Poverty as failed exercise of rights? Some theoretical problems
2007
A state of deprivation can be epitomised as a situation that implies not only a lack of resources but even a failed exercise of individual rights. Sometimes, if we consider poor exclusively those who have not enough money we may miss part of the picture or we may pursue inefficient and/or unjust policies. Let us think of handicapped persons that have a certain income; this sum may be enough for healthy people, but it is not the case for those who are not self-sufficient. Thus, we may have people poor and people not poor with the same amount of resources. Poverty, then, must be considered not as a lack of resources but as the difficulty of enjoying relevant opportunities (e.g. reading, writi…
A Sociocultural Approach to Children’s Visual Creations
2021
AbstractThis chapter locates the book within the research on children’s art. It explores interpretations of children’s visual creations throughout the twentieth century and situates the approach of the book within the research landscape. The authors take developmental psychological, educational, and aesthetic approaches to form a sociocultural view of children’s art, challenging many of the previous research assumptions. Through adopting the paradigm of the sociocultural approach, the authors embrace its view of children as competent cultural actors and active participants in cultural production. Thus, the discussion focuses on meaning-making: the authors analyze visual artifacts made by st…
Pluriversalizar los regímenes globales de conocimiento: ¿Puede el Análisis del Discurso sociológico contribuir a estudios Decoloniales?
2020
In this paper we discuss the perspective of Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourse (SKAD) as a possible strategy applicable to studies framed by decolonial thought. The reflection is approached by comparing key concepts of both perspectives, such as discourse, power and knowledge, as well as their methodological premises. The results allow us to point out potentials of SKAD as a conceptual-methodological reference for investigations towards decoloniality, e.g. the SKAD analysis dimensions patterns of interpretation and narrative structure. However, possible limitations of the SKAD with respect to the design and the realization of decolonial studies were also revealed, particularly in …
Approximate Bayesian Computation for Forecasting in Hydrological models
2018
Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) is a statistical tool for handling parameter inference in a range of challenging statistical problems, mostly characterized by an intractable likelihood function. In this paper, we focus on the application of ABC to hydrological models, not as a tool for parametric inference, but as a mechanism for generating probabilistic forecasts. This mechanism is referred as Approximate Bayesian Forecasting (ABF). The abcd water balance model is applied to a case study on Aipe river basin in Columbia to demonstrate the applicability of ABF. The predictivity of the ABF is compared with the predictivity of the MCMC algorithm. The results show that the ABF method as …
Urticaria in Pediatrics and During Pregnancy and Lactation: Highlights on Epidemiology, Diagnosis, and Management
2021
Chronic urticaria (CU) in children as in adults is characterized by the presence of itchy wheals, angioedema, or both daily or almost daily for at least 6 weeks. Most cases of urticaria in the pediatric age group are acute [1–4]. CU is sub-classified as spontaneous (occurring without a known trigger) or inducible. There are also cases of spontaneous and inducible forms that co-exist. The chronic subtypes occur continuously but also recurrently, often in association with infections. In this chapter we will touch briefly on the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of acute urticaria in children. However, our primary goal is to highlight key findings regarding the epidemiology, dia…
Prenatal diagnosis of cerebral malformation with an uncertain prognosis: a study concerning couple's information and consequences on pregnancy.
2004
Abstract Fetal ultrasound (FU) is used during almost all pregnancies and makes a large contribution to the identification of fetal malformation. It is particularly difficult to announce a malformation, particularly those affecting the brain, because there are often doubts concerning both the diagnosis and the prognosis. Aim. – The aim of this study was to analyze how imaging for prenatal screening is organized and how couples are managed and supported. We concentrated on the procedures used to inform couples: content, method of delivery and consequences. Method. –: Study amongst large multidisciplinary centers in Paris and the Paris region, by semi-directed interviews using a questionnaire.…
Damage Indices and Photogrammetry for Decay Assessment of Stone-Built Cultural Heritage: The Case Study of the San Domenico Church Main Entrance Port…
2020
In recent decades, increasing attention is being paid to the multidisciplinary approach that allows the performance of both a preventive conservation and a more invasive restoration action. In this context, the present study aims to acquire information and data from field surveys undertaken in San Domenico Church, Southern Calabria, in order to provide a tool for the recording and the inventory of damage and decay phenomena, and assess their causes and scale. The subsequent calculation of damage indices also provided useful information in order to allow the prioritization of conservation and preservation responses.
An Importance-Performance Matrix Analysis of the Factors Influencing US Tourists to Use Airbnb
2019
After 10 years of Airbnb and its significant growth, this research is conducted to identify which factors really matter to Airbnb users today. It provides an integrated approach, since it aggregates factors that other studies have considered separately. With a sample of 101 US respondents, the partial least squares structural equation modelling results evidence that the only factors that influence future intentions to use Airbnb are its unique and varied accommodations and satisfaction. Enjoyment was also found to have a positive effect on Satisfaction. The study further investigates these factors with an Importance Performance map, providing guidance for the prioritization of managerial ac…

The purpose of the study reported here was to elucidate how home nursing leaders experience the administration of care to older people in transition from hospital to their own homes. Methods: A qual…
Educators and activists: educating for life through work in work integration enterprises
2018
