Precision Medicine in Oncology: Glossary of Relevant Scientific Terms
2021
The conventional oncological approach was defined in the past as “one size fits all” and the tumors were treated according to the localization and the histopathological features. One of the future challenges in the field of oncology is the integration of translational research and technology innovation, in order to clarify unexplored aspects of the biology and the genetics of tumors, to develop a personalized treatment based on the molecular characteristics of the patient and his disease, that is the principle of precision medicine. New multidisciplinary teams are needed to ensure the integration of different professional profiles, including oncologists, pharmacologists, geneticians, and pa…
Has pharmaceutical research become more scientific?
1996
Pharmaceutical research continues to be highly empirical, despite some recent writings arguing that it has become more scientific. Contrary to a study asserting that Mevacor, Tagamet, and Capoten demonstrate the success of targeted research, these drugs were discovered only after many years of following leads. Two hypotheses implied by the proposition that pharmaceutical research has become more scientific are tested. The first hypothesis is that the uncertainty of research has fallen. The second is that the number of publications by scientists in the industry has increased. Both are rejected.
Just more of the same, or different? An integrative theoretical framework for the study of cumulative interruptions at work
2014
We propose a theoretical framework that explores the accumulation of work interruptions and their effects. Most research studies have dealt with interruptions as isolated phenomena, ignoring the simultaneous or sequential occurrence of interruptions common in everyday life. We fill this gap and provide insight into the process of the accumulation of interruptions by mapping deep-level regulation onto an observable sequence of actions. Furthermore, we explain how cumulative interruptions can lead to qualitatively different effects because of the interaction and joint development of isolated effects, identifying some mediating and moderating factors. In doing so, we disclose the relationships…
Review article: future research on coeliac disease - a position report from the European multistakeholder platform on coeliac disease (CDEUSSA)
2008
BACKGROUND: CDEUSSA is a Specific Support Action project from the Sixth Framework Programme Priority of the European Union (EU). Its aim is to bring together basic and applied research in the area of coeliac disease (CD). This paper reviews the main issues that are a result of the CDEUSSA initiative. AIM: To identify the major issues in need of investigation in the areas of clinical aspects, treatment, prevention and public health. METHODS: Key stakeholders, representing a wide range of knowledge with crucial importance for CD research and practice, have participated in two workshops aimed at identifying and proposing to the EU, as high priority research, topics in the areas of clinical asp…
The Rhetoric and Relevance of IS Research Paradigms: Conceptual Foundations and Empirical Evidence
2006
This paper discusses the relevance of IS research with respect to the rhetoric associated with the three major IS research paradigms in use - positivism, constructivism/interpretivism and critical research. The conceptual discussion is framed in terms of the following dimensions: ontological, epistemological and methodological assumptions, relationship between theory and practice, and the role of the researcher in the research process. Based on this discussion, we propose a conceptual model to study the relationship between the espoused philosophical assumptions of researchers and the degree of relevance of researchers’ knowledge claims. This conceptual model was evaluated with data obtaine…
Heuristics and Memory Strategies Used by Mathematicians
1996
The study of the cognitive processes involved in learning and acquisition of technically complex material is a main focus of interest for basic and applied research. Our research program tries to identh memory aids and heuristic training strategies useful for improving mathematics performance. Part of the effectiveness of a course, designed by taking into account knowledge about the cognitive system, has to do with the development of an adequate relationship with the belief system of the learner. As a first step in that direction, we present a survey of the opinions of a group of mathematicians about the dd€iculty of their subjecr matter, the strategies they use spontaneously to overcome di…
Eduardo Primo Yúfera, founder of Revista de Agroquímica y Tecnología de Alimentos and pioneer on food science and technology research in Spain.
2011
Eduardo Primo Yúfera was the founder and director of the Instituto de Agroquímica y Tecnología de Alimentos (IATA, 1957-1974) until he was appointed president of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC). His aim to publicize food science led him to create the Revista de Agroquímica y Tecnología de Alimentos in 1961, the forerunner of this journal, Food Science and Technology International, which he directed until 1977. Of his scientific output, 50% has been published in this journal. He is considered to be the promoter and exponent of Food Science and Technology and Chemical Ecology in Spain as well as the instigator of the country's innovation model (R&D and innovati…
Bayesian Design of “Successful” Replications
2002
Replication of experiments is commonin applied research. However, systematic studies of the goals and motivations of a “replication” are rare. As a consequence, there does not seem to be a precise notion of what a “success” when replicating means. This article discusses some of the possible goals for replication; this leads to different (but precise) notions of “success” when replicating. Bayesian hierarchical models allow for a flexible and explicit incorporation of the assumed relationship among the experiments. Bayesian predictive distributions are a natural tool to compute the probability of the replication being successful, and hence to design the replication so that the probability of…
Towards new paradigms in tourism fields: an anthropological perspective
2018
The present notes of research centres on the problem of fragmentation, which is experienced by tourism applied research in the recent years. Echoing the original claims issued by John Tribe –followed by many others scholars–, we discuss further on the socio-economic factors that prevented tourism its maturated and stylised form. Though we introduce a materialist viewpoint, echoing David Harvey, no less true is that the point is open to further debate, incorporating cultural viewpoints. The impulses and bursts of interest received simultaneously from social science but also by the theory of scientifisation coined by Jafar Jafari did not suffice to gain purchase over a maturated discipline. E…
Ecosistema emprendedor de la Universidad de València
2018
