A parallel splitting up method and its application to Navier-Stokes equations
1991
A parallel splitting-up method (or the so called alternating-direction method) is proposed in this paper. The method not only reduces the original linear and nonlinear problems into a series of one dimensional linear problems, but also enables us to compute all these one dimensional linear problems by parallel processors. Applications of the method to linear parabolic problem, steady state and nonsteady state Navier-Stokes problems are given. peerReviewed
Regenerative 40 Gbit/s wavelength converter based on similariton generation.
2005
International audience; We present an all-optical regeneration technique based on spectral filtering of self-similar parabolic pulses (similaritons). In particular, we demonstrate numerically and experimentally that ghost pulses, which occur in the zero bit slots of telecommunication pulse trains, can be effectively suppressed. These results are obtained with a 40 Gbit/s pulse train.
Guaranteed lower bounds for cost functionals of time-periodic parabolic optimization problems
2019
In this paper, a new technique is shown for deriving computable, guaranteed lower bounds of functional type (minorants) for two different cost functionals subject to a parabolic time-periodic boundary value problem. Together with previous results on upper bounds (majorants) for one of the cost functionals, both minorants and majorants lead to two-sided estimates of functional type for the optimal control problem. Both upper and lower bounds are derived for the second new cost functional subject to the same parabolic PDE-constraints, but where the target is a desired gradient. The time-periodic optimal control problems are discretized by the multiharmonic finite element method leading to lar…
Exergetic and exergoeconomic analysis of a novel hybrid solar-geothermal polygeneration system producing energy and water
2016
Abstract A dynamic simulation model of a novel solar–geothermal polygeneration system and the related exergetic and exergoeconomic analyses are presented in this paper. The plant is designed in order to supply electrical, thermal and cooling energy and fresh water for a small community, connected to a district heating and cooling network. The hybrid system is equipped with an Organic Rankine Cycle fueled by medium-enthalpy geothermal energy and by a Parabolic Trough Collector solar field. Geothermal brine is also used for space heating and cooling purposes. Finally, geothermal fluid supplies heat to a Multi-Effect Distillation unit, producing also desalinized water from seawater. Dynamic si…
Il recupero del "paesaggio culturale" della Favara
2015

Analysis of a Parabolic Cross-Diffusion Semiconductor Model with Electron-Hole Scattering
2007
The global-in-time existence of non-negative solutions to a parabolic strongly coupled system with mixed Dirichlet–Neumann boundary conditions is shown. The system describes the time evolution of the electron and hole densities in a semiconductor when electron-hole scattering is taken into account. The parabolic equations are coupled to the Poisson equation for the electrostatic potential. Written in the quasi-Fermi potential variables, the diffusion matrix of the parabolic system contains strong cross-diffusion terms and is only positive semi-definite such that the problem is formally of degenerate type. The existence proof is based on the study of a fully discretized version of the system…
A PDE model for the spatial dynamics of a voles population structured in age
2020
Abstract We prove existence and stability of entropy weak solutions for a macroscopic PDE model for the spatial dynamics of a population of voles structured in age. The model consists of a scalar PDE depending on time, t , age, a , and space x = ( x 1 , x 2 ) , supplemented with a non-local boundary condition at a = 0 . The flux is linear with constant coefficient in the age direction but contains a non-local term in the space directions. Also, the equation contains a term of second order in the space variables only. Existence of solutions is established by compensated compactness, see Panov (2009), and we prove stability by a doubling of variables type argument.
Some observations on metal cutting with reference to the mechanical characteristics of working materials
1972
The hypothesis of the minimum work of Merchant is applied to materials with different yield points in traction and in simple compression on the assumption that these materials yield in accordance with the paraboloid yield-criterion. The experimental data obtained from cutting tests like those described in this paper may apparently be in good agreement with theoretical results. But closer examination reveals that the values of the shear angle φ depend largely on the cutting speed and on the feed p. r. All relationship between φ and (λ — γ) (difference between the friction angle on the rake face and the rake angle) must therefore take in account the influence of the above variables.
Drawing and extruding: Theoretical and approximate formulas
1969
The problem of drawing of wires and of strips has been treated in several studies; among these the studies of Sachs seem essential. However, the results deduced according to similar theories are not always in accordance with the experimental results: reduction of area or of thickness are in fact usually smaller than those resulting from the theory. This is in dependance of the fact that Sachs has adopted the Limiting Condition of Yielding by v. Mises, according to which the limit values of stress in traction and compression are equal. More recently other AA. (Alberti, Noto La Diega, Bugini), admitting the Limiting Condition of Yielding by A. (or of the Paraboloid of Revolution) of which we …
