Some topological properties of the Inverse Lens Mapping

Away from critical curves, lens mapping can be seen as a linear invertible transformation of the plane even for regions (cells) of relatively large size. However, close to critical curves the departures from linearity can be very strong. We discuss the topological problems induced by the mapping of regions of the image plane that include critical curves (critical cells).

Comparison of LIBS and micro-XRF measurements on bronze alloys for monitoring plasma effects

The laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique is often used as atomic spectroscopic technique for elemental analysis of materials. However, it presents some drawbacks that make an accurate quantitative analysis difficult. Since the plasma properties, such as spatial inhomogeneity and plume stoichiometry strongly depend on the experimental conditions, the measurements are less reproducible. In order to evaluate the measurement fluctuations, we propose to use the more established micro X-Ray fluorescence (μ-XRF) technique for validating LIBS data. Although Modern Physics (MP) is a scientific field of increasingly interest, due to its mathematical and conceptual difficulty, it was not generally taught in Italian high-schools. Recently, in order to reduce the gap between school curricula and modern technology, the Ministry of Education promoted the inclusion of MP in Italian secondary schools. Group theory aspects of chaotic strings

Chaotic strings are a special type of non-hyperbolic coupled map lattices, exhibiting a rich structure of complex dynamical phenomena with a surprising correspondence to physical contents. Chaotic strings are generated by the Chebyshev maps T2() and T3(). In this paper we connect the Chebyshev maps via the Galois theory to the cyclic groups Z2 and Z3 and give some ideas how this fundamental connection might lead to the emergence of the familiar Lie group structure of particle physics and, finally, even to the emergence of space-time. Dry deposition models for radionuclides dispersed in air: a new approach for deposition velocity evaluation schema

In the framework of a National Research Program funded by the Italian Minister of Economic Development, the Department of Energy, Information Engineering and Mathematical Models (DEIM) of Palermo University and ENEA Research Centre of Bologna, Italy is performing several research activities to study physical models and mathematical approaches aimed at investigating dry deposition mechanisms of radioactive pollutants. Low-temperature microwave response of heavy-fermion compounds

2009

The electrodynamic properties of heavy fermions are distinct from those of normal metals due to the reduced transport relaxation rate that goes hand in hand with the enhanced mass. Using broadband microwave spectroscopy on thin-film samples of the heavy-fermion materials UPd2Al3 and UNi2Al3, we find that the frequency-dependent conductivity of these compounds at low temperatures follows a simple Drude prediction. The observed relaxation rates in the GHz frequency range are extremely low for a metal.

On the thermal instability in a horizontal rectangular porous channel heated from below by a constant flux

Experimental investigation of two-side heat transfer in spacer-filled channels

Abstract In Membrane Distillation (MD), spacers support the membranes and promote mixing, thus reducing temperature polarization. Their efficient design requires a knowledge of the distribution of the local heat transfer coefficient h and of its dependence on Reynolds number, spacer geometry and flow-spacer relative orientation.
