La centralità della dimensione mediterranea nella costruzione dell'Europa medievale: circolazione e sistemi di relazioni

2018

The expansion of the post-carolingian core in the Mediterranean area (Spain, Southern Italy, Sicily and Crusader kingdoms) is an outstanding point of the "making of Europe" (according to R. Bartlett), along with the achievement of a commercial hegemony on the Mediterranean routes by Western merchants. Nevertheless, historical researches and syntesis did not consider enough the role played by institutional compounds that unified a large part of the Mediterranean area under the same power. The history of the so-called Crown of Aragon is an example of the extent to wich political unification initiated strong trends of circulation of nobles, royal officiers and merchants between the dominions o…

Conflicts, equilibria, hegemonies: the case for Catalan-Aragonese expansion as a starting point in late medieval Mediterranean studies based on a sur…

2019

The essay summarizes the main trends of the studies in Mediterranean medieval history to introduce the case of the "Crown of Aragon", whose expansion between 13th and 14th Centuries has been a turning point on the political and commercial equilibria of the area.

Carbonate precipitation in the alkaline lake Specchio di Venere (Pantelleria Island, Italy) and the possible role of microbial mats

2016

Abstract Alkaline lakes like the hydrothermally affected lake Specchio di Venere (Pantelleria Island, Central Mediterranean) are typical geological settings harbouring calcified microbial mats. The present work is focused on the discrimination between biotic and abiotic processes driving carbonate precipitation in this lake, using hydrochemical, mineralogical and isotopic data. Hydrochemical analyses demonstrate that the lake is nearly 10−fold supersaturated with regard to aragonite and seasonally reaches hydromagnesite supersaturation. Microscopic observations depict organosedimentary laminated structures consisting of microbial communities and aragonitic precipitates, which are rather dis…

Geochemistry and mineralogy of sediments and authigenic carbonates from the Malta Plateau, Strait of Sicily (Central Mediterranean): Relationships wi…

2010

Abstract A mud volcano field was recently discovered within the Malta Plateau in the Strait of Sicily (Central Mediterranean Sea). Box-core sediments and associated authigenic carbonates have been collected in water depths of 140–170 m from two distinctive sectors of the area, and analyzed for major, trace and rare earth elements, stable isotopes, and mineralogy. Relative homogeneity in the mineralogy and geochemistry of bulk sediments, and 210Pb activity distributions, argue against an active mud ejection activity. In the Malta Plateau western sector, the sediments show high concentrations of Fe, As, Sb, and Mo, exceeding the background values estimated for the Strait of Sicily. Active flu…

Eine Subfaziesfolge der Grünschieferfazies in den Mittleren Cévennen (Dép. Ardèche) mit Pyrophyllit aufweisenden Mineralparagenesen

1969

In the middle part of the Cevennes, situated at the south-eastern border of the Massif Central, there are outcrops of micaschists, gneisses and granites in which the increase of metamorphic grade was investigated along the river Beaume. This paper presents the results of the petrographic-geochemical analysis of the micaschists of the greenschist facies. Chemical analyses of the micaschist-samples examined petrographically show their nearly constant composition, a fact which e.g., is expressed by similar CaO/Na2O- and MgO/FeO-proportions. As the average values of the determined oxides approach the respective average values of analyses of graywackes recorded by Pettijohn (1957) the original s…

New mineral activity-composition relations for thermodynamic calculations in metapelitic systems

2014

New activity–composition (a–x) relations for minerals commonly occurring in metapelites are presented for use with the internally consistent thermodynamic dataset of Holland & Powell (2011, Journal of Metamorphic Geology, 29, 333–383). The a–x relations include a broader consideration of Fe2O3 in minerals, changes to the formalism of several phases and order–disorder in all ferromagnesian minerals where Fe–Mg mixing occurs on multiple sites. The a–x relations for chlorite, biotite, garnet, chloritoid, staurolite, cordierite, orthopyroxene, muscovite, paragonite and margarite have been substantially reparameterized using the approach outlined in the companion paper in this issue. For the fir…
