Establishing Usability for Interactive Music Applications that Use Embodied Mediation Technology
2009
This paper proposes a research method to address usability issues in the early stage of development of interactive or collaborative embodied music applications. The central topic is how concepts of usability testing, goal composition, game enjoyment and technology assessment can be actively incorporated in the development and improvement of music applications that use embodied mediation technology. The method presented involves discourse analysis of interviews to develop an approach to constructively use the feedback of test persons to enhance interactive music applications. This analysis is used to determine whether users can properly interact with the system, whether they understand it an…
Sepsis, miocardiopatía e infección por el virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana: a propósito de un caso
2014
Sepsis in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may be associated with the appearance of cardiac dysfunction. This is a challenge, both when making the differential diagnosis and determining the proper treatment, as there are numerous risk factors: Myocarditis due to the HIV itself, the presence or absence of highly active antiretroviral therapy, toxic substances, and cardiomyopathy associated with sepsis. The diagnostic and therapeutic approach to an HIV positive patient with septic shock and cardiac dysfunction is described, as well as a brief review of the different causes of cardiomyopathy which may affect this group of patients is also presented.
A direct comparison of 2D versus 3D diffusion analysis at nanowire electrodes: A finite element analysis and experimental study
2022
In electroanalysis, the benefits accrued by miniaturisation are a key driver in sensor development. Finite element simulations of electrochemical processes occurring at ultramicro- and nano-electrodes are used to provide key insight into experimental design in relation to diffusion profiles and expected currents. The most commonly used method, the diffusion domain approach (DDA) offers a means of reducing a three dimensional design to two dimensions to ease computational demands. However, the DDA approach can be limited when using basic assumptions which can be incorrect, for example that all electrodes in an array are equivalent. Consequently, to get a more realistic view of molecular diff…
Data Backup Dilemma
2016
When the Great East Japan Earthquake struck in 2011, several municipalities lost their residential data including backup. Since none of them had ever considered the total loss of data, data backup policy had been paid little attention. In many cases, the backup tapes were simply stored inside the server room, just beside the server rack. Following the calamity, the Japanese national government tried to introduce a data backup system to municipalities using the cloud. The purpose was to secure the safekeeping of backup data. However, municipalities were reluctant to go along with this since overcoming the loss of network connectivity during an earthquake remained foremost in their minds. The…
Economic Theory and its History
2016
This collection of essays is a tribute to Neri Salvadori, the man and scholar, teacher and friend, whom the scientific community owes important works in the tradition of Piero Sraffa’s revival of the classical economists’ approach to the problems of value, income distribution, capital accumulation, technical progress, scarce natural resources, economic development and growth. The essays in this book have all been freshly written and contain original work with novel ideas in the areas mentioned.
Injections of Particulate Steroids for Nerve Root Blockade: Ultrastructural Examination of Complicating Factors
2014
Selective nerve root block by a transforaminal approach with radiological control allows injection of an appropriate corticosteroid next to the nerve root, although it has been associated with major neurological complications in a few cases. There have been several reports in which corticosteroid injections performed at the level of the cervical or lumbar spine have led to severe spinal cord ischemic infarction. These have occurred independently of whether the procedure was performed under radiological control, in which the tip of the needle is identified to prevent vascular spreading of the solution injected.
REACHING NET ZERO ENERGY: OVERCOMING CLIMATE CHALLENGES WITH A ‘SOLUTION SETS’ DESIGN APPROACH
2013
The paper proposes an innovative energy performances evaluation and design approach, developed during the II° Ph.D. IEA Task 40 Summer School. The aim of the work is to check the importance of a ‘design with climate’ approach in understanding how much climate conditions can influence the design choices. The idea is to focus on the technical and architectural solutions that have the highest impact on the overall energy performances of the building in its original climate, then to move it to a completely different location, re-evaluating the energy performances of the building, in connection to the new site challenges. The last step is a re-design study in order to achieve the best performanc…
The effects of computer-based mindfulness training on Self-control and Mindfulness within Ambulatorily assessed network Systems across Health-related…
2016
Background Self-control is an important ability in everyday life, showing associations with health-related outcomes. The aim of the Self-control and Mindfulness within Ambulatorily assessed network Systems across Health-related domains (SMASH) study is twofold: first, the effectiveness of a computer-based mindfulness training will be evaluated in a randomized controlled trial. Second, the SMASH study implements a novel network approach in order to investigate complex temporal interdependencies of self-control networks across several domains. Methods The SMASH study is a two-armed, 6-week, non-blinded randomized controlled trial that combines seven weekly laboratory meetings and 40 days of e…
Individual baseline behavioral traits predict the resilience phenotype after chronic social defeat
2021
Abstract Chronic social defeat (CSD) has been widely used as a psychosocial stress model in mice, with the magnitude of CSD-induced social avoidance as the major behavioral hallmark of the resilient and susceptible groups. Despite significant progress in the study of the neurobiology of resilient and susceptible mice, the nature and ethological relevance of CSD-induced social avoidance and social approach, particularly measured using a CD1 mouse, needs conceptual clarification. Based on the findings of a recent study revealing substantial individuality in genetically homogeneous inbred mice, we investigated whether certain baseline individual characteristics of male C57BL/6J mice predict th…
Disconnected Graph Layout and the Polyomino Packing Approach
2002
Conference name: GD: International Symposium on Graph Drawing 9th International Symposium Date of Conference: 23–26 September 2001 We review existing algorithms and present a new approach for layout of disconnected graphs. The new approach is based on polyomino representation of components as opposed to rectangles. The parameters of our algorithm and their influence on the drawings produced as well as a variation of the algorithm for multiple pages are discussed. We also analyze our algorithm both theoretically and experimentally and compare it with the existing ones. The new approach produces much more compact and uniform drawings than previous methods. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg …
