AbstractThe taxonomic identification of mammalian fauna within fossil assemblages is a well-established component of paleoenvironmental reconstructions. However, many fragmentary specimens recovered from fossil sites are often disregarded as they can be difficult to identify with the precision required for taxonomic methods. The Greeks in the West: genetic signatures of the Hellenic colonisation in southern Italy and Sicily

Greek colonisation of South Italy and Sicily (Magna Graecia) was a defining event in European cultural history, although the demographic processes and genetic impacts involved have not been systematically investigated. Here, we combine high-resolution surveys of the variability at the uni-parentally inherited Y chromosome and mitochondrial DNA in selected samples of putative source and recipient populations with forward-in-time simulations of alternative demographic models to detect signatures of that impact. Petrographic and geochemical characterization of Archaic-Hellenistic tableware production at Solunto, Sicily

A selected assortment of Archaic-Hellenistic tableware samples from Solunto, a Phoenician-Punic site located 20 km east of Palermo (Sicily), has been subjected to thin-section petrography and chemical analysis (XRF). In this settlement several ceramic kilns remained operative over a long time period (7th to 3rd century B.C.). The main goal of this analytical study is to distinguish the ceramics manufactured locally from regional and off-island imports. Analytical results were matched to similar data concerning local natural clay sources and to coeval tableware productions from other sites in the same area. Emporion arcaica: génesis de un tipo de reverso

Ce travail traite des revers incus présents sur les émissions archaïques d’Emporion. Après une période utilisant plusieurs types de revers, l’atelier créa à la fin de sa phase A archaïque (vers 500 av. J.-C.) un très caractéristique revers-type : une croix perlée à l’intérieur d’un carré creux à quatre languettes. This paper deals with the archaic incuse reverses on coins minted by Emporion. After a period using several reverse types, at the end of the archaic phase A (ca. 500 BC) the mint created the most characteristic incuse square: a dotted cross inside an incuse square with four square knobs.

The aim of this paper is to illustrate the preliminary results of research (intrasite survey and excavation) carried out from 2013 to 2017 in the fortified settlement of Terravecchia di Cuti. The intrasite survey allowed to select the excavation area. Some walls, part of two distinct buildings, have been identified: the most interesting structure is a large room, perhaps a courtyard, around which there are at least three rooms. Remains of pithoi are in the rooms, and two on the courtyard floor. The contribution analyzes the structure, composition and contexts of the archaic age bronze hoards found in the colonial and anellenic sites of Sicily. The particular frequency of hoards in sacred areas is evident, where they are consecrated to the chthonic divinities due to their intrinsic value, linked to their metallic nature and their notion of weight.
