Student Partners in Task Design in a computer medium to promote Foundation students' learning of mathematics

2018

International audience; A team consisting of three mathematics education teacher-researchers, four former Foundation students (called Student Partners, SPs), and two analytic assistants worked together to produce mathematical tasks in a computer medium for the mathematical learning of current Foundation students (FSs). We have explored the collaboration between the SPs and researchers, the processes and outcomes of task design, and the contribution of the collaboration to tutorial teaching of FSs. We seek insight into the learning of all concerned of mathematics, mathematics teaching, task design and personal-professional development. The project is ongoing. Here we introduce the project an…

Building collective capabilities through ICT in a mountain region of Nepal: where social capital leads to collective action

2012

In this paper, we explore how ICT can lead to development specifically human development in Sen's capability approach. In answering to the critique that Sen views capabilities as the individual, we incorporate the societal level by adding collective capabilities. We propose that ICT helps to create or enhance SC of communities which in turn can lead to development by building collective capabilities through collective action. To illustrate, we conducted a qualitative case study of an ICT initiative in a remote mountain region of Nepal. We found support for our proposition and further that developing collective capabilities also simultaneously enhanced individual capabilities. We contribute …

Postnatal Neurogenesis and Neuronal Regeneration

2004

The discovery of neurogenesis in the adult brain has challenged one of the central dogmas of neuroscience. Pioneer reports in rodents seed the ground for a detailed description in birds and reptiles, which was finally confirmed in discrete regions of several mammalian species including humans. This neurogenetical capability may serve as the basis for neuronal regeneration, as has already been described in the reptilian brain, and thus may represent a promising therapeutic approach. Consequently, in the last years there has been an important effort to deepen our knowledge of the biology, the functional significance and the regulation of adult neurogenesis.

"Public Governance of Cultural Heritage". Using the institution of Trust to recover the degraded cultural assets owned by a Municipality

In Italy, the cultural heritage care has always been charged primarily to the State or,more generally, to the Public Sector, especially in the light of its natural aptitude to pursue general interests. However, nowadays the primacy of the public actors (first and foremost the Municipalities, viewed more and more as main actors in charge for the care of cultural heritage), risks being questioned by increasingly stringent budgetary constraints. The latter have been compromising the capability to guarantee a fair and widespread protection and to make the cultural heritage available to the community, as witnessed by the progressive accumulation of degraded or abandoned cultural heritage over ti…

Epistemic and didactic values of the demonstrative process in different cultures: a case study in Geometry with Chinese and Italian students

2011

This paper presents same key findings of the research project conducted by G.R.I.M. of Palermo on the approaches to justification and proof in Geometry by investigating how Chinese and Italian teachers and students taught particular geometrical topics refereed to different epistemic and didactic values related to own culture. It was found that Chinese teachers and students emphasized justification of the proof by a stressed visual verification based on some metarules linked with the structure of their own written language and defined as historical Chinese modus operandi in the Jiuzhang Suanshu. The Italians paid close attention to mathematical proof by a hypoxemic deductive system defined on the Euclide’ Elements. The geometrical problem discussed on the paper was defined and presented as “one problem multiple solution problems” and “one problem multiple changes”. Important aspect of the case study discussed in the paper focus on the mediation of knowledge between Chinese and Italian students involved in multicultural class. According to us these kind of activities can establish possibilities for the students to confront their self with different cultural social and educational prospective of knowledge discovering the power of mathematics as tool of negotiation in multicultural class?Settore MAT/04 - Matematiche Complementari

Three-dimensional analysis of load transfer micro-mechanisms in fibre/matrix composites

2009

International audience; This study gives a detailed analysis of load distributions around fibre breaks in a composite. In contrast to other studies reported in the literature, the analysis considers different configurations of composite damage from the failure of a few to the failure of many fibres. The model considers three types of matrix behaviours (elastic, elastic–plastic and viscoelastic) with or without debonding at the broken fibre/matrix interface. In this way, the usual limitations of the finite element approach are overcome so as to take into account the number and interactions of broken fibres whilst maintaining an evaluation of the various fields (stresses in particular).

A Teaching Experience: Aeroelasticity and the Finite Element Method

2015

[EN] The aeroelastic modelling of aircraft structures is a fundamental area for the students of Aerospace Engineering Degree. This subject has a strongly multidisciplinary character and involves other several subjects like mechanics, vibrations, aerodynamics, structural analysis. Consequently, the students find stimulating the challenge of merging their knowledge at different areas. In this paper, a teaching experience on the solution of the aeroelastic problem of a 3D-wing through six different computer tasks is presented. The main objective is to attempt a relatively complex problem using a simple version of the Finite Element Method with only four degrees of freedom. The students begin c…

Current-Based Measurement Technique for High Sensitivity Detection of Resistive Bridges With External Balancing Through Control Voltages

2017

We present a novel approach based on differential measurements of dc currents with very high sensitivity suitable for the detection of very small variations of resistors in Wheatstone full-bridge configurations. External control voltages allow for the compensation of the bridge unbalancing avoiding the need of changing its elements so making the solution suitable for integrated sensor systems. The proposed current-based measurement technique has been implemented through three different circuits, in transimpedance configuration and without the use of any further amplification stage, employing only two active blocks that allow for a very high integration level. The main characteristics of the…
