Mobility Fee—Creating Better Cities, Creating a Better Future!
2021
The following paper explores an alternative to financing public transportation in densely populated urban areas through ticket sales as a possible incentive to increase the usage of public transportation with the intent of reducing car traffic and pollution in urban spaces. It addresses the option of collecting a “mobility fee” from residents of an area to replace the revenue generated by ticket sales. Since the fee as it is envisioned in this paper would be collected from residents regardless of whether they actually use public transportation, this method would result in the usage of public transportation itself not being associated with any additional monetary cost. The text elaborates on…

Managing Risk in Financial Market in Shipping Industry
2011
Based on the knowledge from shipping we would like to study one option strategy for investments on shipping stocks. Since the term paper is relatively short we have chosen one market segment, namely the offshore market, and one shipping company, namely Farstad Shipping. We will use the theory of freight rates from Martin Stopford`s book, Maritime economics, and apply it to the real world. The reason for this is that the freight rates are the income for the shipping companies. Furthermore we will use the financial information from Farstad Shipping to see what the value of Farstad Shipping stocks should be in the future. This we will do based on the freight rates in the offshore market. The m…
Voluntary agreements in protecting privately owned forests in Finland — To buy or to lease?
2008
Abstract A voluntary conservation approach may reveal environmentally minded landowners who are willing to protect their lands with a compensation that is lower than the market price based compensation. Consequently, voluntary conservation programs may induce lower costs than traditional obligatory programs, such as a land taking. We compared the costs accrued from land purchasing with those from temporal land leasing. The costs included both direct costs, such as fees of land acquisition and compensation payments in land leasing, and transaction costs. We used a data set from a Finnish pilot program called Trading in Natural Values (TNV). In this new practice landowners and the authority t…
Events and Trends Control in Diagnostics of Financial Capacity of Transportation Companies
2013
Investigating the impact rendered by financial capacity and its diagnostics efficiency upon the results of a company’s activity is the most important problem of modern management. The standard conventional methods and tools of the financial analysis have remained in the past. The top management of a modern company ever more often reflects on the alternative approaches for an assessment objectively capable of reflecting both the current situation and the near-term threats jeopardizing the company’s activity. One of such approaches is the business value appraisal method from the time perspective. The advantage of this approach is leading properties inherent in the indices. This article studie…

Future directions in international financial integration research - A crowdsourced perspective
2018
This paper is the result of a crowdsourced effort to surface perspectives on the present and future direction of international finance. The authors are researchers in financial economics who attended the INFINITI 2017 conference in the University of Valencia in June 2017 and who participated in the crowdsourcing via the Overleaf platform. This paper highlights the actual state of scientific knowledge in a multitude of fields in finance and proposes different directions for future research.
Performance of Fine-Tuning Convolutional Neural Networks for HEp-2 Image Classification
2020
The search for anti-nucleus antibodies (ANA) represents a fundamental step in the diagnosis of autoimmune diseases. The test considered the gold standard for ANA research is indirect immunofluorescence (IIF). The best substrate for ANA detection is provided by Human Epithelial type 2 (HEp-2) cells. The first phase of HEp-2 type image analysis involves the classification of fluorescence intensity in the positive/negative classes. However, the analysis of IIF images is difficult to perform and particularly dependent on the experience of the immunologist. For this reason, the interest of the scientific community in finding relevant technological solutions to the problem has been high. Deep lea…
Finite element method on fractional visco-elastic frames
2016
Viscoelastic behavior is defined by fractional operators.Quasi static FEM analysis of frames with fractional constitutive law is performed.FEM solution is decoupled into a set of fractional Kelvin Voigt elements.Proposed approach could be easily integrated in existing FEM codes. In this study the Finite Element Method (FEM) on viscoelastic frames is presented. It is assumed that the Creep function of the constituent material is of power law type, as a consequence the local constitutive law is ruled by fractional operators. The Euler Bernoulli beam and the FEM for the frames are introduced. It is shown that the whole system is ruled by a set of coupled fractional differential equations. In q…
Strategies for Heading Off is Project Failure
2000
Although investment in information technology and information systems continues to increase, projects continue to fail. As a result, IS projects, particularly software projects, are perceived as high risk. By categorizing types of risk, this article helps IS professionals and all project sponsors to identify classes of risk and choose the appropriate managerial behavior to mitigate each of them.
