Nature trips and traditional methods for food procurement in relation to weight status
2013
Author's version of an article in the journal: Scandinavian Journal of Public Health. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/1403494812471446 Aims: The purpose of this study is to assess the relationships between trips in nature, gathering of wild plants, fishing and hunting and weight status. Methods: Data from a cross-sectional questionnaire survey of 996 parents of sixth- and seventh-graders from 38 randomly chosen schools in two Norwegian counties. All data are self-reported: Weight and height (participants were considered as overweight if BMI were 25 or higher), family trips in nature (dichotomized into ayenonce a week vs. less than once a week), gathering of w…
Objective vs Subjective Vault Measurement After Myopic Implantable Collamer Lens Implantation
2009
PURPOSE: To evaluate the relationship between subjective measurements of vault and objective values measured with Visante optical coherence tomography (OCT) in eyes receiving an implantable contact lens (ICL) for myopia correction. DESIGN: Observational cross-sectional study. METHODS: SETTING: Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute, Oviedo, Spain. PATIENTS: Four hundred and fifty-two eyes from 246 patients were elected to be implanted with a Visian ICL V4 (STAAR Surgical Inc, Monrovia, California, USA). OBSERVATION PROCEDURES: Subjective and objective measurements of vault after implantation of ICL. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Subjective vault classified in 5 levels assessed using an optical …
Linguistic Bias Modulates Interpretation of Speech via Neural Delta-Band Oscillations.
2017
Language comprehension requires that single words be grouped into syntactic phrases, as words in sentences are too many to memorize individually. In speech, acoustic and syntactic grouping patterns mostly align. However, when ambiguous sentences allow for alternative grouping patterns, comprehenders may form phrases that contradict speech prosody. While delta-band oscillations are known to track prosody, we hypothesized that linguistic grouping bias can modulate the interpretational impact of speech prosody in ambiguous situations, which should surface in delta-band oscillations when grouping patterns chosen by comprehenders differ from those indicated by prosody. In our auditory electroenc…
Distinct muscle-tendon interaction during running at different speeds and in different loading conditions.
2019
The interaction between the Achilles tendon and the triceps surae muscles seems to be modulated differently with various task configurations. Here we tested the hypothesis that the increased forces and ankle joint work during running under contrasting conditions (altered speed or load) would be met by different, time-dependent adjustments at the muscle-tendon level. Ultrasonography, electromyography, kinematics, and ground reaction force measurements were used to examine Achilles tendon, gastrocnemius, and soleus muscle mechanics in 16 runners in four different running conditions, consisting of a combination of two different speeds (preferred and +20% of preferred speed) and two loading co…
Two-rescuer CPR results in hyperventilation in the ventilating rescuer.
2005
The "Guidelines 2000 for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care--International Consensus on Science" recommend a tidal ventilation volume of 10 ml/kg body-weight without the use of supplemental oxygen during two-rescuer adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). This relates to a ventilation volume of about 6.4 l/min. Additionally, the first aid provider ventilating the victim will breathe for him/herself during the external chest compression period adding another 3.2 l/min of ventilation. Finally, a deep breath is recommended before each ventilation to increase the end-expiratory oxygen concentration of the air exhaled. To investigate the effects of these recommend…
Triceps surae muscle-tendon properties in older endurance- and sprint-trained athletes
2015
Previous studies have shown that aging is associated with alterations in muscle architecture and tendon properties (Morse CI, Thom JM, Birch KM, Narici MV. Acta Physiol Scand 183: 291–298, 2005; Narici MV, Maganaris CN, Reeves ND, Capodaglio P. J Appl Physiol 95: 2229–2234, 2003; Stenroth L, Peltonen J, Cronin NJ, Sipila S, Finni T. J Appl Physiol 113: 1537–1544, 2012). However, the possible influence of different types of regular exercise loading on muscle architecture and tendon properties in older adults is poorly understood. To address this, triceps surae muscle-tendon properties were examined in older male endurance (OE, n = 10, age = 74.0 ± 2.8 yr) and sprint runners (OS, n = 10, age…
Fatigue does not conjointly alter postural and cognitive performance when standing in a shooting position under dual-task conditions
2017
ABSTRACTThis study investigated the effects of fatigue on balance control and cognitive performance in a standing shooting position. Nineteen soldiers were asked to stand while holding a rifle (single task – ST). They also had to perform this postural task while simultaneously completing a cognitive task (dual task – DT). Both the ST and DT were performed in pre- and post-fatigue conditions. In pre-fatigue, participants achieved better balance control in the DT than in the ST, thus suggesting that the increased cognitive activity associated with the DT improves balance control by shifting the attentional focus away from a highly automatised activity. In post-fatigue, balance control was deg…
Wave similarity mapping shows the spatiotemporal distribution of fibrillatory wave complexity in the human right atrium during paroxysmal and chronic…
2005
Introduction: The complexity of waveforms during atrial fibrillation may reflect critical activation patterns for the arrhythmia perpetuation. In this study, we introduce a novel concept of map, based on the analysis of the wave morphology, which gives a direct evidence in the human right atrium on the spatiotemporal distribution of fibrillatory wave complexity in paroxysmal (PAF) and chronic (CAF) atrial fibrillation. Methods and Results: Electrograms were recorded from a 64-electrode catheter in the right atrium of 15 patients during PAF (n = 8) and CAF (n = 7). Wave similarity maps were constructed by calculating the degree of morphological similarity of activation waves (S) at each atri…
Neuromuscular Effects to 6 Weeks of Loaded Countermovement Jumping With Traditional and Daily Undulating Periodization.
2018
Ullrich, B, Pelzer, T, and Pfeiffer, M. Neuromuscular effects to 6 weeks of loaded countermovement jumping with traditional and daily undulating periodization. J Strength Cond Res 32(3): 660-674, 2018-Loaded vertical jumps are routinely used to enhance athlete's power production in the lower extremity and to optimize jumping and sprinting performance. This study compared traditional (TP) and daily undulating (DUP) periodization on muscle strength, jumping performance, electromyographic (EMG) muscle activity, and muscle architecture during preseason loaded jump training. Twenty-two athletes from different team sports (age: 24.3 ± 2.6 years, height: 175.9 ± 7.5 cm, body mass: 72.2 ± 8.4 kg, 1…
Portable PSG for sleep stage monitoring in sports: Assessment of SOMNOwatch plus EEG.
2019
Current sport-scientific studies mostly neglect the assessment of sleep architecture, although the distribution of different sleep stages is considered an essential component influencing an athlete's recovery and performance capabilities. A mobile, self-applied tool like the SOMNOwatch plus EEG might serve as an economical and time-friendly alternative to activity-based devices. However, self-application of SOMNOwatch plus EEG has not been validated against conventional polysomnography (PSG) yet. For evaluation purposes, 25 participants (15 female, 10 male;
