Multiple imputation of rainfall missing data in the Iberian Mediterranean context
2017
Abstract Given the increasing need for complete rainfall data networks, in recent years have been proposed diverse methods for filling gaps in observed precipitation series, progressively more advanced that traditional approaches to overcome the problem. The present study has consisted in validate 10 methods (6 linear, 2 non-linear and 2 hybrid) that allow multiple imputation, i.e., fill at the same time missing data of multiple incomplete series in a dense network of neighboring stations. These were applied for daily and monthly rainfall in two sectors in the Jucar River Basin Authority (east Iberian Peninsula), which is characterized by a high spatial irregularity and difficulty of rainfa…
High-to-low (Regional) fertility transitions in a peripheral european country: The contribution of exploratory time series analysis
2021
Diachronic variations in demographic rates have frequently reflected social transformations and a (more or less evident) impact of sequential economic downturns. By assessing changes over time in Total Fertility Rate (TFR) at the regional scale in Italy, our study investigates the long-term transition (1952–2019) characteristic of Mediterranean fertility, showing a continuous decline of births since the late 1970s and marked disparities between high- and low-fertility regions along the latitude gradient. Together with a rapid decline in the country TFR, the spatiotemporal evolution of regional fertility in Italy—illustrated through an exploratory time series statistical approach—outlines th…
Mapping traditional cultural landscapes in the Mediterranean area using a combined multidisciplinary approach: Method and application to Mount Etna (…
2011
Traditional cultural landscapes (TCLs) are prominent in Mediterranean countries. The abundance of this landscape type, however, is not reflected by broad-scale inventories and mapping tools. The aim of this paper is to highlight the need for a multidisciplinary approach to landscape analysis, with special reference to the Mediterranean area. We propose an integrated method that combines deductive and inductive processes to define and map TCLs in a study area (Mount Etna, Sicily, Italy). We also develop a procedure to characterize the primary components of these landscapes as a reference to be used in cultural-landscape descriptions. For mapping purposes, three different scales of analysis w…
Proactive and reactive dimensions of life-course agency: mapping student teachers’ language learning experiences
2014
Although the concept of agency has received a lot of interest in recent educational research, its significance in language learning biographies as well as contextual and relational aspects of learner agency are still little studied. This paper aims at a more thorough understanding of agency by studying student teachers’ previous language learning experiences. This paper is based on a dialogical analysis of 12 student teachers’ biographical essays describing their relationship with English as a foreign language. The participants are students in a Finnish class teacher and language teacher education programme that uses English as the primary medium of instruction. The study proposes a tripart…
Akute Gefäßerkrankungen in der Gastroenterologie. Der Gastroenterologe - Acute gastroenterologic vascular diseases
2012
Acute gastroenterologic vascular emergencies are common situations in emergency departments and the clinical consequences range from trivial to life-threatening. Only the early recognition of these symptom patterns and prompt use of the appropriate diagnostic tools lead to a correct diagnosis with subsequent potentially life-saving treatment. To decrease the high mortality rate of acute mesenteric ischemia (50%), aorto-enteric fistula (30–40%), visceral artery aneurysms (10– 100%) and Budd-Chiari syndrome new strategies with an endovascular approach are gaining importance and are partially replacing established diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms. This article provides a review of the dia…
Boundary discretization based on the residual energy using the SGBEM
2007
Abstract The paper has as objective the estimation of the error in the structural analysis performed by using the displacement approach of the Symmetric Galerkin Boundary Element Method (SGBEM) and suggests a strategy able to reduce this error through an appropriate change of the boundary discretization. The body, characterized by a domain Ω and a boundary Γ−, is embedded inside a complementary unlimited domain Ω∞⧹Ω bounded by a boundary Γ+. In such new condition it is possible to perform a separate valuation of the strain energies in the two subdomains through the computation of the work, defined generalized, obtained as the product among nodal and weighted quantities on the actual boundar…
Gentrifizierung in periurbanen Räumen Frankreichs: Am Beispiel des Umlandes von Nancy
2019
One Health Approach to Zoonotic Parasites: Molecular Detection of Intestinal Protozoans in an Urban Population of Norway Rats, Rattus norvegicus, in …
2021
Rattus norvegicus, the brown or Norway rat, is the most abundant mammal after humans in urban areas, where they live in close proximity to people. Among rodent-borne diseases, the reservoir role of Norway rats of zoonotic parasites in cities has practically been ignored. Considering the parasitic diseases in the One Health approach, we intended to identify and quantify the zoonotic intestinal protozoans (ZIP) in an urban population of R. norvegicus in the city of Barcelona, Spain. We studied the presence of ZIP in 100 rats trapped in parks (n = 15) as well as in the city’s sewage system (n = 85) in the winter of 2016/17. The protozoans were molecularly identified by means of a multiplex PCR…
Effect of sequential inoculum of beta-glucosidase positive and probiotic strains on brine fermentation to obtain low salt sicilian table olives
2019
In the present study, the β-glucosidase positive strain Lactobacillus plantarum F3. 3 was used as starter during the fermentation of Sicilian table olives (Nocellara Etnea cultivar) at two different salt concentrations (5 and 8%), in order to accelerate the debittering process. The latter was monitored through the increase of hydroxytyrosol compound. In addition, the potential probiotic Lactobacillus paracasei N24 strain was added after 60 days of fermentation. Un-inoculated brine samples at 5 and 8% of salt were used as control. The fermentation was monitored till 120 days through physico-chemical and microbiological analyses. In addition, volatile organic compounds and sensorial analyses …
Le problème du réalisme des hypothèses en économie politique
2010
This is a version, slightly corrected in 2010 with regard to form, of a working paper produced in 1968. Its subject is the problem of the realism of assumptions in economics. It offers an interpretation of Milton Friedman's famous essay of 1953 in which, contrary to most discussions, Friedman's solution to the problem does make sense. Under that interpretation, Friedman does not assert that one should test the consequences of a theory but not its assumptions, that one can predict but not explain, or that individuals behave as if they were rational and firms as if they maximized profits. Such assertions do not make sense and ascribing them to Friedman makes criticism of his position much too…
