Designed peptides for biomineral polymorph recognition: a case study for calcium carbonate
2020
With their unique ability for substrate recognition and their sequence-specific self-assembly properties, peptides play an important role in controlling the mineralization of inorganic materials in natural systems and in controlling the assembly of soft materials into complex structures required for biological functions. Here we report the use of an engineered heptapeptide that can differentiate between the crystalline anhydrous polymorphs of calcium carbonate. This peptide contains the positively charged amino acid arginine as well as proline rather than the prototypical negatively charged aspartate or glutamate units. Its affinity to vaterite compared to aragonite was demonstrated by fluo…
Stati regionali e apparati burocratici nella Corona d'Aragona (sec. XIII-XV)
2005
The text, given as a charged paper at the Conreso de Historia de la Corona de Aragon, starts with a critical survey of traditional and recent historiography on the institutional structure of the Crown of Aragon. It's focused on the concepts of "pluralismo coordinado" (Lalinde Abadia) and of "composite monarchy" (Elliot, Koenigsberger), revealing strenghts and the weaknesses of the supernational state in the late Middle Ages. Each kingdom of the whole monarchy is then analysed in its institutional history and in its relationship with the central monarchy.
1990
The variability of the microstructurals characters and mineralogical composition of the oogonia of some charophytes extant and fossils is described. Two types of microstructures (W & V) are find. These are conservative into populations and are not able to change by the environmental factors. Moreover, these structures are quite constant in some of the phylogenetics groups studied. Consequently it is proposed its utilization in taxonomy. The apparition of original compounds in the Charophyta (vaterite. whewelite, aragonite, etc.) is important because it supports an old idea that considerates the Charophyta as an autonomous class between the Clorophyta and the Traqueophyta.<br><b…
Electron Spin Resonance and Thermoluminescence dating of shells and sediments from Sambaqui (shell mound) Santa Marta II, Brazil
2020
In Tupi, the word Sambaqui means “mound of shells”. These archaeological sites are cultural vestiges left by the prehistoric occupation of the Brazilian coast from five to six thousand years ago. Mollusks, fishes, and other marine edible foods were important for the survival of this population. The remains of foods, mainly shells, were heaped up, giving a mound of different proportions, which became part of the landscape of the Brazilian coastal plain. Due to the large number of Sambaquis in Brazil and considering that Sambaqui Santa Marta II, Laguna, SC, has not yet been dated, Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) measurements were performed in aragonite shells collected from different layers of …
Moroccan speleothem and tree ring records suggest a variable positive state of the North Atlantic Oscillation during the Medieval Warm Period
2013
We present a magnesium (Mg) and strontium (Sr) record from an aragonitic speleothem (Grotte de Piste, Morocco, 34°N; 04°W) providing a reconstruction of effective rainfall from 619 to 1962 AD. The corresponding drip site was monitored over 2 yr for drip water Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios. Results show evidence for prior aragonite precipitation, which can explain negative correlations between speleothem Mg and Sr concentrations. The data shown here have important climate implications concerning the evolution of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). A comparison of the stalagmite data from Grotte de Piste with an updated tree ring based drought reconstruction from Morocco and other NAO related pro…
LA-ICP-MS analyses on coral growth increments reveal heavy winter rain in the Eastern Mediterranean at 9 Ma
2009
Abstract Sediment particles incorporated into coral skeletons reflect variation in composition and amount of suspended material in ambient water during coral growth. They can be used to identify periods of enhanced storm frequency and associated freshwater discharge. Tortonian (Late Miocene) Porites corals from Crete (Aegean Sea, Eastern Mediterranean) show pronounced annual density bands in X-ray photographs. δ18O compositional variability reflects the annual banding equivalent with a ~ 7 °C annual sea surface temperature (SST) cycle over a seven-year period. Fine sediment particles are concentrated in layers with skeletal porosity parallel to growth increments. Variations in the chemical …
Nutrients attenuate the negative effect of ocean acidification on reef coral calcification in the Arabian Sea upwelling zone (Masirah Island, Oman)
2021
Tropical shallow-water reefs are the most diverse ecosystem in the ocean. Its persistence rests upon adequate calcification rates of the reef building biota, such as reef corals. Optimum calcification rates of reef corals occur in oligotrophic environments with high seawater saturation states of aragonite (Ωsw), which leads to increased vulnerability to anthropogenic ocean acidification and eutrophication. The calcification response of reef corals to this changing environment is largely unknown, however. Here, we present annually and sub-annually resolved records of calcification rates (n = 3) of the coral Porites from the nutrient rich and low Ωsw Arabian Sea upwe…
