firms: The small business growth management flight simulator

2000

An interactive learning environment (ILE) was built to reproduce the budgeting process of a small family-owned entrepreneurial firm and to capture how current decisions affect business growth in a longer time horizon. The ILE matches the accounting-related perspective through which spreadsheet-based budgets are drawn up, with the system dynamics (SD) view. Such a goal has been pursued through a connection of traditional Excel spreadsheets with POWERSIM SD models. Playing the SMALL BUSINESS GROWTH MANAGEMENT FLIGHT SIMULATOR allows one to learn how (a) to draw up a budget based on an SD perspective, (b) long-term goals may be affected by current decisions, (c) business/family survival and gr…
