Applying the UDA‑ODA discrimination technique to a herpetological association: the case of the Middle Palaeolithic site of El Salt (Alcoi, Spain)
2022
AbstractEl Salt (Middle Palaeolithic; Alcoi, Spain) is a key site for understanding the disappearance of Neanderthals in the eastern Iberian Peninsula, a process that is observed along its stratigraphic sequence. To improve our understanding of the palaeoclimatic context in which this process took place, we applied the UDA-ODA discrimination technique to the fossil herpetological assemblages from Stratigraphic Units (SU) Xb (52.3 ± 4.6 ka) and V (45.2 ± 3.4/44.7 ± 3.4 ka). This method is based in the application of an ecological criterion, the maximum altitude of each species on each Iberian range, to discern and remove those areas that do not meet their ecological requirements (UDA) from t…
The Mediterranean Sea and the Gulf of Cadiz as a natural laboratory for paleotsunami research: Recent advancements
2021
International audience; After the 2004 Indian Ocean (IOT) and the 2011 Tohoku-oki tsunamis, new research in tsunami-related fields was strongly stimulated worldwide and also in the Mediterranean. This research growth yields substantial advancements in tsunami knowledge.Among these advancements is the “Paleotsunami” research that has marked particular progress on the reconstruction of the tsunami history of a region. As an integration of the historical documentation available in the Mediterranean and the Gulf of Cadiz areas, geological and geoarchaeological records provide the insights to define the occurrence, characteristics, and impact of tsunamis of the past. Here, we present the recent …
An approach to the high mountain settlements in the Pyrenees from Archaeology and Ethnography
2021
Sacralised spaces of Mithras in Roman Dacia
2021
AbstractThe Roman cult of Mithras is one of the most well documented cults in Roman Dacia, having almost 300 archaeological finds (epigraphic and figurative sources) produced in less than 170 years during the 2ndand 3rdcenturies AD. Although the rich materiality of the cult attracted European attention already in the 18thcentury, sacralised spaces of Mithras in Dacia – the mithraea of the province – were rarely analysed. This paper presents a systematic overview of the archaeologically and epigraphically attested sanctuaries. Based on the rich material of the cult it will present a new catalogue of sanctuaries of Mithras in Roman Dacia for the first time contextualising them in a new space …
Fuel For Lamps: Organic Residues Preserved in Iron Age Lamps Excavated at the Site of Sahab in Jordan
2017
Five Iron Age ceramic lamps from a tomb at the site of Sahab in the south-eastern part of central Jordan were analysed using gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The results of this study provide data on the type of fuel used in three of these lamps. The study proposes that animal fat, possibly of ruminant origin, was used in three Early Iron Age II lamps. The material used in the other two Iron Age I lamps could not be determined due to the absence of diagnostic biomarkers. The data obtained from the lamps can be put in conjunction with the archaeological evidence on the availability of domestic animals and, most probably, use of their products at the site of Sahab during the Ir…
Music, gender and rituals in the Ancient Mediterranean: revisiting the Punic evidence
2012
Abstract Music, playing instruments and performing rituals are bodily activities and as such they can be studied stressing their corporeal features. Music and sounds are usually essential elements in rites, and bodies play an essential role in bringing together music and rituals. We explore these issues focusing on Punic terracotta figurines playing musical instruments recovered from the island of Ibiza (fifth to third centuries bc).
Hermannstadt und die Stadtarchäologie
2019
Sibiu and the urban archaeology. During the last two-three decades the urban archaeology in Transylvania has pointed towards a visible progress. In the cities of Alba Iulia, Bistriţa, Brasov, Baia Mare, Dej, Cluj-Napoca, Lugoj, Orastie, Oradea, Sebes, Sfântu Gheorghe, Sibiu, Sighisoara, Timisoara, Târgu Mures and Turda archaeological investigations were carried out. In Sibiu, the first preemptive archaeological excavation took place in 1970 and focused upon the house and residence of the town's former mayor, Altemberger. Afterwards any archaeological campaign has been stopped for more than a decade. It was in 1983 that such endeavors have made a new start – once again in the respect to the …
Reminiscencias mediterráneas en cerámica ibérica. El ejemplo del Corral de Saus (Mogente, Valencia)
1996
