The community conserved landscape of the Borana Oromo, Ethiopia
2011
Purpose - This paper seeks to describe an attempt to assess at the local level the progress that has been internationally achieved in recognition of community and indigenous rights, and of indigenous and community conserved areas. An action-research exercise was implemented in Ethiopia with a mobile indigenous people of evaluating customary as well as government-led governance of the environment, with the objective of strengthening the capacity of the Borana-Oromo to conserve their landscape. Design/methodology/approach - This paper is based on collaborative research implemented by the authors in 2002 while SOS Sahel Ethiopia was introducing collaborative forest management, and on a 2007 ac…

Long-Term Consequences of Water Pumping on the Ecosystem Functioning of Lake Sekšu, Latvia
2020
Cultural eutrophication, the process by which pollution due to human activity speeds up natural eutrophication, is a widespread and consequential issue. Here, we present the 85-year history of a small, initially Lobelia&ndash
Idiosyncratic description of anger states in skilled Spanish karate athletes: an application of the IZOF model
2004
This study examined content and intensity of anger prior to, during, and after best ever and worst ever performances in 43 high-level Spanish karate athletes using individualized anger profiling. Optimal and dysfunctional anger intensities were assessed using a modified version of Borg’s Category Ratio (CR-10) scale. Anger profiling was supplemented with positive and negative emotion profiling. As expected, content of anger descriptors was highly idiosyncratic. Moreover, great variability in optimal and dysfunctional anger intensities was found at individual and group levels. In best performances, anger was related to the generation of additional energy, whereas in worst performances, anger…

Identity and Value of Public Space: Multifaceted and Multicultural Points of View
2022
Low Complexity Image Compression using Pruned 8-point DCT Approximation in Wireless Visual Sensor Networks
2017
International audience; Since the transmission of the uncompressed image in the context of wireless visual sensor networks (WVSNs) consumes less energy than transmitting the compressed image, developing energy-aware compression algorithms are mandatory to extend the camera node's lifetime and thereby the whole network lifetime. The present paper studies a low-complexity image compression algorithm in the context of WVSNs. This algorithm consists of applying a pruning approach on a DCT approximation transform. The scheme is investigated in terms of computation cycles, processing time, energy consumption and image quality. Experimental works are conducted using the Atmel Atmega128 processor o…
