The role of Artificial intelligence in architectural design: conversation with designer and researchers

2020

The proliferation of data together with the increase of computing power in the last decade has triggered a new interest in artificial intelligence methods. Machine learning and in particular deep learning techniques, inspired by the topological structure of neurons network in brains, are omnipresent in the IT discourse, and generated new enthusiasms and fears in our society. These methods have already shown great effectiveness in fields far from architecture and have long been exploited in software that we use every day. Many computing libraries are available for anyone with some programming skills and allow them to "train" a neural network based on several types of data. The world of archi…

Re-Urban | De-frag. Progetti per trasformare la circonvallazione di Palermo

2014

This article presents a short survey of contemporary approaches to re-cycling, up-cycling and recovering urban freeways. Further, it introduces the assumptions and some initial descriptions of cases study of the Degree studio "In-FRA. Architettura e infrastruttura nella città contemporanea", that Z. Tesoriere conducts since 2013 at the University of Palermo. The studio focuses on how enhancing architectural conditions of urban freeways in contemporary urban realm, with particular attention to the circonvallazione of Palermo.

The shape of the liquid plain: sicilian salt flats

2019

This paper analyzes the salt flats as a place for the mixing of knowledge and experiences that originate and substantiate life: from the application of physical, chemical and biological principles to produce salt, to economic laws to regulate sales and trade, to aspects socio-anthropological aspects underlying the life of the communities that worked in production. A patrimony of material and immaterial overlaps, generated by the redesign of a segment of territory with physical and positional characteristics median between sea and land, and in which man strives to obtain fundamental resources for his livelihood. Given the complex moment of crisis and gradual abandonment that these particular…

SaaS architecture and pricing models

2014

In the new era of computing, SaaS software with different architectural characteristics might be priced in different ways. Even though both pricing and architectural characteristics are responsible for the success of the offering; the relationship between architectural and pricing characteristics has not been studied before. The present study fills this gap by employing a multi-case research. The findings accentuate that flexible and well-designed architecture enables different pricing models; however, poorly designed architecture limits also the pricing. Scalability and high level of modularity are the major enablers of a great variety of pricing models. Using public cloud services may lea…

2012

In the project of the Politeama’s Theater in Palermo, the Architect Almeyda summarizes, in an expressive and model balance, the technological component and geometrical/spatial shape, providing optimal solutions to a structural and functional problems. Thanks to its typological approach, thanks to its technological aspects and, specifically, thanks to its size and its style, the work offers us some interesting reflections about the technical choices carried out for the construction. The Author, basing on some original Almeyda’s drawings, deepens the geometric and compositional system of the roof. The daring and complex construction carried out in iron and glass, modern and progressive in for…

2020

In the year 1788, the parish of Los Santos Juanes in Valencia proposed to the City Council the erection of same classical-style portico in order to beautify its outer eastern façade, surrounding the head of the temple and relying on the Plaza del Mercado. This portico was never built, but there would be an impact of such an architectural purpose in subsequent reform plans of that outstanding urban location.

The thermal performances of historic masonry: In-situ measurements of thermal conductance on calcarenite stone walls in Palermo

2018

Abstract Rich literature explores materials and construction techniques of historic buildings, but limited information is available about the thermal and hygrometric features of their envelope. Nevertheless, accurate hygrothermal data are essential for identifying effective energy upgrade measures, which must be compatible with the conservation of the architectural heritage. In order to fill this gap, it is necessary to refer to local contexts, where the variety of historic buildings is limited and their material and construction features are comparable. This paper focuses on historic masonry walls and discusses the results of twenty in-situ measurements of thermal conductance, performed al…
