Zn(II) and Ni(II) complexes with poly-histidyl peptides derived from a snake venom

2018

Abstract The snake venoms are complex mixtures containing many bioactive peptides and proteins; some of them are aimed to protect the snake glands, where the venom is stored, until the latter is inoculated in the victim. In the venom of some vipers of the genus Atheris , a set of peptides containing poly-His and poly-Gly segments was recently found. Poly-His peptides are not rare in Nature. Although their exact biological function is most often unknown, one thing is certain: they have good binding properties towards the transition metal ions. As a matter of fact, the imidazole side chain of histidine is one of the groups most frequently involved in metal complexation in the active sites of …

Dismantling and electrochemical copper recovery from Waste Printed Circuit Boards in H2SO4–CuSO4–NaCl solutions

2019

Abstract The worldwide growing of electrical and electronic equipment makes increasingly urgent to find environmentally friendly treatments for e-waste. In this paper, the attention has been focused on i) the eco-friendly dismantling of the electronic components from Waste Printed Circuit Boards and ii) recovering of pure metallic copper, which is the most abundant metal and one of the most valuable in Printed Circuit Boards. After an experimental optimization study, we found that a solution containing 0.5 M H2SO4, 0.4 M CuSO4, and 4 M NaCl can be successfully used to disassemble the electronic components from the boards by leaching of all exposed metals. Air was blown into the leaching sol…

One-step electrodeposition of superhydrophobic coating on 316L stainless steel

2021

Superhydrophobic coatings were fabricated through a one-step electrochemical process onto the surface of 316L stainless steel samples. The presence of hierarchical structures at micro/nanoscale and manganese stearate into the coatings gave superhydrophobicity to the coating, with contact angle of ~160°, and self-cleaning ability. Corrosion resistance of 316L samples was also assessed also after the electrodeposition process through Electrochemical Impedance Spectra recorded in an aqueous solution mimicking seawater condition.

Ultrasonic cavitation induced water in vegetable oil emulsion droplets--a simple and easy technique to synthesize manganese zinc ferrite nanocrystals…

2012

In the present investigation, synthesis of manganese zinc ferrite (Mn(0.5)Zn(0.5)Fe(2)O(4)) nanoparticles with narrow size distribution have been prepared using ultrasound assisted emulsion (consisting of rapeseed oil as an oil phase and aqueous solution of Mn(2+), Zn(2+) and Fe(2+) acetates) and evaporation processes. The as-prepared ferrite was nanocrystalline. In order to remove the small amount of oil present on the surface of the ferrite, it was subjected to heat treatment at 300 °C for 3h. Both the as-prepared and heat treated ferrites have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), TGA/DTA, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersion X…

Hybrid Particle-Field Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Charged Amphiphiles in an Aqueous Environment.

2018

We develop and test specific coarse-grained models for charged amphiphilic systems such as palmitoyloleoylphosphatidylglycerol (POPG) lipid bilayer and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant in an aqueous environment, to verify the ability of the hybrid particle-field method to provide a realistic description of polyelectrolytes. According to the hybrid approach, the intramolecular interactions are treated by a standard molecular Hamiltonian, and the nonelectrostatic intermolecular forces are described by density fields. Electrostatics is introduced as an additional external field obtained by a modified particle-mesh Ewald procedure, as recently proposed [Zhu et al. Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys.…

Molecular Ruby under Pressure

2018

The intensely luminescent chromium(III) complexes [Cr(ddpd)2 ]3+ and [Cr(H2 tpda)2 ]3+ show surprising pressure-induced red shifts of up to -15 cm-1  kbar-1 for their sharp spin-flip emission bands (ddpd=N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-dipyridine-2-yl-pyridine-2,6-diamine; H2 tpda=2,6-bis(2-pyridylamino)pyridine). These shifts surpass that of the established standard, ruby Al2 O3 :Cr3+ , by a factor of 20. Beyond the common application in the crystalline state, the very high quantum yield of [Cr(ddpd)2 ]3+ enables optical pressure sensing in aqueous and methanolic solution. These unique features of the molecular rubies [Cr(ddpd)2 ]3+ and [Cr(H2 tpda)2 ]3+ pave the way for highly sensitive optical pressu…

Numerical and experimental investigation of short Au nanorods

2014

The plasmonic properties of Au nanorods (NRs) have been investigated theoretically and experimentally, a system that is of high current interest in relation to various nanophotonics applications. The non-aligned NRs arrays were formed by a seed-mediated growth method that relies on the reduction of metal salt by a weak reduction agent in the presence of preformed metallic seed nanoparticles. We applied the finite-element method to calculations of absorption spectra from gold NRs supported in an aqueous solution. Comparison to experimentally measured spectra is found in a good agreement.

Highly water-soluble magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles for drug delivery: enhanced in vitro therapeutic efficacy of doxorubicin and MION conj…

2013

We report a simple one step protocol for the preparation of fairly monodisperse and highly water-soluble magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MIONs) through a co-precipitation method using a novel multifunctional, biocompatible and water-soluble polymer ligand dodecanethiol–polymethacrylic acid (DDT–PMAA). DDT–PMAA owing to its several intrinsic properties, not only efficiently controls the size of the MIONs but also gives them excellent water solubility, long time stability against aggregation and oxidation, biocompatibility and multifunctional surface rich in thioether and carboxylic acid groups. The molecular weight and concentration of the polymer ligand were optimized to produce ultrasma…

Synthesis and Characterization of Nanostructured Cobalt Hexacyanoferrate

2010

Cobalt hexacyanoferrate (CoHCF) nanoparticles have been synthesized by mixing aqueous solutions of K3Fe(CN)6 and CoCl2 under vigorous stirring at different temperatures and following two different procedures, drop-by-drop or immediate mixing. The resulting CoHCF nanoparticles, with dimensions of several tens of nanometers, were characterized using TEM, SEM-EDX, IR, and XRD. Their electrochemical behavior was investigated in comparison with the CoHCF powder bulk compound. The CoHCF nanoparticles exhibit an electrochemically driven conversion to the bulk one that has been investigated by a chemometric approach in order to establish the best synthetic parameters. The rate and the degree of con…
