First experiments with gasdynamic ion source in CW mode.

2016

A new type of ECR ion source—a gasdynamic ECR ion source—has been recently developed at the Institute of Applied Physics. The main advantages of such device are extremely high ion beam current with a current density up to 600–700 emA/cm2 in combination with low emittance, i.e., normalized RMS emittance below 0.1 π mm mrad. Previous investigations were carried out in pulsed operation with 37.5 or 75 GHz gyrotron radiation with power up to 100 kW at SMIS 37 experimental facility. The present work demonstrates the first experience of operating the gasdynamic ECR ion source in CW mode. A test bench of SMIS 24 facility has been developed at IAP RAS. 24 GHz radiation of CW gyrotron was used for p…

ECRIS plasma spectroscopy with a high resolution spectrometer

2020

Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (ECRIS) plasmas contain high-energy electrons and highly charged ions implying that only noninvasive methods such as optical emission spectroscopy are reliable in their characterization. A high-resolution spectrometer (10 pm FWHM at 632 nm) enabling the detection of weak emission lines has been developed at University of Jyväskylä, Department of Physics (JYFL) for this purpose. Diagnostics results probing the densities of ions, neutral atoms, and the temperature of the cold electron population in the JYFL 14 GHz ECRIS are described. For example, it has been observed that the cold electron temperature drops from 40 eV to 20 eV when the extraction volta…

The effect of microwave power on the Ar9+ and Ar13+ optical emission intensities and ion beam currents in ECRIS

2018

The production of Ar9+ and Ar13+ ions in an ECRIS plasma and the efficiency of the ion beam extraction and transport of the resulting Ar9+ and Ar13+ ion beams have been studied with the JYFL 14 GHz ECRIS by using optical emission spectroscopy and measurement of the m/q analyzed beam currents. The relative changes in both the optical emission and the ion beam current in CW mode as function of microwave power and in amplitude modulation (AM) operation mode are reported. The results indicate a discrepancy between the parametric dependence of high charge state ion densities in the core plasma and their extracted beam currents. The observation implies that in CW mode the ion currents could be li…

Imaging Topological Spin Structures Using Light-Polarization and Magnetic Microscopy

2020

We present an imaging modality that enables detection of magnetic moments and their resulting stray magnetic fields. We use wide-field magnetic imaging that employs a diamond-based magnetometer and has combined magneto-optic detection (e.g. magneto-optic Kerr effect) capabilities. We employ such an instrument to image magnetic (stripe) domains in multilayered ferromagnetic structures.

Hardening of Steel Perforated Tape by Nd:YAG Laser

2016

One of the directions of application of the perforated metal material is their use as cutting elements in the production of processing tools. In this case it is necessary to carry out hardening of cutting surfaces to increase their hardness. One of the methods of hardening metals could be laser treatment. Therefore, the present work is a study of the effect of Nd:YAG laser radiation on the microstructure and hardness of fragments formed from steel perforated tape. Different laser scan speeds (doses) were used in the experiments. The results have shown that the increase the microhardness of 30-40% after the laser treatment of steel perforated tape in the surface layer in a depth range up to …

Structural analysis of W3O/WO3 and TiO/TiO2 periodic multilayer thin films sputter deposited by the reactive gas pulsing process

2012

International audience; DC reactive sputtering was used to deposit titanium and tungsten-based metal/oxide periodic nanometric multilayers using pure metallic targets and Ar + O-2 gas mixture as reactive atmosphere. The innovative technique namely, the reactive gas pulsing process allows switching between the metal and oxide to prepare a periodic multilayered structure with various metalloid concentrations and nanometric dimensions. The same pulsing period was used for each deposition to produce metal-oxide periodic alternations close to 10 nm. Structure, crystallinity and chemical composition of these films were systematically investigated by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and Energ…

Processing conditions, microstructure and mechanical properties of hetero-nanostructured ODS FeAl alloys produced by spark plasma sintering

2013

International audience; Spark plasma sintering (SPS) has been used to sinter a milled oxide dispersion-strengthened (ODS) FeAl powder in order to prepare dense nanostructured parts. The effect of processing conditions including sintering temperature, holding time and degassing treatments on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-sintered materials was investigated. A hetero-nanostructure that contains nano, ultrafine and micrometric grains was confirmed to be developed whatever the processing window, due to the large temperature difference generated during the SPS process itself. The grain size distribution can be tailored by selecting a combination of sintering temperature …

Geometrical dependence of domain wall propagation and nucleation fields in magnetic domain wall sensor devices

2017

We study the key domain wall properties in segmented nanowires loop-based structures used in domain wall based sensors. The two reasons for device failure, namely the distribution of domain wall propagation field (depinning) and the nucleation field are determined with Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect (MOKE) and Giant Magnetoresistance (GMR) measurements for thousands of elements to obtain significant statistics. Single layers of Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$, a complete GMR stack with Co$_{90}$Fe$_{10}$/Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ as a free layer and a single layer of Co$_{90}$Fe$_{10}$ are deposited and industrially patterned to determine the influence of the shape anisotropy, the magnetocrystalline anisotropy an…
