PROGETTARE LO SPAZIO INTERCULTURALE. Approccio multi-scalare nel quartiere Albergheria a Palermo / DESIGNING INTERCULTURAL SPACE. A multi-scalar appr…

2020

Migration has always been a major driver of urban transformation stimulating opportunities and challenges for cities and encouraging architectural and urban designers for taking a proactive and dynamic role in responding to the crisis. Enhancing these changes, and designing intercultural spaces for local communities, is a complex and urgent spatial challenge, that should be addressed by a multi-scalar approach aiming to integrate urban, architectural and public spaces. This paper illustrates a research-action resulting from a collective work developed on key urban spaces of the Albergheria neighborhood of Palermo, where a design-led research based on a multiscalar regeneration approach (urb…

La colaboración científica: principales líneas de investigación y retos de futuro

2014

The construction of knowledge is a collaborative process that has seen a dramatic growth over recent decades, since almost all research activities now involve increasing numbers of researchers, institutions, disciplines and countries. The present study provides a bibliographic review of the literature on research collaboration and identifies pioneering work on the topic, the types of studies undertaken and the variables analyzed. Several approaches are discussed: the “classical” approach, based on bibliometric indicators, which has taken on a new dimension with Social Network Analysis; and quantitative and qualitative approaches, which attempt to investigate the motivations and dynamics of …

Justice in and to nature : an application of the broad framework of environmental and ecological justice

2017

This dissertation applies and develops the broad framework of environmental and ecological justice. It is a new relational approach to justice, whose elements have been introduced by David Schlosberg in his works on environmental and ecological justice. The present study provides a systematisation of the framework and applies it to contemporary environmental topics using the methods of conceptual analysis and case-implication critique. The main outcome of this study is that the elements comprising the broad framework of environmental and ecological justice provide fresh and useful insights into topics like species extinctions and ecosystem wellbeing. In particular, the holistic and conflict…

The Circularity of MSW in Urban Landscapes: An Evaluation Method for a Sustainable System Implementation

2022

The debate on the sustainable perspective of a circular economy and MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) management is no longer focused on the resolution of an emergency and on the pure technicality of creating efficient services. New light has been shed on the operational phase, as often unresolvable technical-environmental issues during service management lead to a state of decay, affecting urban vulnerability and users’ involvement. The research aims to develop an auxiliary tool for public administrations in planning a zero-waste future whilst enhancing the urban landscape. This study considers the perspective of virtuous management of the resource flow cycle along with evaluating implementable …

INSTITUTIONALISATION OF RETURN MIGRATION IN LATVIA: THE CASE OF REGIONAL COORDINATORS

2021

Emigration countries such as Latvia institutionally should address the negative consequences of the ageing populations' economic and demographic challenges. To this aim, in 2018 network of five regional return migration coordinators was established to foster and nationally encourage return migration. The primary function of the regional coordinator is to foster and facilitate requests of potential return migrants.Drawing on interview materials collected in 2020 with return migration coordinators at the regional level – Latgale, Vidzeme, Zemgale, Kurzeme and Riga, we illustrate good-practice of return migration institutionalisation in Latvia. Our study focuses on three main fields of interest…

Homophobic bullying and preventive actions at school: from laws to gender studies in Italy

2019

The evolution of thought relating to sexual orientation and the greater visibility of gay and lesbian people, at media level also, haven’t been efficient for the revisiting of homosexual rendering from public acceptance and for a cultural transformation. The violent events on young homosexual students urge to reflect on the need that trainers should introduce educational models capable of providing different models of gender identification, fighting the stereotype that tries to substitute the reality itself. The homophobic bullying is intended as a fight to safety and well-being of young students. A multi-disciplinary and network approach seems to be for health practitioners a valid startin…

Physical Activity-Related Profiles of Female Sixth-Graders Regarding Motivational Psychosocial Variables: A Cluster Analysis Within the CReActivity P…

2020

IntroductionAdolescents’ physical activity (PA) behavior can be driven by several psychosocial determinants at the same time. Most analyses use a variable-based approach that examines relations between PA-related determinants and PA behavior on the between-person level. Using this approach, possible coexistences of different psychosocial determinants within one person cannot be examined. Therefore, by applying a person-oriented approach, this study examined (a) which profiles regarding PA-related psychosocial variables typically occur in female sixth-graders, (b) if these profiles deliver a self-consistent picture according to theoretical assumptions, and (c) if the profiles contribute to t…

Comparing male and female students’ self-efficacy and self-regulation skills in two undergraduate mathematics course contexts

2018

International audience; Students' efficacy beliefs have a positive influence on students' academic achievement and retention, especially for female students. These beliefs are closely linked to students' ability to regulate their learning. In this quantitative study, students' self-efficacy and self-regulation of learning are compared in two university mathematics courses that differ in content but also in their pedagogical setting: one is a more traditional lecture-based course, and the other course is taught with the Extreme Apprenticeship (XA) method. The analysis is based on the same cohort of students in the two contexts (N=91). The results suggest that students have higher self-effica…
